Cascade Chute Helps Cement Maker Keep Within EPA Guidelines
------------------------------------------------------------
PEBCO Inc. of Paducah, Kentucky has entered into an agreement
with Cleveland Potash of England to manufacture and sell the
Cleveland Cascade Chute in North and South America. As a part
of this agreement, PEBCO has purchased all the patent rights
to the Cleveland Cascade Chute in these territories.
The Cleveland Cascade Chute has enabled Lafarge Corporation
in Grand Chain, Illinois to successfully load finished cement
into barges within EPA guidelines.
Lafarge personnel visited chute manufacturers in North America
and Internationally. Innovation within Lafarge has kept Lafarge
competitive on the world-wide cement market.
The system at Lafarge/Joppa features a dual Cascade Chute
arrangement. The finished cement discharges from the weigh
bin - onto dual airslides - to our dual Cascade Chute
arrangement - into open top barges. Each chute handles 300
tons per hour - loading 600 tons per hour into the barge.
The Cascade Chute system includes dual material probes, load
cell system, pneumatic & electric hose reels, and special
adapter cement skirts.
How It Works
The truncated, oppositely-inclined cones, supported by straps
and covered by a wind shroud, enable material to be loaded in
mass flow at low velocity. In this way, the bulk particles
remain tightly packed together; thereby minimizing the release
of small dust particles. Operating on the principle of mass
flow at low velocity, dust emission is minimized without
recourse to secondary extraction systems, while degradation
and segregation are considerably reduced.
This patented chute has applications in ship, barge, truck,
railcar, and silo loading as well as conveyor-to-conveyor
transfer.
The solution to the loading of cement with the Cascade Chute
culminates a multi-year effort by PEBCO and the chute
inventors - Steve Maxwell and Ian Barnard. According to
Mr. Maxwell, "The two most difficult products to handle are
alumina and finished cement. The Cascade Chute has
successfully handled a diverse range of dry bulk solids
from finished cement and alumina to calcined petroleum coke,
calcined lime, wheat, soda ash, potash, phosphate and
lead oxide"

Buhler Forms Long-term partnership with Continental
------------------------------------------------------------
The world's leading supplier to the automotive industry,
Continental, relies on a long-term partnership with the global
Buhler Technology Group.
The company has signed a contract with Buhler for the
production plant it has acquired from Matador in the Slovakian
town of Puchov. Buhler will supply an installation for the
handling of beaded carbon black for the production of tires.
The system's handling capacity is about 20 metric tons per
hour across a conveying distance totaling 150 meters.
The installation includes a receiving section for materials
delivered by tankers and the conveying system from the
storage bins to the downstream day bins of the production
lines. The Fluid-Schub-Flex system applied allows gentle
material conveying without generating dust. The installation
will go on stream in mid-2000.
Buhler is the global technology partner for efficient production
systems, engineering solutions and the associated services in
the rubber industry and in the fields of chemical process
engineering, food processing and die casting.

New Gravimetric Blender for Non Free-Flowing Materials
------------------------------------------------------------
The Comet Exact-A-Batch Gravimetric Blender MP is a gravimetric
blender, which can meter not only pellets, but non free-flowing
powders.
The unit operates similar to the standard Exact-A-Batch
Gravimetric Blender, except that it has been retrofitted with
a patented non free-flowing powder dispenser. The free-flowing
pellets are dispensed into the scale by a fast acting reliable
pinch valve. The pinch valves eliminate wear and jamming
problems commonly associated with slide gate gravimetric units.
This new unit can meter up to 2 free-flowing components and 2
non free-flowing components in this particular design. Many
processors need blowing agent, foaming agent, UV stabilizers,
flame retardant, and pigments metered into their gravimetric
blender; the non free-flowing dispenser makes processing these
additives possible.
Other Features:
Accuracy of 1/10 of 1% of requested ratio is routinely achieved.
This accuracy can be maintained on each ingredient from batch
to batch because of the Real Time Live Scale (RTLS). The live
scale weighs each ingredient as it is deposited into the scale
hopper. This eliminates the need for "snapshot" weighing which
is prevalent in other units.
"Snapshot" weighing means as each batch is processed, the computer
looks at weights dispensed and corrections are made to following
batches. This results in "hunting" and inconsistencies from
batch to batch. The Comet pinch valves and control eliminate
the "hunting".
Optional multi-task microprocessor control panel with touch
screen provides central communication using an IBM compatible
computer to communicate with one or many blenders.
This new gravimetric blender can be utilized for central
blending or individual machine applications.
Model EAB-2105-MP with standard controls, costs $10,500.

Hot Messages from the Help Forum
------------------------------------------------------------
People post their requests for help and offer their suggestions
to others in our open forum.
Mr. Ferrio needs an automatic filling system:
For our laboratories, we're interested in a system with the
following abilities:
- Automated filling of vials with powder material but...from
many different source samples (1 to 5g of powder. We must take
little amounts of sub-samples (about 1mg+/- 0.1, knowing exact
weight). All the weighted sub-sample must be placed and packaged
into small tin capsules, air-free. All the elements in contact
with the powder must be cleaned every new sample
We've been searching for something like this, but usually the
systems that could be used for automated vial filling must use
a large amount from the same bulk material.
Is there any system like this? If not..why not? Is due to
technical or economical problems ?
Thank you for your help,

Amat needs help with pneumatic conveying:
We are in process of debottlenecking our PP pellet pneumatic
conveying system. The system is designed for air temp. of
100 degrees C at pellet pickup point. Presently we are
operating at 55 degrees C.
Can we reduce the line pressure drop and hence increase
conveying capacity by increasing the air temperature? Can
anyone inform any web site where I can get design principles
of pneumatic conveying system.
Thanks & Regards,
Amit
