Cheshire, UK -- Segregation results from different fractions of a bulk material taking diverging routes when in motion. It is virtually inevitable to occur when handling of free flowing materials composed of particles that differ in some physical properties, such as size, shape or density because bulk flow results from the influence of multiple forces on each particle and their response to such forces are influenced by their individual physical nature.
The significance and consequences of this phenomenon varies widely but, in sensitive situations, can seriously impinge on plant performance and/or quality or fitness for purpose of the product. Whilst there are many technical publications that examine different aspects of this behaviour, the user of bulk materials has been handicapped until now by the lack of a comprehensive review of the subject.
The interaction of many factors inhibits a simple theoretical structure and a comprehensive integration of the various forces, mechanisms, processes and associated features is needed to secure a fundamental grasp of the subject. The British Materials Handling Board commissioned the publication of a ‘User Guide to Segregation’ to meet this requirement. The book sets out in a simple format the basic features of the subject and provides a sound basis for understanding the various aspects of bulk behaviour that are affected and provides guidance for dealing with the situation.
The importance and influence of segregation on the product, process, production, personnel, plant and health and safety are described, together with the various forces, mechanisms, processes, flow regimes and operations in which segregation occurs. Variable affecting the scale and intensity of segregation are also discussed. This structured approach allows the user to consider what particular aspect of his application has a significant bearing on problems that may arise.
Probably the most useful section of the book to the user is the sections describing various means of controlling, mitigating and rectifying segregation. Explaining the principles behind these methods allows users to develop designs and techniques that may easily be applied and tailored to suit their specific duty. An additional source of valuable information is contained within the many references cited in the publication.
