| In Memorial
: Dr. Andrew W. Jenike (1914-2003)
It
is our sad duty to inform you that Dr. Andrew W. Jenike
passed away on Friday, August 8, 2003.
Dr. Jenike created the
foundation for the science of bulk solids handling we all
use today. Through his research, starting at the University
of Utah, Dr. Jenike was able to identify basic solids flow
properties, designed laboratory equipment to measure these
flow properties (the Jenike Shear Tester), and recognized
that the bin and feeder must work in unison to ensure
reliable material flow.
In 1966, Dr. Jenike founded
the renowned consulting firm of Jenike
& Johanson, Inc. I began working with him in 1972
as a young laboratory technician. Back in the "old
days", Andy, as we all called him, was very
passionate about solids handling, and his inspiration took
root in all of us who worked with him. He is the most
unique person I have ever met and I consider him the
Father of bulk solids flow theory.
But there is more to Andy
than the business side. Personally, he was caring,
thoughtful, and most of all, unselfish. I remember one
time when he asked me to trim the small patch of grass
outside our office (with a pair of scissors no less). As I
began the task, soon he was right there beside me with his
own pair of scissors, clipping away. An avid mountain
climber, Andy was very fit. Once at a company outing, we
all decided to climb (walk) Mount Monadnock in Jaffrey,
NH. We, as a group, were about half way up when we met
Andy, who was already on his way back down. I will always
treasure these memories of Andy.
Today, Dr. Jenike's
approach to bulk solids flow and test procedures are part
of US ASTM standards. His theories are also widely used
throughout Europe. His early publication, "Storage
and Flow of Solids, Bulletin 123 of the Utah Engineering
Experiment Station", is widely read and cited in
numerous technical papers and patents. If it were not for
this and his many other contributions most hoppers would
be designed with no consideration of flow properties,
hopper geometry or material of construction. His concept
of "mass flow" allows all of us to build
equipment and systems without flow problems.
I am grateful to Dr. Jenike
for his work, dedication, leadership and friendship. He
will be sorely missed, both personally and professionally.
He is survived by his lovely wife, Una, and their two
sons, Michael and Ian.

| Free Posters
: CEMA Safety Posters Now Available Online
Naples,
Florida -- CEMA's Safety Posters were designed by the CEMA
Safety Committee as a service to the industry. They are
designed to supplement to a user's in-plant safety
program. Five posters are available including ones
for: screw conveyors, bucket elevators, package conveyors,
baggage conveyors and bulk conveyors.
These free posters are in
high resolution TIF and PNG file formats. You can modify
the top right panel to include your company's safety
program slogan or print them as they are. The type of
printing and poster material and coating is left to the
user to determine based on the anticipated placement of
the posters.
The TIF Files are
approximately 6 MB in size and the PNG files are under
1MB. To download a poster, simply "right
click" on the safety poster you want to download and
save it to your computer. Here is a link to the
poster download page
http://www.cemanet.org/safety/posters.htm
The pictograms on these
posters mirror, to the extent practical, the pictograms on
the associated CEMA Safety Labels which should also be
placed on your equipment. See the CEMA Safety Page for
more details on the Safety Labels and Safety Label
Placement Guidelines.
Founded in 1933, CEMA is
the trade association of leading North American conveyor
equipment manufacturers and engineering firms. CEMA also
makes available to both member and nonmember companies,
safety labels for all types of conveyor equipment as well
as useful technical information and manuals. For further
information on CEMA or its member companies, or to order
safety labels or technical information, visit our web site

| Foods :
High-Speed Cross Feeders for Packaging Lines
Erie,
PA -- Eriez has introduced new high precision, cross
feeders designed for use in food packaging applications.
These high speed, high deflection and high volume
vibratory cross feeders and conveyors distribute product
into vertical, fill and seal or weigh scale equipment
using peripheral discharge trays capable of delivering
from 100 to 1,000 cu ft of material per hour.
Eriez' HS (High-Speed) and
HD (High Deflection) vibratory feeders featuring low
energy, AC electromagnetic drives provide superior
reliability, precise cycling and low operating cost. The
high deflection series is recommended when feeding
extremely lightweight materials where a higher
angle-of-deflection and lower frequency produces more
accurate feed characteristics. Both HS and HD series use
the same AC drive enabling systems to easily cycle up to
100 times per minute.
Eriez' VMC Series
Electromagnetic Conveyors use a two-mass vibrating system
powered by one or more electromagnetic drives. Specially
designed corrosion-resistant fiberglass springs amplify
the stroke and are adjustable for easy fine-tuning of the
conveyor's motion. They contain use no sliding or rotating
parts to wear out, or belts and bearings to fail. A
variable voltage controller allows "watch-like"
precision in the control of conveyor amplitude. Units are
available in base or suspension mounting.
Eriez' cross feeders use
peripheral discharge trays made of food grade, stainless
steel. Units can include screens to eliminate fines or
damaged product during packaging.

Coal : Innovative Dustless
Stacker System
Boulder,
Colorado -- In many of the coal-burning utilities around
the world there is the menacing issue of dust emissions
from discharging to open stockpiles on power plant
properties. The severity of the problem is often amplified
if neighbors of the plants have dust settling on their
porch.
Typically, these power
plants have found there is only one choice as a solution;
apply wet suppression in some fashion to the coal at the
loading point of the stack out conveyor. Unfortunately,
this option carries baggage with it. For example,
chemicals applied can be costly year in and year out.
Further, it is difficult to apply wet products to coal in
cold temperatures. Lastly, there are always maintenance
issues with pumps and spray nozzles, not to mention
potentially reducing the Btu value of the coal.
This passive dust
suppression control technology is based upon a fluid
dynamics program that creates a stilling chamber in which
the dust is contained in a controlled atmosphere with
minimal motion which allows the precipitation of dust out
on to the load of coal. In conveyor to conveyor transfer,
this has resulted in reduced dust emissions in the
workspace from 30 mg/m3 to ambient dust readings as low as
0.10 mg/m3 running 1400 tons/hour of Powder River Basin
coal.
The Dustless Stacker
utilizes this technology for conveyor discharges to coal
stockpiles. We create a stilling zone where induced air
velocity is minimized and the air and dust is contained
and settles into the pile rather than blowing to the
neighbors.

Mr. van Niekerk needs
advise on screw conveyors:
We are proposing to feed 12
mm lime pebbles from the bottom of a 12 meter long bunker
into a bucket elevator with a screw conveyor.
Will the screw conveyor
cause degradation of the lime over this distance of 12
m? Is a screw the correct application in the bottom
of a receiving hopper/bunker? Please comment and
provide some suggestions.

Mr. Coward wants to
"tilt" shipping containers:
I am looking for a
proprietary device which tilts 20 ft shipping containers
on end from the back of a truck, holds them up while
top-loading with a hatch in the door (maybe even give them
a shake every now and again to settle) and tips them back
down onto the truck when full. Single body-truck
only used.
Product is around 400
kg/cu.m (IE gross weight when full approx 18
tonnes). Has anyone got, used, selling such devices
- preferably in Australia.
