Malvern's Dr. Neil Lewis Honored
Malvern,
UK -- Dr. E. Neil Lewis, Chief Technology Officer for
materials characterization company Malvern® Instruments, has
been honored by the University of Glamorgan in Wales with
the award of an Honorary Doctorate of Science for his
contribution to science and innovation. Now resident in the
US, Neil Lewis obtained his basic training and science
education at the University of Glamorgan more than 20 years
ago. He was described at the ceremony as being “one of our
most outstanding ambassadors in the world of science”.
Offering his congratulations, Paul Walker Managing Director
of Malvern Instruments said: “The award of an Honorary
Doctorate of Science is one of the most prestigious
accolades that can be bestowed by a UK university. I know
that I speak for the entire team at Malvern Instruments in
congratulating Neil on gaining such tremendous recognition.
We are extremely fortunate to have a great many high caliber
scientists in the Malvern team and are delighted to see such
public recognition of individual achievement.”
Following his graduation from the then Polytechnic of Wales
in 1980, Neil Lewis went on to complete a PhD in the field
of molecular spectroscopy. A series of posts at the National
Institutes of Health in Bethesda Maryland, US followed,
culminating in that of Senior Biophysical Researcher.
His
activities involved the development of novel methods for
chemical imaging of biological, medical and pharmaceutical
materials, including groundbreaking work in the development
of spectroscopic imaging microscopy. This utilized ideas
from remote sensing, and also detector technology originally
developed for military purposes by the US Government for
night vision and missile guidance.
In
1998 Neil Lewis founded Spectral Dimensions Inc. which
became the world leader in the manufacture of
instrumentation and software for chemical imaging. In 2006
the company was acquired by Malvern Instruments and Neil
joined the management team. Now as CTO he leads all of
Malvern’s innovation and new product development
initiatives.

R&D : Versatile Contained Filter
Drying
Liverpool,
England -- The PSL small scale contained filter dryer
provides maximum efficiency and versatility in R&D kilo
labs. This lab scale system has a 0.05 m2 filtration area
with 15L liquid capacity and typical 2 to 8L wet cake
capacity – perfect for multi product kilo facilities.
Typical batch sizes of 1 to 5KG quantities with a compact
system that can be easily moved round and receive slurry
liquid from multiple reactors.
When
developing compounds, containment requirements are always
stringent, especially for NCEs (new chemical entities).
Containment is achieved via a top mounted PSL ChargePoint,
100mm split valve, for vessel charging. A tilting mechanism,
which is integrated into the frame, allows complete
inversion of the vessel for contained powder discharge via
the same spilt valve. The PSL ChargePoint achieves < 10
microgrammes/m3 containment, further ancillaries can be
added to the standard valve to achieve < 1 microgramme/m3.
This
small mobile filter dryer is ideal for API chemical kilo
labs requiring a solution for filtration and drying of
slurry from multiple reactors of various sizes, as is
typical in R&D facilities. Compact design enables the unit
to be easily moved by a single person, within standard
walkway widths, to ensure this filter dryer can be easily
moved between labs / rooms.
For
added flexibility the base can be fitted with either filter
cloth or sintered metallic mesh providing the flexibility
required in a busy multi product kilo lab. Again, to
maximize versatility, this filter dryer is designed with C22
alloy product contacts for flexibility primarily in solvent
usage, the ChargePoint can also be in C22 alloy. 316L vessel
and split valve options are available when solvents to be
used are known to be less aggressive.
To
ensure minimum slurry losses it is important to keep pipe
lengths between reactor discharge and filter dryer to a
minimum. This small scale unit has been designed with
minimal height, enabling use in the tightest of areas.
This
complete system, vessel and split valve, is pressure rated
to 6 BarG. The vessel has integral spray balls for cleaning
in place and a sight glass & light fitted to enable viewing
of the process without breaching containment.
This
kilo lab filter dryer has an ATEX approved control panel
mounted on the trolley, plugs and sockets allow easy
connection and disconnection for quick and simple set up in
different locations.
This
small scale contained filter dryer is simple to set up and
operate, its versatility provides an invaluable addition to
any kilo lab.

Belt Cleaners : New Razor-Back
With Spray Bar
Allentown,
PA -- Building on our goal to provide solutions to your
conveyor belt problems, ASGCO Manufacturing introduces
Razor-Back with Spray Bar, a secondary belt cleaner that
uses a row of spray nozzles to spray a fine sharp stream of
water at a 30° angle onto the conveyor belt where the
carryback material is difficult to remove.
Water
is applied to the belt in an overlapping spray pattern which
places the particles into a fluid suspension, while
moistening the belt. The blades of the Razor-Back with Spray
Bar are then able to make consistent contact with the belt
surface to remove nearly 98% or more of the coarse
carry-back.
Applications
-High speed and tonnage above ground and underground mining
conveyor systems running in the most aggressive environments
-Concentrator/Ball/Mill conveyors where water is available.
-As the secondary cleaner on a single direction conveyor
where high levels of performance are demanded.
-Where the material to be removed is particularly sticky.
Contact ASGCO today for more information on Razor-Back with
Spray Bar at 1-800-344-4000.

New Pulsonic Bin Activators
Belleville,
NJ -- Pulsonic Bin Activators instantly clears bins,
hoppers and other mass flow vessels of compacted solids.
Removes disruptive materials from channels, ducts or
recesses.
This bin activator
incorporates a unique and patented system for the
movement of flow-resistant material. The system acts
positively on the material itself, rather than on the
containing vessel. This causes no damage to the
container, which can occur with vibration or severe
shock techniques.
The system consists of air
reservoirs and valve injectors, mounted on the vessel,
which induce air blasts on the compacted material inside
the vessel. An initial burst of compressed air acts
directly on the particles, causing some motion.
Then, while the material is
still in motion, a second burst is injected, evading the
activity of the air in the container. Subsequent bursts
are released, all within milliseconds of each other,
each creating an amplified effect over the previous
burst. The result is total activation and free flow of
material in as little as one second.
The Pulsonic Bin Activator
introduces multiple instantaneous sonic airbursts
directly into compacted material to instantly restore
flow, without severe shock and vibration methods that
often damage your equipment.

Mr. Provencal needs help with
mortar bagging:
After installing a new mortar
bagging line we started experiencing a lot of troubles at
our FIBC machine (uneven flow). The problem seems to come
from a hopper located directly underneath a mixer.
Here are some dimensions:
Material handled: mortar (sand and masonry cement)
Batches ranging from 2000 kg to 4000 kg
Ribbon mixer outlet is 8" x 8" (unloading time is about a
minute at 4000 kg)
Hopper dimensions: 80" long x 60" wide x 96" high
Walls angles: 60 and 68 deg.
Outlet size: 10" dia.
Sometimes material flows out
of control sometimes it just sits there. What did I do
wrong?

Vacuums on Steroids : Cement Applications
In an industry that has its
roots in ancient Roman times, and turns mountains into
dust with rugged equipment that pounds, crushes, and
grinds, a vacuum cleaner seems almost unnatural—a little
domestic. However, with recent supply shortages and
tighter EPA and OSHA regulations, Portland cement
manufacturers are finding vacuum cleaners to be the
ideal solution to reclaim product and comply with health
