Kodak Improves Film Recycling Using Screen Presses

Florence, KY -- By installing Sweco Integrated Screen Presses (ISP) on existing Sweco round screeners, Kodak greatly improved processing efficiency and silver recovery in the recycling of film chips at their Rochester, New York facility.

Before enhancing the recovery process, Kodak was de-watering 900 gallons per minute of film chip slurry from film scrap using two Sweco 60" round vibratory screeners. The vibratory action of the screeners continuously conveyed the solids into containers. The material was then transported to a staging area where it was dried using a decanting process. Dried solids were later processed for silver recovery.

To increase drying efficiency, Kodak installed two Sweco Integrated Screen Presses (ISP) on the solids discharge of the two screeners. These augur de-watering devices remove free moisture from the chips and rinses them in a final cleaning step. The liquid discharged from the ISP’s is recycled back into Kodak’s processing system and the solids are put into containers for shipment to a recovery source.

The integration of the ISP’s into the recycling process produces a much cleaner, dryer film scrap that weighs considerably less than what had been output directly from the 60" screeners. This improvement reduces handling costs to Kodak’s silver recovery processor and the ISP’s are able to recover 20-30% more of the silver-bearing liquid. The liquid is now pumped back into Kodak’s processing system, eliminating the time and expense of sending the liquid for further reclamation.
