ThyssenKrupp Continuous Barge Unloader
Essen,
Germany -- In October 2007 ThyssenKrupp Foerdertechnik,
Business Unit Materials Handling, Germany received a
contract for design, construction and delivery of a
continuous barge unloader (CBU). The order was placed by
PLOR on behalf of PT Indominco Mandiri (now PT Indo
Tambangraya Megah) Alliance, a member of the Banpu
(Thailand) group of companies for the Bontang Coal Terminal
Expansion.
The CBU will be designed for a
nominal maximum unloading rate of 4100 t/h of coal from
barges ranging from 7,000 to 10,000 tons. The CBU will be of
heavy duty design and construction to operate for a
continuous period of 18 hours per day and an annual period
of 330 days. The CBU has to unload approx. 12 Million tons
of coal per year and has to be designed for a service life
of 20 years.
The machine consists of a rigid
supporting frame construction on wheels, which is able to
travel along the length of the barge. Reclaiming is done by
a double strand bucket elevator, hinged onto a traversing
bridge. While reclaiming in the longitudinal direction of
the barge, the bucket elevators can traverse from the one
side of the barge’s hold to the other. From the bucket
elevators the coal is transferred to the portal belt
conveyor, which in turn feeds it to the pier conveyor.
Control of the traversing bridge
is done from the operator’s cabin or from the pier by remote
control. Digging depth, speed of the reclaimer and /or
traversing is controlled automatically to achieve the
required capacity. The reclaimer has a semi-automatic mode
to enable manual positioning and/or operating of the
reclaimer.
ThyssenKrupp Foerdertechnik’s
previous references for continuous barge unloaders and their
excellent track record were deciding factors in the contract
being awarded to TKF. This continuous barge unloader is
another first for TKF in Indonesia, although TKF has already
supplied more than 50 continuous ship unloaders, working on
the same unloading principle of continuous bucket elevator
worldwide.

Malvern & Rutgers collaborate on
CCR Lab
Malvern,
UK -- A new particle characterization and rheology
laboratory is being installed at the Center for Ceramic
Research (CCR) at Rutgers (State University of New Jersey),
as part of a collaborative project between the university
and Malvern Instruments.
Malvern is providing a suite of state-of-the-art
instrumentation that will be used by researchers from the
CCR, other university departments and partnership
universities (Penn State and New Mexico) to continue the
exploration of the links between rheology and particle
characteristics. The new facility will be managed by
Professor Richard Haber, director of the CCR.
“Properties such as particle size, size distribution and
zeta potential often directly influence rheological
behavior,” said Professor Haber. “Malvern recognizes this
and, uniquely, has in-house expertise and instrumentation in
both fields. They are an excellent partner for our work. We
look forward to using these new tools to push forward
understanding in this industrially important area.”
The
500 square foot laboratory will contain rotational and
capillary rheometers - the Gemini and RH 2000 respectively.
These will be complemented by a Zetasizer Nano S for
nanoparticle characterization, and a Mastersizer 2000 for
laser diffraction-based particle size measurement in the
range 0.02–2000 microns. All of these state-of-the art
instruments are manufactured by Malvern Instruments.
“Both
rheology and particle characterization are core to Malvern’s
materials characterization business, so we are delighted to
be collaborating with Professor Haber and the CCR,” said
Fred Mazzeo, Americas Product Manager – Rheometry, Malvern
Instruments. “We know that the world-class researchers at
Rutgers will make great use of our systems and we look
forward to seeing the results. There is enormous interest in
exploring the links between particle properties and
rheology, and the outcome of this research will have
widespread application.”
Malvern Instruments provides a range of complementary
materials characterization tools that deliver inter-related
measurements reflecting the complexities of particulates and
disperse systems, nanomaterials and macromolecules.

Gemco launches Valve
Rebuild/Recycle Program
Middlesex
NJ -- Gemco Valve Company, the leader in design and
manufacture of solid process valves for the powder bulk
solids industries, announces a program to rebuild or recycle
used valves.
Jim Lenihan, General Manager of
Gemco Valve says, "This is a great way for maintenance and
plant managers to control their budgets, improve production
performance and help the environment."
Companies can send their valves
to Gemco for evaluation. Following an inspection the options
are discussed with the customer.
Typical options include:
-Replacing soft parts – gaskets, O-rings, seats etc.
-Replacing damaged parts – shafts, bearings, fasteners etc.
-Rebuilding and machining the shut-off disc sealing radius.
-Repairing or replacing actuation package.
-Upgrading key components for better performance and longer
life.
The rebuilt valves are fully
tested and carry Gemco’s standard warranty.
Unusable components are recycled
in an environmentally responsible manner and typically the
scrap value covers any cost involved with the recycling.

Paul wants to know if a
butterfly valve will do the job:
I have given up looking for
an iris valve or a pinch valve that can with stand our
sanitization temperature of 170C. I am thinking of going
with a Kemutec Mucon SS Butterfly Valve (150mm).
I have been told the response time to fully open from a shut
position is under 0.2 seconds. Preliminary tests have been
done on how free flowing the powder is. Accuracy is
paramount of importance. Needs to be with in 100g +/-.
I'm not sure this will work because its predicting when the
weight should be 25kg through the speed of the valve closing
and the rate of flow, I want to get away from predicting and
get a real figure.

Mr. Widjaja needs help with an
air cyclone:
I have cyclone for powder
separator with the following size:
-Body diameter : 380 mm
-Body height : 570 mm
-Cone height : 950 mm
-Cone outlet dia: 140 mm
-Inlet diameter : 190 mm
-Outlet diameter : 190 mm
Air system is 600 m3/hr velocity of 30m/s (centrifugal
blower), Pstatic 3200 Pa, 2900 rpm, 2.2 kW.
The problem is the size of particles is mesh 60 and the
capacity only 1kg/hr. If we need mesh 80 and 10kg/hr, what
is your advice?
