Newton, NC -- Carolina Pelleting & Extrusion, Inc. supplies custom pelleting services for converting powders into free-flowing, non-dusty pellets. This process includes powder handling, intensive blending/mixing, pellet formation, cooling, sieving and packaging. Because some products are temperature sensitive and need to maintain a low heat history, pellet forming is considered the most critical operation in the process and selecting the right equipment was very important.
In addition to product characteristics, factors for selecting pellet forming equipment included:
• Easy-to-clean machine, since eliminating cross-contamination between products is a high priority.
• Process flexibility, since the company intended to process a wide variety of chemicals including antioxidants, stabilizers, flame retardants, inorganic fillers, rubber chemicals and some resins.
• Adjustable compression, the pelleting device should have the capability to make either soft or hard pellets depending on the application.
Several types of devices were considered, including pellet mills, extruders, roll compactors, and agglomeration systems. Based on previous work and experience with LCI Corporation, the Kahl Pellet Press was identified as a leading option.

In order to gain maximum flexibility, Carolina Pelleting installed a unit with design features unique to the Kahl Pellet Press: a cooling chamber around the support/drive bearings; geared rollers for positive drive when processing slippery products; air blowing ports under the die; two-speed operation and a hydraulic system for changing the compression gap on-line. Dies were supplied with various compression ratios so that individual products could be customized for end use. And, in order to fit into the continuously changing environment of a custom manufacturer’s schedule, the Pellet Press, outlet box, and feeder were mounted into a moveable frame including controls and surge hopper.
Douglas Hicks, president of Carolina Pelleting & Extrusion, Inc. commented: “We could not process such a wide variety of products if we had not installed the Kahl Pellet Press. Especially helpful has been the broad processing knowledge and background from LCI”.
The Kahl Pellet Press offers advantages when handling very fluffy and clumpy materials due to an overhead feeding arrangement — material simply falls into the unit, eliminating the need for side feed screws. Also, with the Pellet Press, operators are able to visually monitor the process to avoid overfeeding.
To date, Carolina Pelleting is pleased with performance and will continue to use the Kahl Pellet Press as their business continues to expand.
