Maximizing Your Auger Filler

Hingham, MA -- With auger fillers, the most common unproductive time is when the operator needs to stop packaging to fill the surge hopper to feed the auger.  Typically it is a manual process with the operator climbing up a small scaffold or step ladder and pouring or scooping in the material.  This is not only an unproductive non-value-added step in the process, but, can also be a safety issue due to the potential of injury from lifting the material and breathing in dust during the manual transfer.  More often than not there is a substantial amount of wasted product that fails to get into the surge hopper during the manual transfer.

The PIAB C-Series vacuum conveyor will improve your packaging process by maximizing the output of an operator.  The operator spends more time filling packages rather than supplying the auger filler with material.  Less material is wasted due to spillage or operator error during loading of the auger filler. The C-Series vacuum conveyor is a safer, more efficient means to load auger fillers and eliminates the need for ladders and scaffolds. Packaging runs at peak efficiency.

A typical set up is a surge hopper mounted on the auger filler with a PIAB feeding the surge hopper (see photo).  Using a PIAB with a tote or a drum arrangement, simple control logic can include high / low level indicators insuring the auger filler is continuously operating.  The PIAB conveyor system has a smaller footprint than other mechanical loading methods, thereby saving valuable production space.

When a PIAB C-Series vacuum conveyor is set up correctly, segregation can be less then when using a manual method of keeping the auger filler supplied with material due to dense phase conveying and mass flow discharge.   PIAB conveyors maintain product integrity and prevent impact agglomerations.

The PIAB vacuum conveyor is a closed system and is virtually dust free.  PIAB’s are cleaner.  The PIAB filtration system with filter shock to prevent caking offers filtration capabilities to 0.5 micron.  Due to the design and operational characteristics of a PIAB vacuum conveyor system, if the transfer line is compromised, material will be contained within the PIAB and not onto the production area floor.

The PIAB C- Series vacuum conveyor is energy efficient.  The power source for the vacuum pump is compressed air. Compressed air is shut off/on between cycles thereby using energy intermittently unlike mechanical pumps or motors that utilize energy continuously.  There is no oil to dispose of from the motor.   PIAB conveyors are intrinsically safe when properly grounded.

The C-Series vacuum conveyor has a modular design for future expansion. Quick release clamps makes cleaning of the unit between campaigns quick and easy.  No tools are required for disassemble and reassemble. The conveyor’s pneumatic circuitry is colored coated for reassemble.  Other accessories for improved efficiency include feed adaptor mounts for totes and IBC as well as feed wands for drums.  For material that has difficult flow characteristics, PIAB offers fluidization capabilities to prevent bridging and rat holing.

PIAB vacuum conveyors working in conjunction with auger fillers handle toner, fertilizer, pesticide, ceramic, pigment, etc.  Due to the 316L sanitary design of the PIAB conveyor it is perfect for food, pharmaceutical and holistic/nutraceutical applications.  PIAB C-Series vacuum conveyors are USDA & 3-A certified and accepted.

Whether you currently have auger fillers in your operation or are in the process of a new purchase, PIAB will work with you to create the best system for your application. PIAB has a conveyor laboratory for product testing and will offer a process guarantee if the test is successful in our lab.  PIAB has a 5 year warranty.
