Blend Uniformity Workshop Coming Soon
------------------------------------------------------------
PQRI Workshop on Blend Uniformity
September 7-8, 2000
Crystal Gateway Marriott
Arlington, VA
Blend Uniformity Working Group Research Objectives
Pharmaceutical blending operations are designed to provide
uniform distribution of drug particles in a powder blend. In
addition to drug content uniformity in the final product,
blending operations can also affect certain other product
attributes such as drug dissolution and tablet hardness.
Legal precedence and current regulations suggest that blend
testing should be carried out for each production batch to
minimize the likelihood of releasing a batch that does not
truly meet end product specification. However, the general
manufacturing experience suggests that, for most powder blends,
blend testing for every production batch is not necessary,
and unit dose sampling using a sampling thief can pose
significant problems.
The gap in the scientific understanding and regulations are
a source of continued debate, and from an industry perspective,
may produce undesirable regulatory action. Also, limitations
of current powder sampling procedures may be diverting
significant time and resources to address a redundant
question. The PQRI research efforts will fill the existing
science-regulation gap by;
-Identifying when blend uniformity tests are needed to
assure product quality,
-Developing a more effective method for testing blend
uniformity when such tests are necessary,
-Enhancing confidence in end product content uniformity
tests to assure batch-to-batch content uniformity without
the need for an in-process blend uniformity test and
-in the long term improve the fundamental understanding of
the blending process to minimize uncertainty and accelerate
development of pharmaceutical processes.

AccuRate Receives Governor's New Product Award for MECHATRON
------------------------------------------------------------
SCHENCK AccuRate, Whitewater, WI was honored by the Wisconsin
Society of Professional Engineers during the 31st Annual
Governor’s New Product Award (GNPA) program. The SCHENCK
AccuRate MECHATRON took top honors for the Large Company
Division among Wisconsin corporations demonstrating innovations
in new product development.
Announcing the MECHATRON family of feeders. Schenck AccuRate
has not only engineered a superior feeder design that makes
sense, but introduces revolution automation features that
drastically reduce capital investment and installation costs.
The new MECHATRON feeder features "Mechatronics", a new
design philosophy used to describe the total integration of
mechanics and electronics. All control components and motors
are integrated and pre-wired in the feeder so that commissioning
is accomplished by bringing power and communications to the
unit for near plug and play functionality. The MECHATRON
was chosen for the Governor’s New Product award due to the
following product attributes:
-The MECHATRON is a bulk solids feeder that completely
disassembles from the non-process side. Augers, hoppers and
other components easily clamp in and out for maintenance,
cleaning and reconfiguration or service. The extension hopper
can stay in place during cleaning, reconfiguration, or service.
-The feeder concept of the MECHATRON accommodates both flexible
wall and stainless steel hoppers, conically shaped for better
mass flow.
-The MECHATRON is a feeder that can be purchased for
volumetric use and upgraded for gravimetric operation,
supports single screw or twin-screw configurations, internal
or external agitation, multiple motor/control arrangements
and more.
-A separate control enclosure is built into the support
structure for the MECHATRON®. The unique hanging design
reduces costs and offers multiple hanging alternatives.

Port Terminal and New-Generation Portalink in Sharjah
------------------------------------------------------------
In the new port of Sharjah (United Arab Emirates), the
International Foodstuffs Co. has constructed a new port
terminal with a storage capacity of about 83,000 metric tons.
The company now additionally operates a new Buhler Portalink
600/80 RK in Hamriyah Port.
The new installation now allows very large vessels (up to
Cape-size) to be unloaded, which has a very beneficial impact
on the freight and unloading costs. The port facility was
designed so as to permit an expansion at a later date to
double the existing storage capacity and unloading capacity.
Terminal as transfer station
The port terminal is currently designed as a transfer station,
which means that the mill is not located at the same site.
The unloaded material is placed into intermediate storage
consisting of ten large steel bins holding 7350 metric tons
each and three small steel bins with a holding capacity of
3360 tons each. Before the material is weighed on an MWBS
receiving scale, it is screened by MKZM drum sieves and
DFRA magnetic separators. The storage bins are loaded at a
throughput rate of 600 tons per hour by belt-and-bucket
elevators and chain conveyors. An aspiration system keeps
all the equipment dust-free.
Constructed in only six months
Material discharge from the flat-bottom bins at a rate of
400 tons per hour is performed by chain conveyors and
belt-and-bucket elevators. The material is either loaded
out in bulk onto trucks via loadout bins, or it is weighed
and packed by two bagging or Big Bag stations before also
being loaded onto trucks. The installation of the electrical
and mechanical installation was completed within a mere
six months.
Optimized ship unloader
Since 1995, the International Foodstuffs Co. has been
operating a ship unloader of type Portalino in the port
of Sharjah, with a throughput of 300 tons per hour. The
low operating costs and high availability of this machine
are likely reasons why this same technology was applied
a second time for the new grain terminal in Hamriyah Port.
The new Portalink 600/80 unloader is based on the same
technical design as that of the standard machine with
a throughput of 600 tons per hour. But because "Cape-size"
bulk carriers of up to 120,000 DWT must be unloaded in
Hamriyah Port, the sizing of the support structure had
to be increased. The result of this new development
is a boom that is five meters longer and a central
section that is also five meters taller. This support
structure will also be used in the future as a new
standard platform for the revised Portalink 800/80
(800 tons per hour).
Same technology, lower cost
This modularization of the range of unloader types
enables Buhler to offer the same technology and same
quality at significantly lower cost. By optimizing
the design using state-of-the-art calculation methods,
it has additionally been possible to reduce the total
weight compared with the unloaders existing up to
now by some 30 percent while maintaining the throughput
at the same level. Thanks to the lower resulting pier
and rail loadings, unloaders offering a higher throughput
can be applied on existing pier infrastructures without
requiring expensive reconstruction.

Vibratory Conveyor Offers Metal Detection Capabilities
------------------------------------------------------------
ERIE, PA - Eriez introduces its new VMC Vibratory Conveyor
with integral Model VC Metalarm metal detector. The system
provides precise and efficient conveying of dry bulk materials,
while the metal detector helps protect the product from
metal contamination.
The VMC Series has the advantages of a mechanical conveyor -
higher deflection and lower frequency - with the trouble-free
service of an electromagnetic conveyor - no belts, bearings
or parts to wear out. Specially designed fiberglass springs
amplify the trough stroke and are adjustable to provide easy
fine-tuning of conveyor motion.
A variety of trough sizes are available to match the conveyor
to specific application requirements. The VMC Series
Electromagnetic Conveyors can be specially designed to help
food processors meet and exceed their sanitary standards.
Eriez new Model VC Metalarm Metal Detector can easily be
retrofitted directly to the tray of existing vibratory
conveyors. The metal detector head, which contains the
electrical coils, is mounted in up to a 3.3 ft. (1 meter)
cut out in the floor of the vibrating tray.
The Model VC is a simple way to protect downstream equipment
such as crushers, granulators and chippers. Packaging
operations can also benefit from the assurance that packaged
products are metal-free. This unit includes the search coil
and a Model 3500 Control (designed for 115V/240V 50/60 Hz
service). Audible and visual alarms are available as
optional extras.
