Work For a Bully?

January 28, 2009

Posted by Joe Lewis at January 28, 2009 09:15 AM

Ever work for a bully?  I have.  For one very bad one from 1992-1994, and it was the worst and one of the best experiences of my work life.  I was motivated to write this blog post by a blog I read daily and my personal experience.

Seth Godin's blog, and his recent post is at this link, clearly outlines a great approach to dealing with those bosses or people that will try to emotionally, psychologically or even physically bully and intimidate you.  The key is not to loose your composure and patience, while standing up for proper behavior.  Don't criticize the person, just comment and deal with the behavior.

Good leadership in business today can be hard to find, but not impossible.  Sometimes you run into bullies.  Other times you run into leaders wanting everyone to be happy, a state of nirvana.  And there are also those who replace doing what is right with politically correct fairness.

Whatever you do remember you do not have to put up with a bully, in fact, people putting up with the bully is why they exist in the first place,  It may cost you your job at some point, but you might just stop the bullying from happening to someone else and this makes it worthwhile.

I guess we have all had a bad experience. The important point is how we deal with it, not that it happened. I'm sorry Scott had that experience, but it could be worse... he could be the boss and be responsible for leading people. Ooops, now he is! Good luck Scott.
