Dr. Acheson to deliver Keynote
at Pack Expo
Arlington,
VA -- Dr. David Acheson, Assistant Commissioner of Food
Protection at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA),
will be a keynote speaker at the Conference at Pack Expo,
running from October 15-17, 2007 at the Las Vegas Convention
Center. Dr. Acheson will deliver the conference’s closing
keynote address on Wednesday, October 17 at 10:10 a.m.
The three-day Conference at Pack Expo program will be held
in conjunction with Pack Expo Las Vegas 2007. Both events
are sponsored and produced by PMMI.
In his
presentation titled “Assuring Safety in the Global Food
Market: Our Shared Responsibilities,” Dr. Acheson will
highlight the challenges the FDA faces in ensuring that the
U.S.’s food supply continues to be among the safest in the
world. These include increases in the volume and complexity
of imported goods, growing international threats such as
terrorism and emerging foodborne diseases and the
significant increase during the past decade in consumption
of produce, particularly ready-to-eat products.
He
will describe how the FDA is focusing and renewing its food
safety efforts in three key areas: emphasizing the
importance of prevention, intervening through inspections
and testing to ensure prevention is working and to intercept
problems before they cause illness, and developing faster
responses. All three of these areas are dependent on
strengthening the scientific basis for FDA’s food safety
program, enhancing effective partnerships, and improving
risk-based targeting of inspection resources.
On May
1, 2007, Dr. Acheson assumed the position of FDA Assistant
Commissioner for Food Protection to provide advice and
counsel to the Commissioner on strategic and substantive
food safety and food defense matters. Dr. Acheson has
published extensively and is internationally recognized both
for his public health expertise in food safety and his
research in infectious diseases. Additionally, Dr. Acheson
is a fellow of both the Royal College of Physicians (London)
and the Infectious Disease Society of America.
“We
are honored to have someone of Dr. Acheson’s caliber
participate in the Conference at Pack Expo program,” says
Ben Miyares, vice president, Industry Relations for PMMI.
“Food safety has been a priority for industry and
government, especially in recent years. With today’s global
supply chains and increased automation in the manufacturing
process, strict controls in the processing, packaging,
transport and handling of a product are essential to ensure
safety.”
Joining Dr. Acheson as keynote speakers are Cal Dooley,
President and CEO of the Grocery Manufacturers/ Food
Products Association (GMA/FPA), and John A. Luke, Jr.,
Chairman and CEO of MeadWestvaco Corporation .
Mr.
Dooley will be the conference’s opening session keynote
speaker on Monday, October 15 at 10:10am with a presentation
entitled “Consumer Confidence: A Shared Objective of the
Consumer Packaged Goods Industry and Policymakers.”
On
Tuesday, October 16 at 10:10am, Mr. Luke will discuss the
growing importance of sustainability to the packaging
industry, its customers and consumers. His presentation will
be titled “ Coming Full-Circle: Sustainability throughout
the Packaging Lifecycle.”

Triangle Park, NC -- The WBF 2008 North American Conference
Call for Papers has been released, with an abstract
submittal deadline of October 12, 2007. Papers may include
case studies, current and evolving manufacturing methods and
technologies, and implementation of industry standards
including ISA-88, ISA-95, ISA-99, B2MML, and Make2Pack. The
conference will take place in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania,
March 24 - 27, 2008.
The
conference, with its theme of "Shaping the Future of
Manufacturing," will give attendees a greater understanding
of current and upcoming manufacturing management,
integration, and control methods and technologies. Keynote
speakers, panels, discussion forums, and individual
presentations will focus on a wide range of automation
topics and case studies from batch and continuous industrial
applications. In addition, WBF's collaborative activities
with ISA, OMAC, and MESA will provide a broad and balanced
view of the world of manufacturing innovation.
The
conference is designed to help attendees learn from
presentations and tutorials, given by individuals who have
actually utilized the technology that they're discussing.
WBF is soliciting papers consistent with the conference
theme and the organization's dedication to providing first
hand accounts of technology implementations, optimizations
and process improvements.

Conveyor Belt with Anti-stick
Coating
Montvale,
NJ -- Having to clean the belts frequently can result in
their premature wear, with unnecessary expenditures incurred
for repair and replacement parts.
The
Conti Clean A-H conveyor belt with anti-stick coating helps
minimize these problems. It employs a novel plastic coating
material that greatly enhances belt performances. Polymers
or additives have repeatedly demonstrated that they are
poorly suited to rendering rubber materials dirt repellent.
In a special process we have now succeeded in surface
treating the cover.
Conveyor belts equipped with this cover layer not only repel
dirt and guard against caking, thereby helping to reduce
costs for cleaning and servicing. They are also resistant to
oil and grease, as well as aging and atmospheric influences.
And they are anti-electrostatic.
What's more, ContiTech engineers have also succeeded in
extending the service of the belts by further reducing
scraper-induced cover wear.
The
conveyor belt are available in a width range of between 600
and 2000 millimeters and are suitable for transporting
materials of all kinds.

New Haver Bag Airflow Tester
Conyers,
GA -- Which packing machine is best suited for the
customer’s product? How can a satisfactory bag filling
speed be reached? How does one attain the optimum
interaction between packing machine, packaging and
product?
These are questions the
experts at the Haver & Boecker Research & Development
Center work on every day. An extensive study of the
product to be filled and its properties, as well as the
bag type to be used, are the basics you need for making
the right machine selection to assure customer
satisfaction.
To ease often repeated work
processes and studies, Haver & Boecker has developed
various test instruments that the customer can also use
for quality control in his own quality laboratories.
One of these test instruments
is the Haver Airflow Tester, which makes it possible to
determine the air escape capabilities of an entire bag.
The results of a bag’s air escape capability allows
conclusions to be drawn on bag filling behavior and
machine filling speeds. This information allows
customers to make a preliminary selection from the large
range of available bags without having to undergo time
consuming and costly filling, palletizing and storage
trials.
To cover the wide range of
bag valve widths, the Haver Airflow Tester has five
different filling tubes available. By using an
inflatable rubber sleeve, the bag valve is closed off
tightly. Next the bag is pneumatically filled with a
defined over-pressure of 50 mbar. The escaping
volumetric flowrate [m³/hr] can be then quickly and
easily determined. This is how bags with all types of
paper and plastic layers and glued strips undergo
testing.
The Haver Airflow Tester is
indeed a valuable aid in selecting the right packaging
for packing bulk powder-type products for customers.

Experienced LIW Feeder Reps Needed
Do you know
where the feeders are? Melfi Technologies is looking
to expand our outside sales representative network. Our
Allen-Bradley PLC system will directly retrofit any of the
proprietary LIW controllers offered by the popular feeder
manufacturers. If you have a well-developed database of
gravimetric feeder users then we need to talk.
We have multiple
open territories available for North America and are looking
for reps that understand and know the feeder industry well.
Controls experience would be helpful but is not necessarily
required. Recent ex-reps of the mainstream feeder
manufacturers are especially encouraged to apply.
Please send an
email with requested territory and line list to:

Vacuums on Steroids : Cement Applications
In an industry that has its
roots in ancient Roman times, and turns mountains into
dust with rugged equipment that pounds, crushes, and
grinds, a vacuum cleaner seems almost unnatural—a little
domestic. However, with recent supply shortages and
tighter EPA and OSHA regulations, Portland cement
manufacturers are finding vacuum cleaners to be the
ideal solution to reclaim product and comply with health
