Construction Progressing at Altair's Camden Project
------------------------------------------------------------
CODY, Wyo., Feb. 13 /PRNewswire/ -- Altair International Inc.
(Nasdaq: ALTI) today announced that the pilot plant being
erected at its Camden, Tennessee mineral property is nearing
completion. The plant will process heavy mineral sands through
a gravity separation system designed and fabricated by MD
Mineral Technologies in Australia. Shipped in modular form,
it was delivered to Camden in January, where MD Mineral
Technologies is also in charge of plant erection and
commissioning. Earlier site work included plant site
preparation, the installation of water and power lines
and the construction of an impoundment for retention of
processed sand.
"Commissioning of the pilot plant is a critical milestone in
the development of our Camden mineral property," said C.
Patrick Costin, Vice President of Altair. "The Camden site
is fully permitted for pilot operations and we're very anxious
to begin processing material through the plant."
Altair's engineers are working closely with the MD group and
will assume operational responsibility later this month.
Pilot operations will establish mineral recovery factors for
installed gravity circuits and generate heavy mineral
concentrates in bulk quantities for "dry-mill" preparation
of final titanium and zircon products.
Altair International owns a proprietary technology for making
nanocrystalline materials of unique quality, economically in
large quantities. The company is currently developing special
nanomaterials with potential applications in fuel cells, hard
coatings, catalysts, cosmetics, paints, batteries, semi-
conductors and telecommunications. The technology may also be
used to make paint pigment at a cost forecast to be substantially
lower than commercial technologies employed today. Altair
holds mineral leases on a "world class" titanium mineral
sand deposit in Tennessee and is in the process of
constructing a pilot plant at that site. The company's
other principle asset is the Altair Centrifugal Jig, an
environmentally friendly breakthrough technology for mining,
coal treatment and environmental remediation.

New Compact Metal Separator for Areas with Limited Space
------------------------------------------------------------
ERIE, PA - Eriez Magnetics’ new Model CMS Metal Separator is
a compact system designed for areas where vertical spacing is
restricted. The separator detects ferrous, non-ferrous and
stainless steel metals in free falling or gravity fed products
that are dry and nonconductive. The unit can be used in a
variety of applications where vertical spacing is limited,
including the plastics, food, chemical and wood industries.
The standard CMS Metal Separator consists of a metal detector,
control and reject device all encased in a NEMA 12 enclosure.
It features mounting brackets positioned on the corners of
the enclosure for easy installation. An optional stainless
steel hopper to mount on top of the system is available.

MAC Equipment Consolidates Manufacturing Operations
------------------------------------------------------------
Monday, February 5, 2001 - Gary L. Cavey, President and CEO
of MAC Equipment announced today the closure of the High Point,
North Carolina manufacturing plant and the consolidation of
its operations into the Houston, Texas and Sabetha, Kansas
facilities. This decision is based on a strategic analysis
of MAC business objectives. Lower production costs will be
realized from condensed inventory, freight and order control
efficiencies. Increased utilization in Houston and Sabetha
will reduce overhead costs.
In addition, reductions in invested capital and other expenses
will have positive strategic effects. Importantly, sufficient
growth capacity for future demand increases will be maintained.
Cavey added, "Our commitment to markets, products and regions
historically served by High Point remains strong. To our
customers, the level service, delivered cost and superior
quality will not diminish due to this consolidation. Although
a difficult decision, this will allow MAC to better serve our
customers with faster, more efficient service with increase
manufacturing flexibility and reduced cost".
Future production will be relocated into both the Houston and
Sabetha plants to strengthen their load. Certain non-manufacturing
functions will continue to be performed in High Point including
Engineering, Field Service and Sales.
MAC Equipment offers customers technology-driven solutions
to air filtration and material management challenges.
Specializing in pneumatic conveying and dry air filtration
systems, MAC has more than 30 years of experience working
with customers to create innovative solutions. Supported by
the MAC Service Center providing components and replacement
parts, along with two state-of-the art test facilities, and
in-house process controls group and a professional project
management team, MAC Equipment focuses on delivering superior
results driven by quality workmanship and a focus on
understanding and solving customers’ needs.

Hot Messages from the Help Forum

People post their requests for help and offer their suggestions
to others in our open forum.
Mr. Willis needs help with gravity discharge from silo:
My company has nine steel 1000T silos, Diameter 11m x 18m high,
which are used to store dried maize (corn). The silos have a
flat concrete bottom each with there own horizontal screw auger,
which discharges into a central drag conveyor. The silos each
has facility to install a side mounted backup auger. Recently
one of the main augers failed so we used the side mounted auger.
Unfortunately the auger emptied the maize from one side rather
than the centre of the silo. This resulted in a ‘wrinkle'
forming in the wall of the silo 2/3rds up from the bottom,
covering an area of 2m². Obviously I need to avoid this
happening again.
I was thinking of permanently installing an sloping tube
inside each silo to gravity discharge the maize into the
drag conveyor. The tube would have a hole in the top to line
up with the centre of the silo. This way we could discharge
2/3rds of the silo with out using the power auger.
Does anyone have any experience in this area, or if you could
recommend any reference material on this topic. Such as good
'grain handling' textbook which would give some engineering
design parameters.
Any recommendations would be most appreciated.

Mr. Amit needs aeration air for pellet silo:
We intend to provide aeration facility for our PP pellet
silos. These silos store pellet directly after extrusion.
What linear velocity of air should we design the system
for? A early reply would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks and Best Regards,
Amit

Call For Photographs!
------------------------------------------------------------
This week's photo is of a Multi-Port, Wye-Line Diverter
designed, fabricated and recently delivered to customer which
handles nylon resin by Salina Vortex. It is capable of
transporting pneumatically-conveyed material from five sources
to five destinations simultaneously. The diverter incorporates
valve sensor manifold technology and was pre-assembled, piped,
wired and plumbed on a specially constructed steel frame.
The finished valve assembly was 26 '8" long, 8' 6" wide, 8' 6"
tall and weighed 13,000 pounds.
