From the Editor

Hi Everyone,

We've been having some problems with our Help Forum and Job Fair, both are discussion-group type formats.  Those boards were slow to load and hard to maintain.

Well, we have installed a new forum software with more features, like when someone replies to your message - the board will automatically emails you that you have a reply posted!  You can see the new forums here, at these web addresses:

New Help Forum
http://www.powderandbulk.com/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.pl?board=general

The Job Fair is also running on the same system.  We have split the Job Fair into two parts, one for posting job openings and the other for posting your resume.

Job Fair - Positions Available

Job Fair - Resume Search

We hope you like these updates, and more importantly, we want your feedback on these new additions.  Please have a look at them, poke around, sign up, post your messages, then let me know how we can do it better.  Without your help, where would we be!

Our goal is to provide information to improve your business by using the resources available on the Internet.

Steady Flow From Bins and Hoppers

Powder and Bulk Dot Com Welcomes a New Sponsor:

Nippon Magnetics

MagHammer™

Click hereThe MagHammer's patented design provides an easy-to-install and easy-to-use solution for previously difficult problems of material handling for solids, powders and bulk dry materials.  Operating on electromagnetic principals, it delivers a powerful impact performance for complete and steady flow from bins, hoppers, cyclones and transfer lines.  Since the MagHammer is sealed and has only one moving part, maintenance is very low.

Safety is very important in any workplace.  Bins and hoppers are usually located high and in difficult locations not easily reached.  The MagHammer can eliminate the need to send someone climbing to "bang" or "beat" on the bin or hopper, greatly reducing the potential for injury.  Also minimizes the abuse to the equipment!

TubeMagnet™

The NTM42 Series tube magnets are designed specifically for OEMs and magnet grates users. Standard sizes include: 23.6 mm diameter x 150 mm and 23.6 mm diameter x 250 mm. Other lengths and diameters to meet individual requirements are available on request.

Consistent high quality construction and powerful rare earth magnetic material combine to make these tube magnets the perfect choice for food magnetic grades or industrial separation applications.

"The Kroosher"

Multi-Frequency Adapter Delivers Rapid Screening of Fine Powders

New Rochelle, NY - Kroosh Technologies Inc. presents new generation of the Kroosh Multi-Frequency Adapter, the "Kroosher", for vibratory screening. The Kroosher outperforms most conventional screeners and ultrasonic systems by as much as 6 times on metal powders. Kroosh has been successful with screening ultra-light powders with 10-15 times greater productivity. Increasing efficiency from 50 to 95 per cent has been achieved on variety of difficult-to-screen materials.

Click hereThe Kroosher is a purely mechanical device, without any electronic or pneumatic components, that attaches to a vibratory screen. It induces a wide spectrum of frequencies over the surface of the screen.  This device allows for finer screening, fights mesh blinding and particles agglomeration, significantly increases throughput rate and improves quality of oversize. Kroosher can be used with dry material or slurries, metallic and abrasive powders, with any mesh opening (from 10 micron to over 50 mm), it can be retrofitted to most round or rectangular vibratory screeners.

This device's effect allows for more efficient use of energy and constant stability of the resonance mode on the screening surface.

For the complete list of test results visit our web site. Testing is free of charge at Kroosh's New Rochelle, NY facility. A rental program is available.

World Batch Forum 2002 N. American “Meeting of the Minds”

Best Practices for Management, Operation, and Automation of Batch Processes Call For Papers

Click herePhoenix, AZ - World Batch Forum is seeking quality papers for their 9th Annual North American “Meeting of the Minds.” The conference will be held April 7-10, 2002 in Woodcliff Lake, New Jersey at the Hilton Woodcliff Lake (Newark area). Papers should promote the understanding of emerging batch processing technologies and automation standards. Papers based on applications with a problem and solutions approach that include measurable economic benefits are of special interest and are encouraged.

Abstracts are due September 1, 2001 with notification of tentative acceptance on November 1, 2001. Final papers will be due March 8, 2002.  WBF is seeking papers to include the following areas, but not limited to:

  •  Case Studies: Cost savings, operational savings, problems and successful solutions
  • Regulatory: 21 CFR Part 11, Electronic Batch Records, Validation, and GAMP
  • Batch Manufacturing: ERP/MES evolution, supply models, plant architecture, and plant management solutions
  • Standards: Reaping the benefits of international and corporate standards
  • Life-Cycle Analysis: Product and Process life cycle analysis
  • Batch Automation: Concept, planning, design, implementation, testing, and operation

New for this year is a mentoring program where novice writers can team up with an experienced writer who will advise and guide them in producing a paper. This will include a more interactive review process than the traditional abstract, draft, review, and final paper process. This is intended to help and encourage the novice writer with quality batch experience to develop into a published author. Application to the mentoring program must be made by August 1, 2001.

Floating Pontoon Installation

Installation on Thames Addresses Cement Storage Problem

Portasilo Bulk Handling Systems has supplied the cement and pulverized fuel ash (PFA) storage installation needed by Hanson Premix to supply Canary Wharf Contractors Ltd at Canary Wharf, London. This is part of the burgeoning Canary Wharf South development area where intensive building operations have citied as London's latest tourist attraction.

Click hereRestricted Thames-side land availability and supply via cement supply boat, prompted use of a floating pontoon for installation of this storage complex, which comprises four silos.

Three of the silos are filled conventionally, from road tankers. Two each store 100 tons of cement and the third 62 tons of PFA. The fourth, 200 ton capacity cement silo is filled from a cement supply boat and transfers cement to the other two cement silos using a pneumatic conveying system.

The silos were specially reinforced for the anticipated pitch and roll of the pontoon. The installation was completed in a very short time frame during Hanson's Christmas shutdown, in order to avoid interference with the program for this massive construction project.

Portasilo Ltd was founded in 1953, on the basis of an innovative and successful approach to onsite cement storage and discharging in the days before pre-mixed cement road tankers were available. Since then the company has developed a wide ranging of tailor made bulk storage and handling solutions for particulate materials throughout process industry. This latest application has seen the Company utilize its now considerable broad experience and expertise to assist a client in construction, the first sector in which it made its mark.

Hot Messages from the Help Forum

People post their requests for help and offer their suggestions to others in our open forum.

Mr. Maitland needs a pneumatic conveying system:

I would like to transfer a bin load of 'max Cover' (kitty litter size granules) approx 500kgs through a hose/pipe arrangement 11/2" diameter to spray a distance up to 5-10 meters onto a steel ladle. Using a pneumatic system of some form. e.g. venturi type arrangement. What would I need to do to the bin & what equipment would be best to install to do the above job? I only want it to be as simple as possible.

Thanks,
Tod Maitland

Mr. Johnson wants a feeder:

We have a process that requires the feeding of dry burnt lime powder into a wet, steamy environment. Any ideas as to the best type of feeder would be gratefully appreciated.
