GEORGETOWN, ME -- MECO custom-engineered shaft seals for rotating dry bulk process equipment will be exhibited in booth number 2531 at the International Powder and Bulk Solids Expo at PTXi on May 6-8, 2008. Sponsored by Canon Communications, the conference and expo will take place in the Donald E. Stephens Convention Center in Rosemont, Illinois.
Processors seeking effective alternatives to packed gland type seals will find that new developments in MECO's sealing technology have allowed the company to offer seals for clean-in-place (CIP) systems, essential for many of today's food and pharmaceutical applications. Through improved rotor technology, MECO engineers have also succeeded in pushing the shaft speed envelope to 1000 surface feet per minute on dry-running shafts. MECO is also offering seals certified for European ATEX service.
MECO seals are used in the food, chemical, pharmaceutical, plastics and minerals processing industries. MECO offers its custom shaft seals for slower-turning bulk processing equipment, including mixers, blenders, reactors, conveyors, dryers, bucket elevators, grinders, crushers and agitators. A wide range of shaft diameters can be retrofitted on vertical-, inclined- or horizontal- shaft equipment.
Recognizing that no standard seals will work properly in every application, MECO engineers specify the optimal, patented seal design and construction materials for each seal according to precise shaft diameter, speed, clearance, process chemistry, temperature, pressure, etc. Seal materials are chosen from a variety of specialty and hardened alloys, bearing-grade plastics and specialty elastomers. FDA materials are available.
Factors such as thermal growth of the shaft and process pressure variations are calculated into the designs. Seals use different gas barrier fluids, at very low flow rates (under 1/2 cubic feet per minute). Custom engineering and attention to detail make MECO seals more successful than conventional types of seals or packings.
Originally developed for screw conveyors, MECO seals solve problems caused by shaft run-out or misalignment by accommodating 1/4” diametric run-out or more. MECO seals are frequently used to retrofit equipment where a packing gland has failed repeatedly due to shaft run-out.
MECO seals are available fully-split so that installation and rebuilding are quick and easy. In sanitary applications, seals can be removed for daily cleaning where required. MECO seals are ideal for applications requiring vacuum containment, often increasing machine efficiency dramatically.
About Woodex Bearing Company
Woodex has been the exclusive manufacturer and marketing agent for MECO custom-engineered shaft seals since 1984. MECO engineers continually work to “push the envelope” of sealing technology and provide telephone consultation and trouble-shooting for sealing problems of all sorts. Woodex emphasizes top-quality design and manufacturing and first-rate customer service. An extensive distributor network provides hands-on support with measuring, installation and servicing of MECO seals.
All manufacturing processes for Woodex bearings and MECO shaft seals are contained in the Georgetown facility. A recently expanded plant blends manually-operated, conventional machine tools with modern, numerically-controlled equipment in a 36,000 square foot manufacturing facility. Woodex also manufactures fully-split, oil-impregnated wood bearings.
