BinMaster 3DLevelScanner for Harsh Environments

Lincoln, NE -- BinMaster Level Controls announces the introduction of the 3DLevelScanner HE designed for use in storage silos containing challenging materials such as clinker, alumina, and fly ash. This new model of the 3DLevelScanner has an operating temperature range of up to 250°F (120°C) to accommodate higher temperatures that may be present when material that has been heated in the production process is conveyed into storage silos. 

The 3DLevelScanner HE is ideal for use in the cement, aluminum and power industries where there are multiple challenges such as dust or high humidity and very large silos where the material surface in the bin may be uneven and difficult to measure.

Dependent on the diameter and height of the silo and the desired level of volume accuracy, one or more 3DLevelScanners is mounted on the top of the silo in strategic locations determined by using advanced proprietary software. Each dust-penetrating, non-contact sensor sends pulses in a 70° beam angle, taking multiple measurements from the material surface and continually mapping the material surface to detect changes in level, account for uneven surface topography, and calculate a highly accurate volume estimate for the contents of the silo. 

The 3DLevelManager software reports the lowest and highest points detected and the average level based upon a weighted average of all of the measurements detected in the bin. For the MV and the MVL models, a colorful graphical representation will indicate where high and low spots exist in the silo.

“In the manufacturing process, materials such as clinker, alumina or fly ash may be conveyed into the silo when they are still relatively hot,” said Todd Peterson, vice president of sales for BinMaster. 

“The new 3DLevelScanner HE withstands these higher temperatures while maintaining a high level of measurement accuracy, unlike some non-contact devices that are prone to becoming unreliable in harsh environments. With our experience in over 500 installations in North America, the 3DLevelScanner has been proven to perform in a wide variety of materials like heavy lump material like clinker, fine granular material like alumina oxide, or powdered materials such as fly ash.” 




UCC Launches Viper Mill for DSI Systems

Waukegan, IL -- United Conveyor Corporation (UCC) recently introduced VIPER™ Mill technology, which significantly reduces operating cost and improves emissions control of dry sorbent injection (DSI) systems. A proven, reliable patent-pending technology, the VIPER Mill reduces sorbent particle size for better removal of SO2, SO3 and HCl. Featuring the highest mill throughput in the industry, the VIPER Mill is capable of processing up to 7 tons per hour of sorbent on a 24/7 basis. It utilizes an in-line milling process eliminating the need for problematic downstream sorbent storage.

“Smaller particle size leads to lower sorbent quantity consumed. The VIPER Mill delivers the fastest return on capital investment,” states Jon Norman, DSI Technology Manager, UCC. “A single VIPER Mill can potentially reduce sorbent costs by millions of dollars annually compared to other DSI systems.”

The VIPER Mill is proven with trona and coarse sodium bicarbonate sorbents commonly used in DSI applications with eastern bituminous and PRB coal-fired power plants. In an SO2 removal application, the UCC Viper Mill can reduce sorbent usage by 30-50 percent. That equates to a $3.0 million annual savings over unmilled trona for a typical 500MW PRB unit at a 60 percent SO2 removal rate. In SO3 removal applications, the ultra-small sorbent particle size helps to achieve aggressive ppm targets, while reducing trona usage by more than 50 percent.

The VIPER Mill can ship on a fully pre-piped and pre-wired skid for simple installation and lower installed cost, and is available in standard and custom designs. The modular skid system features a patent-pending automated cleaning system to eliminate sorbent build-up and is engineered to provide easy access for preventative maintenance and life-cycle rebuilds. The automated cleaning system enables a full system cleaning cycle in less than 30 minutes and redundant skids or a bypass system ensure continued operation.

UCC DSI’s industry leading technology, including the new VIPER Mill, provides utilities with the most efficient and economical method to meet current and future emission limits and regulations. UCC offers on-site customized demonstration testing to evaluate the overall performance of its VIPER Mill and DSI technologies. Removal results are compared to a proprietary UCC database of previous testing at other coal-fired power plants validating predictable performance




KSE : Bulk Out Loading Process for PCG in Thailand

Bladel, The Netherlands -- In the fourth quarter of 2011 KSE received a phased order for the bulk out loading process of Perfect Companion Group (PCG) in Thailand. This order includes both, ALFRA dosing slide platform, The ALFRA Bulkweigher, frame for movable blenders and the PROMASST automation software.

The ordered parts are intended for filling the hoppers. First, the exact composition of the various pet food grains of PCG is dosed by the ALFRA dosing slide platform. The exact composition goes through the platform to the movable ALFRA bulk weigher. Then the pet food goes to the blenders, where it will be mixed on moving and it will be loaded in the hopper. Then out of the hopper it will be packed in the packaging line.

December 2011 PCG preferred the PROMASST automation software of KSE. The automation will take care of enough finished product to the packaging line to run continuously.

“The transport to Thailand was quite a challenge, because the spare parts were very large. Especially for this order the machines where first completely put together and tested. Then, for transport they were broken down completely. By means of a sophisticated system, they can easily put together again in Thailand”, according to project manager Robin Paaijmans.
