Sandvik Awarded Major Materials-Handling Contract

Sandviken, Sweden -- Sandvik Mining and Construction has received an order for materials-handling system from Alstom, a global company for infrastructure in energy and transport.

The order, valued at about SEK 400 M, comprises a turnkey lignite and limestone handling system at the Maritza East 1 power station southeast of Sofia, Bulgaria.

The advanced system has a capacity exceeding 32,000 tons per day. The Sandvik delivery will include a train unloading station, stacker/reclaimers, belt conveyors, crushers and a limestone handling system. The coal-fired power plant is scheduled to start operations in 2009.

Earlier this year, Sandvik completed the delivery of a materials-handling system for coal and iron ore for the port of Burgas in Bulgaria. The Maritza East 1 project is strategically important for Sandvik in establishing close cooperation pending Alstom’s continued expansion plans in the power sector.

“In 2006 we have received orders exceeding SEK 1,000 M for handling systems for coal-fired power stations. Sandvik with its comprehensive knowledge in mining, handling and preparation of coal is well placed to capture the future opportunities,” says Lars Josefsson, President of Sandvik Mining and Construction.

QComp Introduces New Robotic Palletizing Cell

Greenville, WI -- QComp Technologies, Inc., has introduced the new 260 Lean Palletizing System designed specifically for palletizing at end-of-line applications. The rugged lean cell offers unprecedented flexibility with its highly portable design, allowing manufacturers quick changeover, low maintenance and 24/7 operation.

"Our new robotic palletizer system has a modular design that allows flexibility, high throughput and simple, reliable operation," says Tom Doyle, president of QComp Technologies, Inc. "Using a decentralized concept, our customers can palletize closer to the point of production, eliminating long conveyor runs. Adding our AGV to the system for transporting the full pallet to a stretch wrapper eliminates costly pallet conveyors."

Utilizing a four-axis ABB-IRB 260 robot, the lean cell system can pick and place up to 15 cases per minute, with a case weight of up to 45 pounds (20 kilograms). With straight-through or over/under layout, the system can use either manual forklifts or automated guided vehicles (AGVs) for empty and full-pallet handling. An optional pallet dispenser and slip-sheet dispenser are available.

AGV integration allows automated handling from point of production to stretch wrapper. By adding an AGV to the cell, manufacturers can eliminate the use of pallet conveyors, reduce labor costs, increase plant floor safety, and eliminate product and conveyor damage caused by human error.

The advanced system comes equipped with a Rockwell MicroLogix 1500 PLC, while employing ABB's "Pickmaster 5" software for flexibility and reliability. This enhanced package makes the integration of picking, packing and palletizing easy via an intuitive graphical interface, which optimizes production while handling any packing and palletizing pattern.

The 10- by 10-foot (3- by 3-meter) palletizing cell, which is preassembled for quick start-up, features a 36-inch (91 centimeter) scissors lift for maximum pallet height and can handle pallet heights of up to 86 inches (218 centimeters

Founded in 1991, QComp Technologies, Inc. is an ABB robotics integrator, providing automation solutions for a variety of industries. The company designs and builds automated robotic manufacturing cells, automatic guided vehicles and materials handling systems, as well as engineers and manufactures drive systems for paper, metal and converting industries.

Russell Finex's Blow Thru Sieve

Pineville, NC -- To raise production and ensure that incoming ingredients and outgoing products are contamination-free, Russell Finex, a leader in sieving, screening, and filtration equipment, announces its Blow Thru Sieve(tm) for use in pneumatic conveying lines.

Because the Blow Thru Sieve enables processors to screen and transport material simultaneously and removes oversize contamination from powders during dilute phase pneumatic conveying, it improves production and product quality while safeguarding reputation. It is perfect for screening powders from delivery tankers before storage, before filling tankers at dispatch, and anywhere powders are pneumatically conveyed.

By combining material screening and transport, the sieve eliminates double handling, thus increasing efficiency. Since product is conveyed under pressure into the sieve through a tangential inlet, this ensures that high throughput rates can be achieved with minimal pressure losses. Good product is allowed to pass through the vibrating mesh screen while oversize material remains on top where it can be removed at the end of a batch.

Its unique design enables processors to screen material as they load or unload tankers, trucks or silos without slowing the process -- for expedited throughputs up to 60,000 lbs. per hour as recorded in on-site customer trials.

As the Blow Thru Sieve conforms to European Pressure Equipment Directive 97/23/EC, it is certified for use up to a maximum pressure of 2 bar in Europe, and is suitable for use up to 1 bar pressure (14.5 psi) in North America. This makes the unit ideal for any bulk powder application where quality and efficiency are important.

The unit is designed to minimize downtime and maximize production. Since the unit assembles and disassembles using a single tool, for instance, this allows quick, simple cleaning between batches. As the unit is mounted on a mobile stand, it can be used at multiple on-site locations, giving manufacturers total installation flexibility.

In addition, Russell Finex has designed the unit to be operator-friendly with an easily accessible inlet/outlet and operator safeguards. Once opened, the lid is secured in the open position by a positive lock-off system, which frees the operator's hands for any cleaning or maintenance and prevents the lid from accidentally closing. To reduce excessive lifting, the lid hinge is spring assisted.

The Blow Thru Sieve is available with FDA-approved materials and surface finishes for food applications, and a variety of connections are available for complete compatibility with existing processes and equipment.
