In Operation by August 2002

The World's Largest Potato Starch Silo Being Constructed

(Hoofddorp - The Netherlands)  Spaans Bulk Handling Systems is currently building a 70.000m³ silo for the storage of potato starch for Emsland Stärke GmbH in Emlichheim, Germany. The diameter of the silo is 50.6 meters and the product is stored up to a height of 35 meter. For this project the contractor Anton Meyer is responsible for the civil works, together with the engineering company Lindschulte. The silo is planned to go into operation in August 2002.

Click hereThe material is taken to the top of the silo by a pneumatic conveying system, where it is conveyed via several screw conveyors to the upper trolley. From there it falls through a harmonic spout to a lower trolley which hangs by hoisting cables from the upper trolley. A screw conveyor is fixed to this lower trolley, which spreads the material equally over the full diameter of the silo by stepwise rotation of the upper trolley and lower trolley. The material is spread in a horizontal surface, which prevents irregular pressure on the silo wall. The upper trolley rests on the side of the silo wall on rails, and on the other side on a central column.

The discharge of mammoth silos works with an artificial core flow through a discharge chute in the central column. This column contains trapdoors that open during the discharge of the silo. During the discharge of the silo, the screw conveyor on the lower trolley rotates contrariwise and moves the material inwards, where it drops through the open trapdoors in the discharge chute.

During this discharge, the upper trolley and lower trolley rotate at a constant low speed around the central column so that with each rotation the screws scrape off a layer (a few centimeters) of material. At the bottom of the discharge chute in the central column a short retrieving screw conveyor carries it to a long screw conveyor in the cellar of the silo. This conveyor transports the potato starch into a vertical screw conveyor which fills the pneumatic sending system to transport the starch back to the factory.

This type of silo is particularly suitable for free flowing products such as grains, beans and minerals and non-free flowing products such as starch, coal, fly ash and gypsum.

Spaans Bulk Handling Systems specializes in the engineering and manufacturing of tailor-made equipment for storage and handling of all kinds of bulk materials and sludge.

"Cuts the Cost of Installation"

ActiveX Software Interface Added to SiloPatrol System

ELBURN, IL - Unaffected by dust, vapors, vessel construction, or acoustic noise, the SiloPatrol inventory monitoring system provides reliable continuous level measurement in a variety of applications. Monitor Technologies' economical system recently added a new user interface, an ActiveX® software package.

Click hereWhen using Monitor's ActiveX software package, SiloPatrol inventory monitors can be integrated into a PLC/PC control system, without the use of analog signals. The SMU "smart" sensor uses RS-485 multi-drop communications which, in conjunction with the use of the available ActiveX software, significantly cuts the cost of installation by simplifying wiring and eliminating the need for analog I/O cards. The communication driver contained within Monitor's ActiveX software manages the message handling with the SMUs.

The specific ActiveX controls provided allow the control system designer to easily place SiloPatrol inventory monitoring functions directly into the system's operator interface screens and control the SMU(s). In Screen Design Mode, the available sensor functions can be placed exactly where they are needed by "dragging and dropping" them in place. Monitor offers two versions of the ActiveX software package: basic and full-featured. Both packages can be used to request and read measurements and to read status and error messages.

The full-featured software will further save time for control system designers by providing ActiveX controls that will convert and calculate units of measure, construct bin icons and setup alarms.

Help Forum

Hot Messages from the Help Forum

People post their requests for help and offer their suggestions to others in our open forum.

Mr. Mandralis need help with uniform dosing:

I have a cylindrical vessel (ID 70 cm and filled height 40 cm) with flat bottom and a scraper at the bottom.  Two parallel progressive screws at either side of the center of the scraper are taking the product out all along the bottom of the vessel.  The feed of new material is from the top and near the wall (half way between the start of the two screws.

I would like to achieve as much plug flow as possible so that all material arriving at the top spends same time in the vessel before exiting from the bottom screws.  Currently, with the scraper moving at 2-20 RPM the material arriving at the top funnels towards the center and exits much faster than expected while the material which is closer to the wall and at lower level stays there for a long time.

Do you have a suggestion on what kind of paddles and where should be located?  Any other way to make it work?

Mr. Barrett needs to de-aerate powder:

Anyone know of some straightforward De-aeration equipment to help increase bulk density of an aerated powder product?

New process has increased aeration of product making handling difficult.
