Vibratory Level Sensor Eliminates Bin Overflow

  .
PROBLEM: A manufacturer of various food stuffs, such as uncooked popcorn, microwave popcorn and cereal, had problems with overfilling their bins due to failures of motors in rotary paddle bin level indicators.

Rotary paddle units use an electric motor to drive the rotation of a “paddle”. The rotation is impeded by the presence of material and an electric switch is activated. Motor failures occur periodically and can result in spills and overfilling of bins when they are used as a high level indicator and the motor failure is undetected.

The manufacturer began its business in the late 1800’s and has evolved as a primary supplier of foodstuffs marketed under private branding arrangements as of the mid 1980’s. The manufacturing facility for cereal and popcorn products with the problems mentioned is located in Missouri. As a private labeler of these foods cost and quality are important areas of concern. They needed a solution to their problem.

SOLUTION: The manufacturer of these foodstuffs has been successfully using the Model PZP vibratory level sensor from Monitor Technologies LLC to replace the aging rotary paddle bin indicators over the past few years. They have several small hoppers, which are all constructed of stainless steel, and they use the Model PZP for high and low level detection. The hoppers are actually used as surge tanks ahead of their packaging machinery.

The Model PZP vibratory probe was selected because many of the products processed by the manufacturer are very low in bulk density. While the manufacturer had tried “tuning fork” type vibratory probes but in some cases material would get packed inside the mounting coupling and the tines of the tuning fork element, thus causing a problem with false detection. The Model PZP level sensor uses a single probe. In addition, the diamond shape of advantage in shedding powders from the probe. All in all the Model PZP has been a very successful solution for this global food manufacturer.
