Pulse Combustion Production-Scale Dryer for Customer Use
------------------------------------------------------------
Pulse Combustion Systems (PCS) has announced the commissioning
of its production-scale spray dryer in its lab in Payson,
Arizona. PCS President Jim Rehkopf stated, "Customers are
very pleased with the powders made in our demonstration dryer.
Now we can show them exactly how the drying process will
scale-up by producing their powder in our new production dryer."
The new pulse combustion spray dryer is 32 feet tall and
operates at a heat release of one million BTU/hour. The all
stainless steel dryer evaporates water at a rate of up to 500
lbs per hour. The unique clamshell design allows the dryer to
be completely opened for easy cleaning between demonstrations.
The dryer features a state-of-the art control system and three
remote monitoring cameras, which allow customers to view all
stages of their powder production.
Pulse combustion spray drying offers important advantages over
conventional spray drying technologies. Pulse drying uses
gas dynamic atomization, which instantly atomizes and dries
the feed material without mechanical shear, resulting in
higher-quality powders. Different configurations are available
to optimize powder characteristics such as particle size,
flowability, texture and flavor. Pulse combustion is ideally
suited for drying abrasive or heat/shear sensitive materials.
Users can also realize dramatically lower maintenance and
utility costs.
"Our PCS Spray Dryer has been successfully tested with all
kinds of food and dairy products, nutraceuticals, minerals
and chemicals. The commissioning of our production dryer
will assist our customers by taking the guesswork out of
determining scale-up capabilities," explains Ken Price, VP,
Sales and Marketing.
Pulse Combustion System's test lab is located in Payson,
Arizona, an easy ninety-minute drive from the Phoenix airport.
Product tests may be scheduled by contacting PCS toll free at
(877) 854-1062, or by visiting the "Schedule a Test" page of
http://www.pulsedry.com/.

Solving the Problem of Metal Contamination
------------------------------------------------------------
Metal contamination is a prevalent problem in many process
industries because it damages expensive machinery, is a health
and safety hazard, impairs product purity and can dramatically
lower the market value of the end product.
Eriez Magnetics Europe offers the most diverse and advanced
range of metal detectors and magnetic separators for both wet
and dry applications to detect, separate and remove metal
contamination, whether ferrous or non-ferrous, fine iron or
coarse tramp iron. Automatic sampling systems are also part
of the product portfolio for final quality inspection and
sample analysis.
The importance of raw material purification and product
quality improvement is ever increasing and recent developments
at Eriez are opening up new possibilities for material
enhancement. The High Intensity Magnetic Filter, for instance,
generates very high magnetic fields up to 1 Tesla (10,000 gauss)
to remove fine and weakly magnetic particles from liquids,
such as chocolate, ceramics, mineral slurries and chemicals.
It is a self-cleaning system, thus ensuring maximisation of
separation.
Another major new development has been the Eriez
Superconducting POWERFLUX unit. The POWERFLUX has been
developed in response to customers’ requirements for a
simple, super high intensity Magnetic Separator up to 5
Tesla (50,000 gauss) with lower investment and lower running
costs than those of conventional units.
For dry magnetic separation the highest intensity separation
system from Eriez is the Rare Earth Roll Separator to process
small and high quantities of product, such as feldspar and
sand. With Rare Earth Rolls available in diameters of 76mm,
100mm and 300mm and in a choice of widths, Eriez claims to
have the widest range of Rare Earth Roll Separators in the
world.
Another technologically advanced product is the Dynamic Drum
Separator for removal of fine iron from powders, including
silicon carbide, quartz, glass, granites, alumina, cements,
ceramics, industrial minerals, foodstuffs and chemicals.
The separation achieved surpasses six-fold that of a
two-pass Rare Earth magnetic tube and is three-and-a-half
times better than a two-pass RE magnetic drum.
The Pulseparator is a new launch this year (as seen at Pakex
2001). This is a metal separator which pneumatically ejects
ferrous and non-ferrous contamination from granular products
in free fall down to 1mm in size with minimal wastage of
good product. It handles both wet materials and those with
a mineral content which other low cost equipment cannot
process without false tripping.
The company has also added enhanced units to its METALARM
6000 Metal Detector Range to detect stainless steel. The
METALARM 6500 is installed on inclined conveyors typically
used to feed granulators.
Other options in the metal detection range include a
comprehensive choice of underbelt and bridge type search
coils particularly suited to quarrying, mining, wood and
recycling applications, as well as a portable metal detector,
stainless steel conveyor metal detectors predominantly
used in the food industry and a single-sider, multi-zone
metal detector which incorporates a new electronics board
for enhanced sensitivity, improved noise reduction and
better serviceability.
Eriez Magnetics Europe is ISO 9001 approved and has a fully
equipped, state-of-the-art laboratory testing facility at
its South Wales site to ensure that the most optimal process
solution is provided for a particular application or
process problem.

Mr. Lawrence needs help with hydrated lime handling:
What are the best ways to handle hydrated lime for unloading
& loading trucks and railcars? Our plants that currently
produce hydrated lime have very dusty operations and we would
like to look at alternatives.
We have kicked around the idea of PD Trucks & Railcars...does
anyone have any practical experience with this equipment?
Specifically with hydrated lime?

Mr. Glazer needs help with powder packaging:
My company is a graphic design firm that handles all types of
B2B marketing and packaging design needs. We are currently
working on a packaging design project that involves a powder
drink supplement. In order to make a statement, my thought
is to package the powder in straws (like the powder suger
candy we ate as kids in paper straws), as opposed to the
typical flat foil packette. Each powder stick would be 30
grams.
To whom can I turn to investigate this concept further. I
started by researching the candy industry for that type of
packaging and wound up here. Can you provide some direction
and advice for me?
Thanks in advance,
