New Sponsor : Stedman Machine Company

Jacksonville Beach, FL -- We are pleased to announce that Stedman Machine has become a sponsor of Powder and Bulk Dot Com.

In 1834 Nathan Stedman started Stedman with a unique method of reducing material size through what has become known today as the cage mill. Since then, providing the primary solution for companies on how to reduce material size has become second nature to them.

Today, Stedman continues to focus exclusively on particle size reduction and work closely with their customers to determine the best, most cost-effective, efficient size reduction method and crusher equipment for specific applications.  No matter what the material, Stedman offers the equipment choices to crush, pulverize, fine grind, blend and/or delump the toughest materials.

Over the years, Stedman's growth found the machinery division's product line expanded to include crushing, pulverizing, disintegrating, mixing and screening equipment for the fertilizer, chemical, meat packing, crushed stone, sand and gravel, glass, precious metals, clay processing, reclaim, recycle and wood industries.

Products include; Aurora Rotor Crushers, Grand-Slam , Mega-Slam and V-Slam Impactors, Cage Mills, Chain Mills, Hammer Mills, Wood Hogs, and Lump Breakers. In conjunction with their sister company, Innovative Processing Solutions, Stedman can now offer turnkey systems and complete installation packages. For size reduction applications from 30 inches to less than 5 microns, Stedman has the equipment your size-reduction application.

PMMI : US Packaging Industry Continues Global Dominance

Arlington, VA -- With more than $5.930 billion in turnover, and a national consumption of $6.765 billion in machinery sales in 2003, the United States continued its overwhelmingly dominant position as the leading packaging machinery marketplace. Members of the Packaging Machinery Manufacturers Institute (PMMI) control 75% of the U.S. marketplace and 25% of the global marketplace.

“PMMI member companies are the leading players throughout the global marketplace for packaging machinery,” notes Charles D. Yuska, PMMI president. “Despite reports from respective countries on their growth in exports and industry leadership, the fact that the U.S. has stood in the top positions, regardless of how you account for machinery sales, is a clear and decisive indicator of market support.”

Germany lags significantly behind U.S. based original equipment manufacturers in terms of national consumption with only $1.6 billion in packaging machinery sales sold within that country’s borders. Both China ($3.984 billion) and Japan ($3.221 billion) continued their trend of serving their respective marketplaces internally.

The top five countries, ranked in order of packaging machinery sales, are as follows:

United States: $5.930 billion
Germany: $4.584 billion
Japan: $3.339 billion
Italy: $3.277 billion
China: $2.699 billion

The top five countries, ranked in order of national consumption of packaging machinery, are as follows:

United States: $6.765 billion
China: $3.984 billion
Japan: $3.221 billion
Germany: $1.697 billion
Spain: $1.012 billion

The Packaging Machinery Manufacturers Institute (PMMI) is a non-profit trade association whose 500+ members manufacture packaging and packaging-related converting machinery in the United States and Canada.

New : Double-Deck Fluid Bed Dryer/Cooler

MILLBURN, NJ -- A new Double-Deck, Circular Vibratory Fluid Bed Processor from Kason Corporation significantly reduces capital cost, energy usage and floor space per pound of product being dried or cooled according to Lawrence Stone, CEO.

“The addition of an upper deck makes use of heated or cooled air that would otherwise be exhausted after passing through the lower deck, and requires little to no increase in the size or energy consumption of imbalanced-weight motors or blower fans, nearly doubling capacity and efficiency with little to no increase in operating cost or floor space,” says Stone.

Unlike rectangular fluid bed processors that require heavy-gauge construction to withstand constant vibration, circular fluid bed processors are inherently rigid, allowing materials of construction to be down-gauged and vibratory motors to be downsized. Associated components are also eliminated, such as multiple air inlets and outlets and their associated ductingѕ the circular unit requiring only one of each. The result, claims Stone, is a unit of significantly lighter weight and higher operating efficiency, with lower capital cost and a smaller footprint, than rectangular fluid bed processors of equivalent bed area and capacity.

Reductions in material, weld seams, and associated labor are said to decrease fabrication cost, particularly when units are finished to FDA, USDA, BISSC or 3-A standards.

With reduced weld seams, a quick-disconnect housing, and no internal cross-members, circular fluid bed processors reportedly cut cleaning time dramatically.

Four models of the patent pending, double-deck fluid bed processor range in diameter from 48” to 84” (1220mm to 2135mm), satisfying medium- to high-volume production requirements. All are available configured for continuous drying, cooling or moisturizing applications.

Other bulk processing equipment manufactured by the company includes circular vibratory screeners, centrifugal screeners, bag dump screeners, static sieves, agglomerators and powder coaters.

People post their requests for help and offer their suggestions to others in our open forum.

Mr. Baker needs help with mixing plant design:

I am currently working my final year design project in college which is to design a tableting plant for ibuprofen and it is my responsibility to design the initial mixing stage.

All of the ingredients are to be powders with each batch containing 200kg of ibuprofen (particle size 200 mum), 30 kg of Sodium Bicarbonate (particle size 150mum) 30kg of Croscarmellose Sodium (particle size 200mum) and 140kg Microcrystalline Cellulose (particle size 95mum).

I am thinking of using a 2000L tumbler IBC as my mixer. However I am unsure of determining a suitable mixing time or mixing speeds. Does anyone have any ideas?  (Click here to post a reply)

Mr. Galil needs help calculating silo wall stresses:

I would like to calculate the stresses on a PTA silo walls. I could not find the friction coefficient between the powder and the silo steel walls and the internal friction coefficient of the powder.

Has any one seen a case of PTA steel silo buckling?

Spray Drying : USDA/FDA Compliant K-Valve Airlock
for Formula

Nestle USA's, manufacturing plant in Eau Claire, WI uses a tall-form spray dryer for the production of its infant formula. On the four outlet cyclones where the powder is recovered from the hot gas stream, Nestle was using flap-gate airlock valves. These basic valves provided a very poor seal so vacuum was hard to maintain. The airlock was also difficult to clean and maintain. Metal on metal contact points of the flap gate was also a concern in this high purity environment......(more)
