Dallas, TX -- A food grade salt mine was battling corrosion to machines, metal surfaces and their building due to the lack of salt containment from the belt conveyors used in the facility. Salt sticks to the belt and is carried under the conveyor where catch pans are needed to catch the spillage. This piled up quickly. Also, salt would leak out of the various open joints and transfer points, which adds to the corrosion and maintenance time.
Belt conveyors have many moving parts that need maintenance and repair. These parts are often covered to minimize the effects of spillage, but continuous removal for maintenance can be difficult to re-seal them. This is costly down time if emergency maintenance arises.
The Slipstick horizontal motion conveyor was chosen when the plant decided to change the process. The Slipstick does not have any moving parts and the tray is seamless, eliminating the salt from seeping through. The horizontal motion conveyor’s slow advance and quick return motion is gentler than any other conveyor system. Utilizing a single drive and support system, multiple lanes were also installed, essentially making one conveyor serve the functions of 2, 3, or 4. This helps enable efficient packaging for different sizes and types.
In this particular application because of the food grade product, 316 stainless steel was used with multiple discharge areas. By installing the Slipstick horizontal motion conveyor, this facility was able to minimize maintenance and repairs, and essentially downtime.
A small, sanitary stainless steel rotary screen or trommel, designed by the Screening Strategies Division of Triple/ S Dynamics, was also installed along with the Slipsticks. This was used to separate the larger salt pieces from the smaller fines.
