Greenbank
Signs Agreement with Bridgestone
Woodville,
UK -- The Greenbank Group UK Ltd is proud to announce that
it has signed a Technical Collaboration Agreement with
Bridgestone Corporation, Tokyo in relation to the design and
supply of pipe conveyor systems for the materials handling
industry.
The agreement will see
Bridgestone provide Greenbank’s Materials Handling division
with technical services for Greenbank Pipe Conveyor
solutions which incorporate Bridgestone’s world-class belt
design.
Pipe conveyors provide
considerable environmental and economic advantages over
traditional bulk material transport methods. By using an
enclosed belt system, pipe conveyors minimize dust
generation, protect from contamination, and prevent
spillages whilst also accommodating steeper inclines and
requiring much less floor space than a conventional belt
design.
Commenting on the agreement,
Charles Conroy, Greenbank’s Managing Director said, “Having
pioneered the pipe conveyor, Bridgestone’s technical
knowledge and operational experience in this field is second
to none. This agreement gives Greenbank access to an
unrivalled level of technical expertise which will
undoubtedly help further enhance our pipe conveyor
portfolio.”
Mr. Nakaegawa, General Manager,
Conveyor Belts Sales and Marketing said, “The Bridgestone
Corporation is committed to working with companies that
deliver exceptional products and services for the materials
handling industry and the Greenbank Group has an excellent
reputation in this field. We are very much looking forward
to providing our technical services as they design and
deploy pipe conveyor systems which use Bridgestone belt
technology.”
Greenbank Materials Handling
offer a full range of belt materials to suit most bulk
handling products and a design and installation service that
delivers cost effective, innovative solutions for complex
transportation problems.
The agreement was marked with a
Formula 1-style podium celebration, complete with champagne,
at Greenbank’s Woodville headquarters.

Dust Control & Antioxidant
Solution for Coal Handling
Trevose,
PA -- A solution designed to significantly reduce dusting
and oxidation at utilities, terminals, mines and in-transit
now is available from GE. The CoalPlus portfolio of dust
control binders and antioxidants enhances coal quality,
reduces dust emissions and minimizes spontaneous combustion,
addressing operator safety and environmental compliance, two
of the main challenges faced by utilities.
GE’s technology can reduce
dusting by up to 90 percent during loading, unloading,
stack-out and reclamation at utilities and coal terminals
and significantly decreases in-transit coal losses from rail
cars. It is specially designed for low-rank coals, such as
those from the Powder River Basin (PRB) region in the United
States, which supplies approximately 40 percent of all coal
in the country.
CoalPlus technology retards
the oxidation and weathering of low rank coals, which in
turn reduces hot spots, smokers and spontaneous combustion
at generating stations, coal terminals and mines. In
addition, less weathering reduces BTU losses during outside
storage at coal yards and terminals.
In a statement from Cloud
Peak Energy Resources LLC, the company said: We have been
actively pursuing the export market for PRB coal since 2008.
One of the key challenges associated with exporting PRB coal
is controlling the temperature of the coal stockpiled at
export terminals. Over the past 18 months, Cloud Peak Energy
has worked with GE and a terminal operator to develop a
product that reduces the tendency for coal to develop
localized hot spots. As a result of this co-operation, a GE
product is now successfully used to treat all coal destined
for Cloud Peak Energy’s export markets.
Antioxidants and dust control
products in GE’s CoalPlus treatment program are not coating
agents but are especially designed synthetic materials that
inhibit the oxidation reaction. As opposed to traditional
crusting and coating agents, the dosage rates of CoalPlus
treatments on a per ton basis tend to be 40 to 100 times
less than the traditional alternatives, leading to
significant savings in applied chemicals, transportation and
logistics costs and ultimately a lower environmental impact
during the transportation and handling phase of the coal
utilization cycle.
GE’s engineering team, in
partnership with the utility, can audit the coal supply
chain from the mine to the generating unit, identify
specific problems and design a custom CoalPlus program to
address specific issues.
“Safety and environmental
concerns are paramount when transporting and storing coal,
especially Powder River Basin coal, which is dustier and has
an increased chance of oxidation. CoalPlus is revolutionary
because it allows for higher quality of coal while
diminishing spontaneous combustion,” said Ava-Drayton Elder,
senior product line director—water and process technologies
for GE Power & Water.

Malvern Instruments Extends
Direct Operations in Japan
Malvern,
UK -- Malvern Instruments is extending its direct operations
in Japan and has concluded an agreement with Sysmex
Corporation, the current distributor of its laboratory-based
particle characterization systems, to transfer
responsibility for sales and support to Malvern Instruments
Japan. Malvern Instruments Japan, which is based in Kobe,
was established in February 2003 to manage Malvern’s process
business in the region. From 1st October 2010 an expanded
organization will provide sales, technical and applications
support across the entire range of Malvern’s particle
characterization systems.
Malvern Instruments and Sysmex
Corporation have enjoyed a long and successful association
in Japan, where Sysmex has been Malvern’s exclusive
distributor for the company’s particle characterization
systems since 1998.
“I’d like to pay tribute and
extend my sincere thanks to the whole team at Sysmex, who
have provided incredibly loyal support to Malvern and our
products for more than a decade,” said Paul Walker, Managing
Director of Malvern Instruments. “In recent years our
business has grown substantially and our product and
technology portfolios have undergone considerable
diversification. As the market in Japan continues to mature,
it makes sound business sense for us to further extend our
direct operation and to manage our particle characterization
business through a single organization, as we do elsewhere.”
Hisashi Ietsugu, President and
CEO of Sysmex Corporation, is looking forward to a
continuing collaboration with Malvern in the bioscience
arena. “Sysmex and Malvern have enjoyed more than ten years
of fruitful business collaboration, a period in which there
have been considerable developments in the market,” he said.
“Following a recent strategic review, we decided it was in
the best interests of both companies to transfer the
industrial sales and support activities to Malvern. I am
very pleased, however, that we will continue our partnership
in developing particle characterization instruments for the
bio-science community, a very exciting area for future
development.”

Ms. Bharat needs help with HDPE
conveying system:
I am a trainee engineer at a
plastics manufacturing company. I have decided to specialize
in the plastic department and I am currently in the process
of developing a business plan for a small scale blow molding
business.
On the technical side, I am
hopeful that you would be able to advice me on automating
the material handling process of such a plant. My main
product would be a juice bottle made from Food Grade High
Density Polyethylene, (HDPE). I would like to include a
regrinder, a deduster, a blender and a blow mold machine.
If you would be able to
assist me with the conveying technique between these
components, this would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Carlotta Bharat

Addressing Common Airlock Issues
Guest article by Cem Brinckley
Rotary Airlock, LLC
Though
seemingly a small item in the overall picture, an
airlock’s failure could result in something as subtle
(but still costly) as a loss of efficiency – or the
complete shutdown of a production line. It is important,
then, to make sure the airlocks are properly functioning
and maintained to bring maximum efficiency and run-time
to the manufacturing process... (Click
