Samplers : QCEC Under New Management

Des Moines, IA -- Quality Control Equipment Company, Inc. (QCEC) is under new management and has a new identity. The manufacturer of dry material samplers was purchased by Electric Pump of Des Moines, Iowa, in 2005, and has adopted a new brand identity to reflect the durability for which the company has been known for the past four decades.

“We saw a great opportunity to buy a company with a great reputation for quality,” says John Miller, vice-president of Electric Pump. “Customers who have bought samplers from QCEC in the past have experienced many years of trouble-free operation and we think there is great potential in making that kind of durability available to customers who don’t know us.”

QCEC staff and production equipment moved to Electric Pump’s location in Des Moines, Iowa.

“We’ve also recently introduced a visual makeover of our brand identity that more accurately reflects the care, craftsmanship and people who build and stand behind our dry material samplers,” says Miller. “We’re an established company that builds durable samplers by hand, and that’s reflected in our new look, in the way we work with our customers and in the way our samplers perform.”

New Fracturing Sand Plant for Pattison Sand Company

Jacksonville, FL -- Outokumpu Technology has signed a contract with Pattison Sand Company LLC for the design and turnkey delivery of a new hydraulic fracturing sand plant to Clayton, Iowa, USA. The contract price was approximately EUR 14 million.

The turnkey project encompasses process development, engineering, equipment supply, complete erection, and commissioning. The project will be managed by Outokumpu Technology’s office in Jacksonville, Florida. It is estimated to be completed by March, 2007.

The plant will produce both fracturing sand and glass sand products utilizing primarily crushing and sizing equipment. The plant includes a wet process that will utilize Floatex® Density Separators to produce a crude product that will subsequently be dried and screened to produce a series of products as defined by the customer. Other Outokumpu Technology equipment includes a SUPAFLO® thickener for water reclamation. The entire process is designed to meet all America Petroleum Institute specifications.

Hydraulic fracturing sands, known as frac sands, consist almost entirely of quartz or silica sands and are used as proppants in oil and gas wells. A frac sand treatment is the forcing of a concoction of frac sands, viscous gel, and other chemicals down a well to prop open fractures in the subsurface rocks thus create a passageway for fluid from the reservoir to the well. Outokumpu Technology conducted a substantial amount of test work with the raw material and then designed an efficient flowsheet for processing the deposit.

This project is the second turnkey fracturing sand plant presently under construction by Outokumpu Technology. A hydraulic fracturing sand plant under construction in the South Western region of the United States is scheduled for completion in September 2006. For both projects, Outokumpu Technology has worked with the client from the early conception phase, through engineering, and to the final stages of implementation.

Outokumpu Technology is a worldwide technology leader in minerals and metals processing, providing innovative tailored solutions for a wide variety of customer needs in iron and steel, aluminum and non-ferrous metals industries. With a global network of sales and service centers, research facilities and 1800 experts the company generated annual sales of 556 million euro in 2005.

Powerful Size Reduction for Rubber Bales

Livingston, NJ -- The new Vulcanator® Model KM30 quickly reduces whole bales of natural and synthetic rubber to small bits with a unique low friction cutting design. This unit is invaluable in rubber processing as it vastly reduces rubber dissolving time, cuts processing time and thereby appreciably reduces costs.

The 150 HP Model KM30 is capable of processing larger and heavier bales up to six times faster than previous units. It features a larger throat and more powerful cutting than prior models. The split clam shell design allows for easy maintenance of cutters and screens. Because the Vulcanator’s unique design minimizes heat rise, it has no need for expensive cooling systems.

The Vulcanator is built for heavy duty operation. The housing is constructed of heavy steel with a high level of precision incorporated into every component. An auxiliary fly wheel helps this unit rip through even the toughest bales.

Optional features include: an automatic controller, and infeed and discharge conveying system, a pneumatic evacuation system and partitioning agent feed system.

Mr. Cutts needs help separating water and powder:

I'm looking for an appropriate technology to separate an air blown waste stream which contains sub 100 micron powder and water.

A 20% moisture product is passed through a piece of equipment which splits the water from the base material and reduces it to a fine powder.

I need to then remove the moisture from the air stream before it is re-absorbed into the powder. This is so that the powdered component of the stream can be reintroduced into a dry milling facility.

This needs to operate at up to 20 tph. (IE: 4 tph of moisture is stripped out)

Mr. Siccardi wants to know about dispensing TiO2:

Does anyone out there dispense TiO2 from an IBC into a screw type dispensing unit?

Since TiO2 was put on the "Possible Carcinogen" list last week, I'm thinking of purchasing it in a bulk container and dispensing the small quantities I need (20 -200 lbs at a time) in a more controlled and less dusty method than breaking open 50 pound bags.

I know TiO2 doesn't lend itself to bulk dispensing but hopefully someone has figured a way to do it as I feel this will become more common in the future.
