WBF Issues Call for Papers for 2003 N. American Conference

CHANDLER, AZ (August 2, 2002) – World Batch Forum (WBF), a worldwide, non-commercial organization dedicated to the advancement of batch process manufacturing, is seeking papers from batch presenters for presentation at the WBF’s 2003 North American Conference.

Click hereThe conference will take place April 13-16 in Woodcliff Lake, NJ. Harry Gianakis, a staff engineer with DuPont and WBF chairman, noted that the annual conference has become the leading industry gathering dedicated to issues related to batch process manufacturing.

WBF must receive abstracts for proposed papers by September 27, 2002. The organization will notify presenters of acceptance by November 4, 2002. PowerPoint presentations and final versions of papers will be due March 14, 2003.

To request paper and presenter guidelines, please contact Dennis Brandl, WBF North American program committee chairman, at 919-852-5322 (email: dnbrandl@bellsouth.net ), or DeAnn Fedyski at World Batch Forum Headquarters at 480-893-8803 (email: deann@wbf.org ). While WBF will consider papers on any subject related to batch manufacturing, the organization is particularly interested in submissions on the following topics:

  • Services and products supporting 21 CFR Part 11 – User testimonials on remediation projects or green field Electronic Batch Record projects, discussions of pitfalls, hazards, and best practices for batch manufacturing in an FDA audited environment.
  • Applying S88 in manual operations – How the S88 model can be applied to manual and lightly automated systems in ways that would not require extensive automation.
  • Using the S88 model in continuous or discrete operations - Many batch systems are used in discrete or continuous operations for setup machine or flow setup. Presenters could address the issues associated using the S88 models, where they fit and where they have to be extended.
  • Batch scheduling - Presenters could focus on issues surrounding the two primary scheduling models -- Theory of Constraints and Process Flow Scheduling – or other methods of scheduling.
  • Interoperability – The WBF XML markup languages for S88 and S95 will be a year old by the 2003 conference. Presenters could address the interoperability issues, concerns, and lessons learned from the initial implementations. WBF also is interested in presentations on the “OPC for Batch” effort.
  • Project Execution Process – Identification of the key steps and critical success factors from project inception through start-up.
  • Front End Engineering – Discussion of the use of S88 models to document the scope, schedule and cost estimate of an automation project.
  • Batch Phase Logic Detail Design – Papers in this area could include discussions of phase state models, code organization, or network issues.
  • Practical Aspects to Operator Training – Papers could include discussions of simulation, training for errors, training for exceptional conditions, and setting up training environments.

About World Batch Forum

World Batch Forum, established in 1994, is a non-profit, professional organization promoting the exchange of information on the management, operation and automation of batch process manufacturing. Members include end-users, vendors, consultants and academics. In addition to hosting an annual conference with formal presentation and technical papers, the WBF provides organization, management, and structure to facilitate networking among its members and sharing of knowledge and information related to all aspects of batch processing.

WBF supplements the functions of ISA, AIChE, ISPE, CMA, and other related professional organizations by integrating a variety of management and technical disciplines needed to advance batch processing knowledge and technology. Visit our Worldwide Web site at www.wbf.org .

Flowability Measurement

Patented Powder Flow Rheometer on show at Powtech

Freeman Technology provides instruments that measure and classify the flow properties of powders. On show at Powtech 2002 (8 - 10 October; Nürnberg, Germany www.powtech.de ) will be the patented FT3 Powder Rheometer, a unique system that aids formulation of new materials, helps optimize handling and processing and can provide quality control standards that lead to real productivity and quality gains. The FT3 Powder Rheometer is an indispensable tool across many industries, and has been adopted by six of the top ten major pharmaceutical companies.

Click hereThe traditional unreliability of flowability measurements arising from the unknown packing condition of test samples is overcome using the FT3, with its novel pre-conditioning procedure that makes the data exceptionally reproducible. Most of the factors that affect powder flow properties may now be assessed independently. For the first time information databases on powders can stand alongside those on solids and fluids.

The FT3 uses a patented helical blade principle, where the blade displaces powder as it moves along a helical path through the sample. Gentle to aggressive flow patterns and flow rates can be achieved depending on the direction and speed of movement. All forces acting on the blade are measured and used to calculate the work done to make the powder flow. These energy measurements form the basis of all flowability assessments.

Breakfast Specialists in Uzwil

When it comes to breakfast cereals, the participants of an international specialist association have one thing in mind: Buhler extrusion systems.

Click hereThe renowned and internationally active American Association of Cereal Chemists (AACC) regularly organizes continuing education courses for its members. During the last such event, this specialist association invited its members to St.Gallen, near the headquarters of the Buhler Group in Switzerland. The subject of the course: “Breakfast cereals production technology”.

In the context of this continuing education course, 34 participants toured Buhler during half a day. The members of the association were informed in small groups on the latest process developments from Buhler. The purpose of the AACC course was to gain an overview of breakfast cereals production, from the raw materials and all the various process operations to packaging. Automation, preservation and shelf life were other special subject areas. Within the program, staff from the Buhler Extrusion Systems business unit demonstrated the process operations on the main machinery in practical operation.

The course participants’ responses were very positive. With their demonstrations in the test facilities of Buhler Extrusion Systems, the Buhler specialists fully satisfied the participants’ expectations and thereby also the course objectives. These positive experiences ensure that the Buhler brand will be remembered. And another 34 specialists from around the world will surely remember Buhler the next time they enjoy their breakfast cereals.

Buhler is a global Technology Group and System Partner for plant and equipment and for process expertise in the fields of Food Processing, Chemical Engineering, and Die Casting, with a worldwide payroll of about 6,500.
