Bottom-up Filling Makes for a "Dust-Free" Bagging Environment
------------------------------------------------------------
Chronos Richardson (Hennef, Germany) presents a new generation
of almost dust-free powder bagging.
Pollution from packaging machines and production areas causes
unwelcome and annoying side-effects when handling floury and
powdery bulk materials. Chronos Richardson has successfully
created an almost dust-free bagging procedure, Bottom-up Filling.
In conventional baggers the bag is kept stationary during
the filling procedure, Chronos' Bottom-up Filling lowers the
bag synchronous to its filling level.
A vertical screw is used for bag filling which is equipped
with a dosing cone. By synchronizing both functions filling
and lowering the distance between dosing cone and material
level is reduced to a minimum thus reducing dust levels.
The novelty is the valve cone method of the dosing screw which
is also used for micro dosing. A patent was filed in June 1998
this device and is Chronos Richardson's contribution to the
development of bagging accuracy and hygiene of bulk materials.
How It Works:
After the bag is placed and the bag spout is in the upper
position, the dosing cone opens. Simultaneously the vertical
screw starts in high speed to fill in full flow. As soon as
the switch-over point for dribble flow is reached, the screw
speed is reduced and the outlet cross section decreased by
lifting the cone closure. During full and dribble regulation
the bag is lowered depending on its filling level.
The vertical screw stops upon termination of fine dosing,
the cone closure is lifted until only a ring slot is open.
Now the micro dosing starts by turning the cone closure
(equipped with discharge paddles) until the set weight is
reached. The load cell measuring signal is transmitted to
the weighing electronic SPEEDAC which controls and checks
the dosing and filling procedure until the set weight is
reached. Then the cone closure goes up and closes the outlet
of the screw pipe.
The bag leaves the screw pipe area to be stretched at the
bag spout and then taken over by the transfer unit.
With this system, all kinds of open-mouth bags can be used
for filling, including those made of paper, PE and PP or
other materials. Fill weights range from 10 30 kg per bag.
During the entire bagging process the bag is constantly
guided from the filling position until bag closure and
kept in closed condition. Therefore, there is no dependency
on absolutely stable bags and no danger of product
contamination.
Options include nitrogen purging and empty bag marking.
Bagging output, the PBS 1200 (single spout line) with
floor filling weigher is designed for up to 270 bags per
hour; the PBS 2000 (double spout line) is designed for up
to 500 bags per hour.
Applications include human food and chemical industry for
floury and powdery bulk materials, e.g. milk powder, baby
food, phosphates or insecticides

Spark Detection and Extinguishment System Protects People
------------------------------------------------------------
Production machines, dryers, mills, and sanders are all sources
of sparks which can cause fires and explosions in dust
collection systems. For over 20 years GreCons Spark Detection
and Extinguishment System has successfully protected against
such dangers by automatically detecting and extinguishing
sparks in pneumatic conveying systems.
How It Works
The GreCon Spark Detection and Extinguishment Systems sensors
contain photo elements which detects a sparks infrared radiation.
The smallest spark triggers the sensing element and the system
immediately releases a fine mist of water downstream, extinguishing
the spark without interrupting production.
For high temperature applications, up to 1830ºF, fiber optic
cables and sensors are utilized.
This protection greatly reduces the risk of injury to personnel,
damage to equipment, and downtime caused by a fire or explosion.
The System is Factory Mutual Approved and can also favorably
affect insurance premiums.
Features include:
-Detects and extinguishes sparks instantaneously.
-Unparalleled detector sensitivity.
-Water extinguishing does not adversely affect the filter media.
-2,500 recallable event memory.
-RS485 serial port for connection to a computer or event printer.
-Automatic test functions.
-Programmable functions: i.e., abort, machinery shutdown or deluge.

Enclosure Strength Design For Explosion Venting
------------------------------------------------------------
Gary Chubb of Chubb Engineering, Parsons, Kansas sent us a
note about a paper he will be presenting at the Atlantic Food
Development and Processing Exhibition being held in Baltimore,
August 10 through 12.
Gary writes, "I will be presenting a session titled Enclosure
Strength Design For Explosion Venting per NFPA 68. I am
attaching a copy of the Abstract, which could be used as an
article in your Powder and Bulk Dot Com Newsletter. I hope
you can use this information.
Thanks for your good work on the web site. I usually try to
'check in' with it each morning, and I always tell others
about this service. -Gary Chubb"
Here is the Abstract of Gary's paper:
"The new edition of NFPA 68 offers revised criteria for
resistance of the internal pressure developed during explosion
venting. A new term, Pes, is introduced, defined as: The
maximum pressure that can be withstood by the weakest structural
element of the vented enclosure which is designated not to fail.
The new edition of NFPA 68 also offers two levels of protection
for the vented enclosure; a design which allows for deformation
but not rupture, and a design which allows for no deformation.
The enclosure strength formulas presented in NFPA 68 are
dependent on strength values and formulas from ASME Boiler and
Pressure Vessel Code. While this design standard is useful for
pressure containing cylindrical and spherical vessels, is does
not extend to the design of shallow cones or flat plates.
Many enclosures requiring explosion venting are constructed
with shallow cone roofs, discharge hoppers with included angles
greater than 600, wedge shaped hoppers, and other flat plate
construction. These would include storage tanks with 100 roofs
and hoppers less than 600, square bins, buildings, cyclones,
rectangular bag house dust collectors, high strength buildings
and other similarly shaped enclosures.
This technical paper presents the derivation of the strength
formulas introduced in NFPA 68 and provides simplified strength
calculations that can be used on non-ASME designed enclosures.
Design examples will be included which compare the two design
approaches and validate the simplified method of calculating
enclosure strength."
Thanks for the 'plug', Gary and we wish you the best at the show
next week.
Gary's company, Chubb Engineering provides design services to
the bulk storage industry: storage tank & silo design, inspection
services, structural steel support designs, enclosure strength
design and evaluation of explosion venting. Those of you who
