NJ Quarry Finds the "Weigh To Do It"

The Bemp belt scales are installed on conveyors throughout the plant.
Mt. Hope, NJ -- When Tilcon's quarry operators wanted a better way of tracking and accurately totalizing the amount of product they produce, they began to look for a solution. Previously, they had an outside firm come in and physically measure stock piles.

This method left them with inaccurate inventory accounts, which they felt put them at a disadvantage when they sold product. They may have been providing more product to customers than was actually purchased, but they did not have a truly measurable way of knowing.

The company’s operators also wanted to optimize their processing capabilities through the use of weighing technology. They can do that now because the plant’s screens, crushers, conveyors, and stackers use Schenck Weighing Systems products.

One Schenck product the plant uses is the Bemp Modular, single-idler belt scale, which produces continuous flow rates up to 15,000 tph. The scale can be mounted on conveyors with CEMA idlers anywhere from 18in. to 60in. wide using only four bolts.

Tilcon New York's Mt. Hope, N.J. plant uses Schenck's Bemp modular, single-idler belt scale, which weighs continuous flow rates up to 15,000 tph.
The modularity of the scales allows the plant personnel to install them on a variety of conveyors of different widths. It also allows them to take off one conveyor and install it easily on another.

“This gives Tilcon a means of determining how each piece of equipment is operating and the opportunity to adjust the output of a particular piece of equipment to optimize the entire process,” says Jiries Saba, Tilcon electrical engineer.

NTEP-Approved

Each belt scale comes with two, NTEP approved, single-point load cells and the Intecont MS integrator. (NTEP is the National Type Evaluation Program, which exists to verify the functionality and accuracy of load cells and similar products). Accuracies of + 1 percent of totalized weight are possible.

The unit operates by having the material weight measured using the Bemp belt scale. That and the belt speed are multiplied by the Intecont MS integrator to produce a flow rate value. Flow rate is then integrated by the Intecont MS integrator to produce a totalized weight value.

Intecont MS controller provides totalized production values coming from the Bemp belt scale.
Tilcon also utilizes a total of 18 Ethernet cards provided by Schenck as part of the Intecont Plus Controller to give visual graphics of production levels within the plant. Schenck engineers custom programmed each Ethernet card to store Web pages, which enables Tilcon management to determine feed rates and totalized amounts at any given time.

Each piece of equipment has its own Web page that shows when it is operating. It is identified through a specific color. A green Web page screen indicates that a particular piece of equipment is running and a red screen indicates that the equipment is not operating.

Some additional advantages to the system are:
· The easy-to-read and retrieve format
· No specialized field bus requirements
· Tilcon can do additional programming, further customizating to meet their needs

Things that go Bemp

Tilcon has had Schenck Bemp scales installed at Mt. Hope for more than two years. A total of 18 Bemp belt scales along with Intecont MS integrators are currently in use.

The Bemp belt scales are installed on conveyors located throughout the plant leading to stackers, crushers, and feeders. The scales totalize the amount of stone, sand, and recrush that goes through the plant. Currently, of the 18 scales installed in the plant, 12 are in the quarry and six are in the wash plant. Additionally, the Ethernet capabilities provided through the Intecont MS integrator, allows management personnel to view production levels throughout the plant at anytime.

The efficiencies gained by now having continuous production data has helped Tilcon avoid bottlenecks and increase overall production. Tilcon has been very impressed with the service they have received from the Schenck Weighing Systems local representative, Entek Associates of Rockaway, N.J.

“We can call Entek at anytime and know that we will get assistance with installation, troubleshooting, and product training,” says Saba. “That is not something we could get from other suppliers.”
