"Get Ready for Fall" Clean-up at Powder and Bulk Dot Com
------------------------------------------------------------
You may have noticed that we have changed the page layout on
our site. We are going through a full-fledged, clean-up of
Powder and Bulk Dot Com to get ready for September. Why
September? We are expecting more traffic after the August
holidays are over.
Our goals in cleaning up are several:
> Banners. We want to be able to use industry standard banners
on the top of all our web pages. If you didn't know (and we
didn't know this a year ago!) there is a standard banner size,
measured in pixels, it's 468 pixels wide by 60 pixels high.
>Reduce load times. Our load times have been reduced by as
much as 20 seconds/page for someone accessing our site on a 28.8k
modem. How did we do it? By eliminating graphics such as the
button bar we used for navigation and putting text links in
their place. Also by reducing image file sizes, specifically
our banner ads.
You can do it too! We found a neat web site to do this called
GIF Wizard. We have been able to cut most of our banner graphics
to half their original size with no loss in appearance! If this
sounds interesting to you, you should check out their web site
for a FREE analysis of your web site graphics at:
http://www.gifwizard.com/pn=49913
An example is one particular banner ad (an animated gif file)
was reduced from a 50 seconds load time to less than 15 seconds,
amazing! And the ad looks great!
>Wider pages. We increase our page with from 650 pixels to
almost 700 pixels. This give you more information in the upper
part of the screen for quicker browsing.
>Better navigation. We now have text links to the major areas
of the site with descriptive text beneath the link. We believe
that this will better guide visitors to the places they want to
go to on the site, specially, first-time visitors.
>Linking graphics. We have added a special page for those of
you who want to add a link from your site to ours. Colorful
Powder and Bulk Dot Com logos are available for free at:
http://www.powderandbulk.com/pb_services/link_to_us.htm
We hope you like the changes. Currently, all the upper level
pages on the site are done and we are working our way through
the +300 directory listing pages. We hope to have it all
completed in a few more weeks, knock on wood!
Let me know what you think about the changes,
Joe Taylor

Inexpensive Alternative to Plastic Pallets, The Palcon Pallet
------------------------------------------------------------
What is the Palcon Pallet?
The Palcon Pallet was developed for use in the food industry
or any industry that can not risk the possibility of insect
infestation or mold in their product.
Unlike a fumigated pallet, the Palcon Pallet is dip treated.
Dip treating allows the chemical to be absorbed via osmosis
into the core of the wood. This provides protection against
wood boring insects, decay fungi, and mold for the life of the
pallet.
The Palcon Pallet is treated with U.S Borax's Tim-bor(r)
Industrial Wood Preservative. Tim-Bor(r) is an EPA registered
chemical consisting of Disodium Octaborate Tetrahydrate, which
is highly toxic to fungi and wood boring insects. Tim-Bor(r)
is a safe product, which has low acute oral and dermal toxicity
to animals and humans.
The Palcon Pallet is an inexpensive alternative to plastic pallets,
and is ideal for use in industries that can not tolerate wood
boring insect infestation or mold.

Call For Photographs!
------------------------------------------------------------
We would like to personally thank Claudia Sears of Geometrica,
Inc. for the great photos she supplied for our home page:
http://www.powderandbulk.com
The two pictures, in the form an animated gif, are of a
Geomertica Freedome(r) that was constructed to contain the
mineral processing area (my guess crushers!) for a copper mine
called Empresa Mineria de Mantos Blancos in Antofagasto, Chile.
The photos are 'before' and 'after' showing how the dome
helped with dust control around that equipment. The dome
was erected with minimal disruption to the operation plant.
(Editor's Note: If you look closely at the 'before' photograph
you can see the framework of the dome being erected while the
plant is operating!)
Thanks for the photos Claudia, mailto:claudia@geometrica.com
,
you can visit Geometrica's web site at:
http://www.geometrica.com
We would love to have your photo of a bulk materials process,
packaging, conveying or handling situation for our home page.
If you have a favorite action shot of bulk materials handling
at its best, please email us a jpeg or gif of the photo with
a description of what is in the photo for our home page.
Full credit and the description of the photo will be given in
the image tag under the photo! An image tag is the message
that pops up when one passes their mouse pointer over the
image on the web page.
Photographs will be changed every two weeks to give everyone
a chance to be included. Also, there is talk that we may
archive photographs with full-text description, photo
credit and a hot link to the photograph's owners home page.
Send your photograph and description to,

Revolutionary Fabric Seal for Rotary Equipment
------------------------------------------------------------
The development of the new fabric seal material for the rotary
equipment industry started with the statement from our material
supplier, "There will be no further shipments of roll material
because the company that we get our fibers from in England
simply vaporized. They shut their doors and went out of business.
Sorry for the inconvenience."
The search started immediately to find a new substitute seal
material that would work in high-temperature rotary equipment
applications. The search was unsuccessful. So we decided to
develop an exclusive material from scratch that would exceed
industry need and requirements.
The result is IGS FabriSeal (TM) that is a 100% non-asbestos
material comprised of para-aramids, meta-aramids, pre-ox silicates,
and other proprietary ingredients. While the material feels soft
and supple, it is highly abrasive-resistant with temperature
application up to 2,000 degrees F. or 1,100 degrees C. The material
can be custom fabricated into seals for both the feed and
discharge end of rotary calciners, coolers, dryers, and kilns.
The seals are easy to install and can be retrofitted to any
rotary equipment. The suppleness of the seal provides a more
neutral or "relaxed" position that accommodates a greater amount
of radial movement or "run-out" of the shell during operation.
Life expectancy of the seal ranges from six months to over one
year. Seal life can be extended by "rough" grinding the shell
prior to installation. "Rough" grinding, using an ordinary
hand-held surface grinder, is simply the removal of the rough
nodules from the shell surface. Current customers state this
quick procedure extends product life by a factor of almost
two.
Some of the benefits of using the seal are: lowers production
and maintenance costs, minimizes "in-leakage" and "out-leakage"
of air, increases fuel efficiency and flame temperature, improves
equipment performance and dust collector efficiency, increases
capacity through improvements in fan life and draft, and reduces
gas volume and velocity thus saving the user money.
The seal can be used in virtually any rotary equipment industry
including aggregate, asphalt, bulk granular materials, cement,
chemical, cosmetic, fertilizer, food and renderings, lime
production and recovery (pulp mills), iron ore pelletizing,
petrochemical, pharmaceutical, and specialty pyroprocessing
to name but a few. The seal is not recommended for use in
sulfuric acid applications as the acid will dissolve the seal
material.
Free samples for evaluation, along with MSDS sheets are available
from the company.
