The “Smart” Choice for Lithium Metal Powder Handling

Sewell, NJ -- Avestor in Canada, the world leaders in the production of Lithium Metal Polymer (LMP) batteries have recently launched a revolutionary type of solid-state battery which is both small (50% smaller than alternatives) and durable (they have a lifetime of over 10 years and are completely maintenance free). Market reaction to the batteries is so powerful that Avestor has built a completely new production facility in Canada to cope.

Avestor has to ensure efficient and safe supply of their powdered raw materials from around the world. The powders involved are valuable and moisture sensitive, therefore the method of packaging and transportation are critical factors. The powders are also very poor flowing and, after weeks or months in transit to the factory, they are sure to be compacted and difficult to discharge to the process.

Avestor decided that small and durable was once again the answer – they selected the Matcon “Smart Drum” System for international transport and in-plant solids handling. Smart Drums are filled with powdered raw materials at the many international supplier locations and sealed with an over-pressure of nitrogen to keep the product safe from moisture. They are then shipped to Avestor.

The Smart Drums incorporate the revolutionary Matcon Cone Valve System, which allows them to be off-loaded from incoming transportation, taken inside the plant by forklift, coupled directly to the production process when required, and discharged in a fully controllable way, without manual intervention or exposure to operators or environment. Now that’s Smart!!

With a capacity of only 300 liters each, the Smart Drums are small, which reduces the risk in transport and eases internal handling in the production environment. The Smart Drums are also durable and every one is fully certified as suitable for international transportation purposes.
