Uzwil,Switzerland -- The world’s tallest grain elevator (silo) was inaugurated on April 15, 2005 at the German company Carl Kunkele zur Schapfenmuhle in Ulm. The grain storage facility has a height of 115 meters and was built within 12 months. Buhler as a longtime partner was awarded the supply of the mechanical equipment as well as of the process control system.

The project comprised the design, engineering, supply, installation supervision, and start-up of the grain elevator plus a hulling system for oats and dinkel (spelt wheat) with a capacity of 120 metric tons a day. Buhler was in charge of supplying the mechanical equipment and for the process control system. The WinCoS software applied includes - in addition to the basic elements - the 'WinTrace' module for product retracing and the 'WinMessenger' fault reporting system.

It is integrated in the customer’s master planning system. The mechanical equipment of the hulling system also includes the new PRIMUS high-capacity grain cleaner, which separates all contamination from the grain at a high throughput capacity and in a single pass.

With its 115 meters height the silo is the highest of the world and after the city’s cathedral the second highest building of Ulm. It has a capacity of 8,000 tons of grain.

Buhler is a global Technology Group and a system partner in the supply of plant and equipment and process know-how in the fields of Food Processing, Chemical Process Engineering, and Die Casting, with a payroll of about 6100 worldwide.
