Stratapac Packaging System Wins International Award
------------------------------------------------------------
Niro Inc. announced today that its Stratapac packaging system
has been named a winner of this years international DuPont
Awards competition. Stratapac is a patented system for the
packaging of powdered products to be used in hygienic
processing environments. The DuPont award is recognition of
this significant packaging systems innovation.
The Stratapac packaging system utilizes a tough, two-ply
plastic sack that replaces the traditional multi-ply paper
sacks such as those currently used for export milk powders.
Through the use of proprietary sealant resins and patented
sealing equipment, the inner and outer bags of the Stratapac
block-bottom sack are sealed independently and simultaneously.
An easy-open perforation is applied to enable the fully
sealed inner bag to be quickly and cleanly removed and taken
into a hygienic processing area.
The Stratapac system was invented and is produced by New
Zealand companies Holmes Packaging and Avalon Engineering
(a division of GEA-AG and sister company to Niro Inc.), the
recipients of the DuPont award. Niro Inc. is the exclusive
distributor of the system in North America.
The DuPont Awards for Innovation in Food Processing and
Packaging Technology is an international packaging industry
competition that recognizes food and non-food industry
advances that use plastic packaging material. Of the nine
award winners, Stratapac was the only industrial packaging
winner, the others all being consumer product packages.
The winners were announced February 10, 2000.
Niro Inc. is an international company specializing in the
development, design, and engineering of liquid and powder
processing equipment for the manufacture of products in
liquid, powder, granulate, agglomerate, or tablet form.
Niro products include spray dryers and coolers, fluid bed
systems, evaporators, packaging equipment, homogenizers,
membrane filtration systems, and pharmaceutical processing
systems.

AMEC to Web-Enable Its Process Simulation Technology
------------------------------------------------------------
ATLANTA, GA, Aug. 10 /CNW/ - AMEC plc (FTSE:AMEC) today
announced that it is developing an integrated web-enabled
version of its proprietary process simulation technology,
known as IDEAS. In addition to producing an internet-ready
version, AMEC will upgrade and maintain the functionality
available to its current clients, add a complete trainer
solution and enhance the IDEAS suite of tools and object
libraries in order to use these to compliment and extend the
value of its other offerings.
"We are making these investments to better serve our customers
and expand our market potential." said AMEC Technologies Group
President, Dennis Galange. "This is consistent with AMEC's
focus on using innovative technology solutions to generate
value for its customers."
Among the first to leverage the enhancements to IDEAS is
Operations Analysis, Inc. (www.operationsanalysis.com), an
AMEC-owned B2B company. A web-enabled version of the process
simulator will be included in their internet work centers.
Operations Analysis, whose initial vertical focus is the
mining industry offers on-line users an array of analysis and
optimization tools and methods; they consider IDEAS a key
technology differentiator for their business.
Developed and distributed by Simons Technologies, Inc., now an
AMEC company, IDEAS is an object-oriented simulation software
environment. It has the unique ability to provide, in a single
platform, solutions that cover the entire plant operations
lifecycle including continuous, batch and discrete processes.
IDEAS can interface to plant control systems and be used to
train operators in a virtual plant environment or test complex
plant processing scenarios.
Version 3.0 of IDEAS was released on August 1, 2000. Enhancements
in this most recent version include numerous upgrades to the
existing IDEAS libraries, the addition of routines for
thermodynamic calculations from the Virtual Materials Group's
(www.virtualmaterials.com), as well as, the inclusion of the
world's leading rigorous aqueous speciation calculation engine
from OLI systems, Inc. (www.olisystems.com).
In addition to operations analysis and process simulation,
AMEC's technology portfolio includes supply chain management,
data conversion, geographic and spatial information management,
frequency and spectrum management, application maintenance,
web development and systems integration.
AMEC is a provider of services and engineering solutions to
the world's infrastructure, manufacturing and process industries.
The company creates value for clients through the application of
technologies, alliances and innovative partnerships.

Automatic Pelletizer Knife Adjustment System Demonstrated
------------------------------------------------------------
Fulton, NY - Black Clawson Converting Machinery, LLC, announces
improvements with their patented Automatic Pelletizer Knife
Adjusting system, which will enable faster, more efficient
operator interface. The Automatic Pelletizer Knife Adjustment
system allows an operator to make pelletizer knife to die
plate clearance adjustments manually or automatically. It
also reduces wear of the pelletizer knives and die plate
while improving pellet quality.
Improvements include the addition of a faster and more powerful
CPU (computer processing unit) which will provide operators
with faster updates more accurate calculations for adjustment.
Upgrades to the Integrator II Supervisory Control System
include improved HMI (human-machine interface) WonderWare
software, allowing for operator ease and better data logging,
data tracking management, and control.
In a manually adjusting pelletizer, which almost all current
operating pelletizers are, the operator must make the knife
clearance adjustment. The operator may over-adjust, wearing
out the cutting knives or an expensive die plate. The operator
may not make a timely adjustment, resulting in pellets that
have tails or other defects. Also, differences from operator
to operator in adjusting technique may mean that the product
quality could vary greatly.
The Black Clawson Automatic Pelletizer Knife Adjusting System
can be run in a manual mode where the operator has control,
or after inputting a few simple instructions to the systems
microcomputer, the operator can select fully automatic
operation whereby the system has full, unattended control.
The system can be set to run in controlled gap or contact
modes. It can be on a time base interval or closed loop blade
wear sensing mode that continually tracks the machines’
status. Knife wear can be tracked and an advisement of blade
set replacement time will be made.
Demonstrations with the Automatic Pelletizier Knife Adjusting
System in conjunction with the Integrator II and pelletizer
die plates can be arranged in the Research and Technical
Center in Fulton, New York. The Integrator II gives operators
access to all process control data through a Windows interface.
The simulation will mimic live conditions seen in a normal
processing environment.

Mr. Greaves need help milling sodium bicarbonate:
We are using a Pin/Beta mill to reduce a 90 micron D50
bicarbonate down to a 20 micron D50 size. The problem is
that the mill is "flagging" with shell like deposits coating
it and causing imbalance induced vibrations requiring daily
shutdowns. Whilst the feed stuff to the mill is specified as
having <0.2 % H2O content we suspect that it is higher and
believe this to be the cause of our problems.
I would be pleased to hear of other bicarb mill operators
experiences.
