Conveyor Industry Reaches Record Level in 1999
------------------------------------------------------------
NAPLES, FLORIDA — The Conveyor Equipment Manufacturers
Association (CEMA) reports that, for the fifth consecutive year,
record-setting growth occurred in booked and billed sales for
the industry.
Booked sales totaled $6.4 billion for 1999, and shipments
totaling $5.9 billion established a new industry record. Booked
sales eclipsed the prior year record of $5.4 billion according
to James F. Krempa, CEMA President, who announced the results
at the Association’s annual meeting in Naples, Florida in
March.
Booked sales for unit handling conveyors increased by 26%, and
shipments increased by 5%. Bookings and shipments for bulk
handling conveyors decreased by 7% and 5%, respectively,
from 1998 levels. The pace of booked orders and shipments
for the industry increased 19% and 7%, respectively, compared
with 1998.
This was led by an increase in three of the seven unit
handling conveyor categories — unit handling (light to medium),
trolley (heavy-duty conveyors), and tow conveyors. One of
the four bulk handling conveyor categories posted an increase
in booked orders (Engineered Bulk Handling Equipment), and
one category in shipments (Bulk Belt Conveyor Components).
Founded in 1933, CEMA is the national trade association of
leading U. S. conveyor equipment manufacturers. CEMA tracks
seven classes of unit handling equipment and four classes of
bulk handling equipment.
CEMA also makes available to both member and non-member
companies, safety labels for all types of conveyor equipment
as well as useful technical information and manuals. For
further information on CEMA or its member companies, or to
order safety labels or technical information,

STI Completes Acquisition of Lundahl Instruments, Inc.
------------------------------------------------------------
FREMONT, CA - April 1, 1999 - Scientific Technologies Inc.
("STI", NASDAQ:STIZ) today announced that it has completed
its acquisition of Lundahl Instruments, Inc., a privately-held
company located in Logan, Utah ("Lundahl Instruments").
Lundahl Instruments designs and manufactures non-contact
ultrasonic sensors and controllers. The sensors and controllers
are used primarily in the automation of industrial processes
for applications involving level and flow control, environmental
monitoring, automated vehicle collision avoidance and material
positioning. The acquisition will be accounted for under the
purchase method of accounting. Other terms of the transaction
were not disclosed.
In commenting on the acquisition, Joseph J. Lazzara, President
and Chief Executive Officer of STI stated, "We expect this
acquisition to expand our existing portfolio of sensor products.
In particular, Lundahl Instruments' ultrasonic technology is
an especially good fit for our level and flow business unit.
The unique combination of high performance and low cost
characteristics make this technology a preferred technique for
solving level, flow and material positioning applications in
industrial automation."
Lundahl Instruments was founded in 1987 by Cordell Lundahl and
was operated as a subsidiary of the Ezra C. Lundahl, Inc. until
it was acquired by Mark Lundahl in 1995. STI plans to retain
the Lundahl Instruments' engineering, manufacturing and sales
operations in Logan, Utah following the closing of the
acquisition. As a wholly owned subsidiary of STI, it is
anticipated that Lundahl Instruments will operate as a business
unit organized to address market opportunities for level and
flow monitors and controls.
Scientific Technologies Inc. is a leading global supplier
of machine safeguarding products such as safety light curtains,
safety interlocks, safety relays and safety mats. STI also

GEI International Wins Technological Development Award
------------------------------------------------------------
GEI International and Heineken are proud to announce that they
have won the Food Processing Magazine, ‘Technological Development
of the Year’ award. Heineken sponsored the development of an
advanced FBI (Filled Bottle Inspection) system. The development
team responded to the need to protect valuable beverage brands
from potentially costly and disastrous product recalls.
The patented FBI system detects foreign bodies such as 1mm
cubed glass particles at on-line speeds of up to 1000 bottles/min.
The system uses an elegant – yet robust – method of bottle
spinning and advanced image analysis to ensure high reliability
and low false rejection rates. The first system is currently
installed and being commissioned at the Heineken site in
Zoeterwoude.
GEI International will market the system to the worldwide
beverage industry.

Seminar on Bulk Solids Handling & Processing in India
------------------------------------------------------------
Number of processing units handle bulk solids including powdery
or granular materials. Their storage, handling, transportation
and processing pose tricky problems like uneven flow out of
storage , choking in the conveying system , spillage and dust
nuisances and sometimes explosions or fires. The processing
in a continuous and automated operating plant is disturbed due
to the above reasons. Power plant, mineral processing units,
cement plants, complex fertilizers plant, pharma units and
many others face these problems and are charged for not meeting
their full capacity production expectations or the pollution
control requirement.
The solution to all these lies in proper understanding of the
bulk. Solids characteristics & physical properties. The role
of proper scientific sizing , their design and selection of
such material handling & processing equipment are very important.
This seminar aims at dealing various aspects of the technology,
including the dissemination of plant experiences & problems.
New development in the material handling equipment and
related products shall also be covered. Design engineers,
manufacturers of such equipment & user industries may benefit
by attending this seminar.. Presentation of technical papers
shall be by the experts in the field.

Mr. Paternoster wants information on pneumatic calculations:
I am a student working on a group project for a plant layout
course that has a materials handling focus. Our project is to
convey 1 ton of saw dust per hour 100 ft. into a waste container.
80 ft. in the horizontal direction and 20 ft. in the vertical
direction. The group is to size a belt and pneumatic conveyance
system. I am working on the pneumatic system and would like
help find the equations for sizing a blower for 4"- 6" piping
that would accomplish this. The saw dust would be coming out
of some type hopper into the system in front of the blower so
that the material would not go through the blower. Can anyone
assist? Please email.
