HIM : Malvern Insitec used to
Optimize Silica Sand Milling
Malvern,
UK -- Product consistency and mill control at HIM,
specialists in processing hard minerals to fine powders,
have been transformed following the installation of a
Malvern Insitec on-line particle size analyzer and a
Hosokawa Micron classifier.
At
HIM’s ball mill facility in Derbyshire, UK, the continuous
stream of particle size data produced by the Insitec is used
to automatically control classifier speed, with operators
simply inputting the established set points for the required
grade of silica powder. Product consistency is now exemplary
and customer satisfaction and confidence has dramatically
increased. The effectiveness of process control has been
significantly enhanced and the manpower required to run the
unit substantially reduced.
As
a result of the improvements in product quality, bulk
transfer of the silica powder to the customer is now
acceptable; before the changes the product was shipped in
paper sacks on pallets. In addition, HIM’s ability to
consistently produce a more closely specified product has
allowed its customer to access new markets. When off-line
sieve analysis was used, the product was specified only in
terms of a certain fraction greater than 53 microns, but
other parameters are measured continuously, and controlled.
“We now operate 24/7,” says managing director Kelvin Rhodes.
“Our throughput has increased by around 60% and we require
significantly less manual input in terms of analytical
effort. The Insitec system has been highly reliable and
maintenance requirements are low, despite operating in a
vibrating and harsh environment.“
The Insitec is an industrially robust solution for on-line
particle size measurement, based on laser diffraction
technology. Continuous operation of the Insitec at HIM has
been characterized by high reliability and minimal
maintenance requirements. The data produced have afforded
plant management greater process insight, facilitated plant
optimization, particularly during commissioning, and
provided HIM with a platform for further process
development.

Kason : Fluid Bed Dryer-Screener
System
MILLBURN,
NJ -- A new Circular Vibratory Fluid Bed Dryer-Screener
System from Kason Corporation reduces moisture content of
bulk materials, removes agglomerates and dust, and
discharges on-size material into bulk bags. The pre-packaged
system consists of a 48-inch (1220 mm) diameter circular
fluid bed processor, heater, blower and 48-inch (1220 mm)
diameter vibratory screener.
The
circular fluid bed dryer is reportedly half the size and
weight of a rectangular fluid bed dryer of equivalent
capacity, and allows all primary system components to be
consolidated on a shippable frame.
According to the company, inherent strength of the circular
processor eliminates the need for heavy-gauge walls and
cross braces otherwise required to withstand continuous
vibration, allowing vibratory motors to be downsized. The
circular unit also requires only one air inlet and outlet
and has fewer weld seams, reducing overall size and
construction cost, especially when finished to 3A, FDA, and
BISSC sanitary standards.
Cleaning time is reportedly cut by more than 50 percent due
to the reduction in interior seams, and accessibility
afforded by a quick-disconnect housing.
Material fed into the top inlet of the dryer descends into
the fluid bed chamber where it vibrates on a circular screen
within a rising column of heated air ducted into the bottom
of the chamber from the upstream heater/blower. The
continuous airflow, and vibration induced by two vibratory
motors and spring suspension, separate and fluidize
individual particles, maximizing surface area and drying
efficiency. The vibratory action also causes material to
travel from the center of the screen to a discharge spout at
the screen's periphery in controlled spiral pathways on a
first-in-first-out basis, ultimately discharging dried
material into the top-center inlet of the circular vibratory
screener.
The
circular fluid bed processor is available in diameters from
18 to 84-inch (460mm to 2135mm), and the circular vibratory
screener from 18 to 100-inch (460mm to 2540mm), for
low-capacity laboratory and pilot plant testing to
high-volume drying and/or screening on a batch or continuous
basis.

Knauf Engineering : Orders High Capacity Packaging Line
Beckum,
Germany -- The Knauf Engineering company placed the
order for a Beumer high capacity palletizer Beumer
PaletPac and a stretch film packaging machine Beumer
Stretch Hood S which shall be installed in the
Rottleberode works of the company Knauf Deutsche
Gipswerke KG.
The task demands to ensure a
gentle palletizing of the bags and furthermore to
achieve a proper stacking pattern at high capacity. Some
of the products to be palletized cannot be turned as
others without any difficulties at the torsion bar.
First the bags are
transported to the palletizer Beumer PaletPac via a
short feeding section with a bag flattener, which
presses surplus air out of the bags. The Beumer PaletPac
achieves the demanded capacity of 2.400 bags/hour at
5-bonded pattern, 2.600 bags/hour at 10-bonded pattern.
When realizing the system configuration the customer's
requirements have been considered int the system's
equipment.
The bag flow is separated by
a guide plate bag distributor. Two clamp turning devices
being installed side by side as well as double spacing
and layer configuration and stacking pattern. The
installed double slide gate is frequency-controlled and
ensures an operation treating the bags especially gently
as well as high efficiently due to the soft start-up.
Then the pallet stacks are
transported via a full pallet transport system to the
stretch film packaging machine Beumer Stretch Hood S and
are packaged at the demanded capacity of 75
pallets/hour.

Ms. Henry needs help with
vacuum sealing bags:
Hi everyone, I'm looking for
a vacuum/heat sealing system for 30" - 36" wide PE or
co-extruded bags (holding approximate. 50 lbs of powder)
placed inside cardboard boxes in a manual, batch
environment.
We don't have a lot of room
and the bags would be sealed manually. We'd love the
flexibility of purging the system with nitrogen, too, if
possible.
Any ideas out there? Our
powders can be very dusty, so that is a limitation, also.

Thanks for any ideas,

Mr. Majors wants to feed sodium
silicate powder:
I am a complete novice when
it comes to bulk powder handling and I need some assistance
in sourcing some equipment. I have a process in which
I need to apply sodium silicate powder to a 44" wide x 97"
long panel at a rate of about 30 ounces per panel.
Can someone please tell me
where I can find a dispenser that can do this?
