U.S. Demand for Packaging Machinery Expected to Level
------------------------------------------------------------

2001 U.S. Packaging Machinery Purchasing Plans Study Released

ARLINGTON, Va., April 27 /PRNewswire/ -- The Packaging Machinery
Manufacturers Institute recently released the findings of its
fourth annual U.S. Packaging Machinery Purchasing Plans Study.
Spending for packaging machinery by U.S. domestic companies is
expected to level during calendar year 2001 to approximately
US$4.9 billion in sales (excluding parts, which generally
represent 20% of packaging machinery sales.)

"Year after year, consumer and industrial packaging companies
continue to seek efficient, productive packaging machinery from
machinery manufacturers and 2001 is no exception. The packaging
machinery industry has experienced growth in the area of 3% each
year for the past few years," commented Charles D. Yuska,
president of PMMI. "This year, three of the nine categories we
researched -- foods, pharmaceuticals and paper/non-durables --
which typically account for nearly 60% of annual packaging
machinery sales, will increase their rates of spending."

Packaging machinery expenditures by the foods segment are
predicted to rise by +1-3%; while the pharmaceutical industry
segment will increase by +5-7% and the paper/non-durable products
industry by +4-6%. Of the remaining segments, five segments,
including beverages (-1-4%), chemical products (-1-12%),
consumer durables (-1-13%), personal care products (-1-2%) and
printing/converting (-1-13%), are predicted to reduce spending.
The hardware/industrial/automotive segment has budgeted about
the same as last year.

Respondents indicated that the primary factors driving demand
this year include "the need to replace existing machinery with
current models in order to gain efficiency, productivity" (32%).
Also mentioned was "the need to expand production capacity" (30%).

For the 2001 study, cyclical economic factors are exerting
considerable more negative weight on the outlook for packaging
machinery purchasing than in year's past. The most compelling
reasons to expect a leveling off in sales for 2001 include:

Solid evidence of much slower economic growth is affecting
capital expenditure budget decisions throughout most sectors of
the packaging machinery market.

The most recent cycle of capital spending is now in its later
phase. As a result of heavy spending for machinery over the
past few years, the market's level of packaging capacity has
nearly reached a point of saturation in relation to current
production requirements.

The primary reasons survey respondents provided as to why they
were expecting to reduce packaging machinery spending for 2001
include "existing machinery adequate" (43%), "spent heavily for
machinery in 2000" (30%) and "lower corporate sales, profits and
budget cuts" (23%).

contacting PMMI at

mailto:pmmi@pmmi.org

A copy can also be found on PMMI's web site at

http://www.pmmi.org/

The study's findings are based on more than 400 in-depth
telephone interviews conducted with decision-makers from
essentially all sectors of the market. This represents 1,895
plants, up from 1,844 plants last year. Industrial Research
Associates (IRA), Uwchland, PA, conducted the research. The
firm also administers PMMI's annual Shipments & Outlook Study.

The survey is free to PMMI members. There is a US$495.00 charge
to non-members for the complete survey. For more information,

Aljet Introduces Agricultural Chemical Drying System
------------------------------------------------------------

Fluid Energy Aljet, a division of Fluid Energy Processing and
Equipment Company, offers a flash drying system designed for
agricultural chemical drying, the Model 14 ThermaJet.

The unit dries a heat-sensitive agricultural product to a
final moisture level of below 0.5 percent. To accommodate
operation in the presence of solvents, the Model 14 ThermaJet
can operate with an inert gas recycling package using a
steam-to-air heat exchanger. A condenser is included in the
system to remove solvent and/or water vapor from the process
air stream before recycling. The system also includes a
process blower, PC or PLC-based controls with instrumentation,
a product collector and an exhaust fan.

The Model 14 ThermaJet can be designed to operate in a
horizontal configuration to meet customer space requirements.
Despite its unique configuration, the ThermaJet utilizes the
same technology used in vertical ThermaJet systems.
Low-pressure hot air is introduced into the dryer ring
through nozzles, creating a high velocity, rotating air
stream that rapidly sweeps the wet feed material into the
drying chamber. The turbulent hot air quickly deagglomerates
the feed stock and instantaneously flashes off moisture
without allowing the product temperature to increase above
a critical level.

Fluid Energy Aljet, the world's largest jet mill supplier,
represents over fifty years of experience in fine particle
process technology. Vigorous product development efforts,
supported by a securely rooted background in its industry,
have made Fluid Energy Aljet a leader in its field.

DCE Spotair - Compact Venting Filter
------------------------------------------------------------

DCE, Inc - Minneapolis, MN, has introduced the new DCE Spotair
filter - a compact, high efficiency venting filter designed
to reduce costs and improve productivity in material conveying
applications. Using all its 80 years experience in dust control,
DCE has developed this versatile, new range as a direct
response to customer requests. It will provide a simple,
cost-effective solution that minimizes waste and allows
valuable product to be successfully reclaimed and re-used.

Purpose-built for low air volume, venting operations, the DCE
Spotair is ideal for use within industries such as, agrofood
production, cement and minerals processing, flour milling,
food processing, grain and cereal milling and pharmaceutical
manufacturing. The filter is designed for straightforward
direct mounting onto elevators, conveyors, hoppers, and day
bins for effective point of use dust control. Alternatively,
it can be used as an integral part of a larger dust control
system to ensure full compliance with relevant health and
safety regulations.

The DCE Spotair is capable of capturing any dust generated
and returning it directly onto the process stream, while
maintaining a slight negative pressure in the system. This
eliminates wasteful and potentially harmful dust emissions
and ensures the customer can effectively reclaim valuable
material, improving production yield and efficiency. The
DCE Spotair can be fitted with a choice of filter media -
DCE Dalamatic filter media or DCE Unicell spun-bonded
polyester elements. Both have been proven in thousand of
dust control applications across the world and ensure
efficiency, continuous filter operation across a range of
filter areas from 22 ft² to 108 ft².

A choice of five DCE Spotair units is available to suit air
volumes from 200 ft²/m up to 560 ft²/m. Both horizontal and
vertical mounting casing options can be supplied to suit
customer requirements. All units incorporate a low noise
1HP fan set and are designed to operate within a wide
temperature range of 14F to 140F and to a pressure of +/-8"WG

Compact in size, the DCE Spotair is supplied fully assembled
ensuring easy installation, even in confined industrial
environments. Units are manufactured in stainless or mild
steel.
