Olds Elevator makes industries safer from Dust

Hudson, NH -- There’s always room for improvement, or so the saying goes, and the people at Olds Elevator would agree. Olds Elevator LLC, located in Hudson, NH has, modernized the entire concept of bulk material elevation for materials such as grain, sugar, many powders and fertilizer. With their innovation, Olds Elevator stands to revolutionize not only the way vertical elevation systems are considered, but the company also proudly claims their product will make many industries much safer.

At the heart of the problem eventually solved with an Olds Elevator are “dust explosions”. A dust explosion is the catastrophic end result of the ignition of a dust cloud, created by the mixture of dust from materials and air, often within a bucket elevator.

As Olds Elevator spokesman Richard McIntosh explains, standard bucket elevators “are notorious for allowing the conditions for dust explosions to exist.” As for an Olds Elevator, McIntosh adds "Since Olds elevators convey material in fully-flooded mode there is nowhere for dust to form. No dust, no dust explosion."

There are three things required for a dust explosion—fuel, oxygen, and a spark. According to McIntosh, “In a typical bucket elevator, you have 2 of those all the time, fuel (which is the dust) and oxygen.” With a single spark caused by a foreign object or a bucket from the elevator falling off of its chain or belt, explosions can occur with catastrophic results.

Olds Elevator technology, a recent Australian invention, is a modernization of the screw conveyor concept developed by Archimedes over 2,000 years ago. Olds elevators operate by rotating a cylindrical casing around a static screw.

Intakes at the base of the rotating casing draw material into the elevator where it is gently elevated in fully-flooded mode within the enclosed casing. This results in “the same vertical elevation of material as a bucket elevator” without the inherent safety hazards.

McIntosh and Olds Elevator are proud to help industries and companies across the country with efficient, dust-free, bulk material elevation. However, they are even more excited for the opportunity to help make businesses safer—eliminating the injury and loss of life caused by dust explosions.

Located in Hudson, NH, Olds Elevator LLC provides engineering design, elevator manufacturing, installation and service for a variety of industries. They recently installed their first Olds Elevator for use in the Sugar Industry in America, dramatically increasing safety and setting an important industry milestone.

Free white paper : 10 ways to Control Rheology

Malvern, UK -- ‘10 ways to Control Rheology by changing Particle Properties’ is the latest addition to Malvern Instruments’ Inform series of white papers, which are designed to provide advice on material characterization issues.

Freely downloadable from the Malvern website, this new document guides the reader through some of the fundamental properties of dispersed systems and demonstrates how these affect its rheology. A variety of examples illustrates the effects on rheology of changing particle size, size distribution, shape and zeta potential, alone and in combination.

Many materials used today are disperse systems where one substance, often a particulate, is dispersed in another phase. Examples are common in areas as diverse as adhesives, agrochemicals, cement, ceramics, colloids, cosmetics and personal care formulations, food and drink, mining and mineral slurries, paints, inks and surface coatings, pharmaceuticals and polymer systems.

The physical properties of the dispersed particles – average particle size, size distribution, zeta potential or charge on the particles, and particle shape – all influence bulk material properties such as rheology. Therefore the rheology of a dispersed system can be controlled through the measurement and manipulation of key parameters.

Malvern Instruments provides a range of complementary materials characterization tools that deliver inter-related measurements reflecting the complexities of particulates and disperse systems, nanomaterials and macromolecules. Analytical instruments from Malvern are used in the characterization of a wide variety of materials, from industrial bulk powders to the latest nanomaterials and delicate macromolecules.

Dos Santos : From diamonds to gold in Mexico

Marietta, GA -- In cooperation with M3 Engineering of Tuscon, AZ, Dos Santos International LLC has been awarded a contract for an overland conveyor system at Goldcorp’s Los Filos Project. The Los Filos gold mining project is located in the Nukay mining district of central Guerrero State in southern Mexico, and promises to be one of the largest open-pit mines in the country.

Los Filos is a heap leach operation. The ore size is reduced at the crushing plant and then it is hauled to the valley where it is stacked on engineered pads. A chemical solution is sprayed onto the ore, which extracts and absorbs the gold as it trickles through the ore. To regulate seepage rate, an agglomerate (cement) is mixed into the ore for optimal ore exposure to the solution. Ultimately, the solution is directed to the plant where the gold is precipitated out.

A previous system conveyed the ore from the crushing plant to the leach pads via a glory hole ore pass and an underground conveyor, through the hill. An agglomeration drum mixed in the agglomerate before final delivery to the leach pads.

The conveying system experienced material flow problems right from the start, especially during heavy rains. The sticky ore tended to plug up the ore pass. Geological instability ultimately collapsed the ore pass, putting the transport system out of service only four months into its operation.

Against this background M3 Engineering was tasked with developing an alternate conveying route quickly since all haulage was now by truck and very expensive. The logical, most direct and economical path was over the same hill (rather than under). The path required a down-hill high angle conveyor. Thus, Dos Santos International was approached about their DSI Sandwich Belt High Angle Conveyor. Being the best solution, DSI was awarded the contract in March 2009 for a downhill system which they dubbed the DSI G.P.S. (Gently Pressed Sandwich) High Angle Conveyor.

Concerns with geological instability remained, especially along the path of the DSI G.P.S.. Further geological scrutiny led to abandoning this path altogether, thus abandoning the DSI G.P.S. as well.

M3 was again tasked with developing an alternate conveying path. This time a conventional conveyor system was developed, following the already developed truck ramps. Dos Santos International again submitted their proposal for the project, now an overland conveyor system. The project was awarded to DSI May 19, 2009. Engineering is now well underway.

The DSI expertise proved particularly advantageous on this project. The original ten-conveyor-flight system has been rationalized to only seven flights by amalgamating with horizontal curves. Additionally, the third conveyor flight is especially engineered to accomplish the agglomeration by mixing through five intermediate tripped transfers. The enroute agglomeration, conceived by Goldcorp, results in substantial savings by eliminating the need for the additional agglomerating drum.

The overland conveying path is predominantly downhill. While this presents the normal controlled starting and stopping problems, it also presents great savings opportunities. The downhill flights are decisively regenerative. Additionally, the drive motors, now generators, will feed back power into the grid which powers the other mine equipment. These carefully engineered conveyors will be equipped with variable frequency drives to ensure operations at maximum efficiency. This is another example of DSI’s commitment to “green” conveying.

In 2008, Dos Santos International installed 5 of their acclaimed DSI Snake Sandwich Belt Conveyors to convey kimberlite (diamonds) for the DeBeer’s company. Although there have been several other notable installations since these, this current project has prompted DSI to say they’ve gone from diamonds to gold.

Superior's new line of "Conveyor Take Ups"

Morris, MN -- Superior Industries, a leading manufacturer of conveyor systems and components, introduces a new line of conveyor take ups to help ensure and maintain proper belt tension at the drive pulley.

In addition to the recently released telescoping tube and wide slot versions, the expanded line now includes four new styles: top angle take ups, light duty take ups, heavy duty take ups and center pull conveyor take ups. The complete group of manual screw and fixed styles offer solutions for belt conveyors where automatic style take ups are not practical with the design.

Universal characteristics of a Superior conveyor take up include high-quality weld work and manufacturing, easy maintenance and designs that allow for mounting to most conveyor frames. The take ups are available throughout North America at an affiliated Superior conveyor components distributor.
