New Facility and Business Boom Creates Storage Dilemma

Parsons, KS -- Petroleum Coke (pet coke) is a by-product of the oil refining process, consisting mainly of carbon and having low ash content. It is a less expensive fuel source than natural gas and oil and is an excellent choice for lime kilns.
Recently the growing costs of natural gas and coal have driven the paper industry to look for alternative sources of energy. Partners DTE and Falco Chemical, which process pet coke that is burned in lime kilns for the paper industry, faced a surge in demand for their products. To meet the demand, DTE built a new pulverizing facility in Vicksburg, Miss. and recognized an immediate need for tanks to store the finished product, an ultra fine powder. The storage silos had to be part of the pulverizing facility’s self-contained system, and be designed for loading into specially configured trucks, trailers or rail cars.
“We had several requirements – an aggressive timetable, storage with a dust-free environment, the need to load trucks quickly and efficiently. We also had to complete the project cost efficiently,” said Larry Lambiotte of Falco Chemical. “We’d always been pleased with the bolted and factory welded tanks we’d purchased from Columbian TecTank, and it was easy turning to them for a solution.”
Drawing on more than 105 years of experience, Columbian put its in-house engineering capabilities on the project and proposed an elevated tank with a drive-through design (for use by trucks and rail cars) and spiral steps. The design allowed the pulverized coke to be blown in for storage, and then provide easy access to loading trucks and rail cars when it came time to ship to customers.
Columbian uses the latest engineered modified epoxy powder coating that is factory applied and thermally cured, the leading technology available today. Within eight weeks, DTE received a Columbian tank with exceptional corrosion and abrasion resistant properties, one that will be a long-lasting economic tank.
“It is good engineering and a good quality product. The quick turnaround allowed us to manage our growing business without interruption,” says Lambiotte. “Columbian always delivers for us.”
