New Centrifugal Impact Mill
Grinds & De-Lumps
UTICA,
NY -- A new 24-inch (610 mm) sanitary stainless steel
Centrifugal Impact Mill Model CIM-24-SS from Munson
Machinery provides coarse to fine grinding (325 mesh) of
friable materials into controlled particle sizes, as well as
lump breaking and conditioning of fibrous materials.
High
speed rotation of the inner disc creates centrifugal force
that accelerates bulk material entering the central inlet of
the opposing stationary disc. As material travels from the
center to the periphery of the discs at high speed, it
passes through a "treacherous path" of five intermeshing
rows of rotating and stationary pins, with the desired tight
particle size distribution obtained by controlling the rotor
speed.
Setting the infinitely variable rotor speed between several
hundred rpm and 5400 rpm provides the flexibility to use the
machine for coarse grinding and de-agglomerating as well as
for fine grinding.
Also
called a “Pin Mill”, the unit is said to handle wet or dry
materials, to produce tight particle size distribution at
any given rotor speed setting, and to sanitize rapidly.
According to the manufacturer, the unit provides high
throughput rates per horsepower relative to machines
employing screens, hammers, knives or rolls, depending on
application.
Other
size reduction equipment offered by the company includes
screen classifying cutters, rotary de-clumpers, attrition
mills, hammer mills and shredders. Blending equipment also
produced by the company includes ribbon, paddle and plow
blenders, rotary batch mixers, rotary continuous mixers,
high intensity blenders and Forberg mixers.

Buhler Group : Loading Follows
Unloading
Uzwil,
Switzerland -- Economic progress is yielding results: The
Buhler Grain Handling business unit is now also installing
ship loading systems in China beside the ship unloaders
supplied up to now.
The
port of Beiliang is located near the international sea port
city of Dalian in the northeast of China. It is
strategically located, boasting excellent road, rail, and
air links. At present, the port has ten berths for
ocean-going vessels, including docks for grain,
petrochemicals, and vegetables plus one multipurpose berth
each for containers and general commodities. The port of
Beiliang handles 28 million metric tons of goods every year.
A
number of world-class grain terminals for storing and
handling grain are situated just next to the berths for
grain ships. This entire “grain complex” consists of three
large docks for grain handling, a grain terminal elevator
with a holding capacity of 870,000 metric tons, and a
national grain warehouse that holds 600,000 tons.
For
overland transportation, a total of 2400 hopper cars are
available in four marshaling yards, in addition to over 40
trucks for road shipments. The facility is also equipped
with control and test systems, proportioning installations,
a complete automatic control system, an information
management system, and other installations for handling and
weighing bulk materials.
The
maximum capacity of the grain transshipping facility for
unloading rail vehicles and loading ships is 4000 metric
tons an hour. That for unloading ships amounts to 2000 tons
per hour, and for loading rail vehicles 1000 tons per hour.
The annual grain handling volume amounts to 12 million
metric tons.
First
Loader from Buhler
In
early 2005, the Beiliang port authority decided to increase
loading capacity by adding two more ship loaders. The goal
was to optimize operations and to create a possibility to
simultaneously load ships with different materials at two
different piers. As part of this expansion project, the port
authority decided to install two Buhler ship loaders
provided with advanced equipment and reflecting the state of
the art – the first such units to be supplied to a customer
in China. These mechanical loaders operate continuously with
a throughput of 1000 metric tons per hour each.
The
two new ship loaders are equipped with loading head dust
suppressors. Throughout the loading operation, these units
effectively suppress dust emissions, keeping the
surroundings clean and ensuring compliance with
environmental protection regulations. The effectiveness of
this dust control system has proved to be higher than that
of systems applied on other ship loaders.
In
addition, the two facilities also have a state-of-the-art
automatic system for the remote control of all operations.
Other features include various installations for ensuring
safe and reliable operation. The entire installation is
provided with a dependable quality assurance system from
design features to main components.
Parts
of the loaders were manufactured in China under the Buhler
quality assurance system. The two new loaders from Buhler
have definitely improved the efficiency and quality of ship
loading in the port of Beiliang.
Buhler
is a global Technology Group and a system partner for the
supply of plant, equipment, and process know-how in the
fields of Food Processing, Chemical Engineering, and Die
Casting, with some 6,000 employees worldwide.

Mr. Lacy wants info on a
"static" screw
conveyor:
I am looking for a piece of
equipment to elevate a mixture of dry products about 20
feet. We have tried several different technologies with
varying degrees of success, but have not found the "ideal"
solution.
We have tried the bucket
elevator, "Z" belt conveyor, standard screw conveyor,
vertical screw, and shaftless screw. Does anyone have
experience with the static screw? How does it work? The
material is a mixture of cement, plaster, perlite,
vermiculite, limestone, and similar materials.
It is critical to the
operation that the powders do not segregate.

Mr. Falcioni needs help with
conveying vent valve:
I have a question on
pneumatic conveying. We have a very abrasive material (many
times more abrasive than cement) that is pneumatically
conveyed into a transport vessel or pot. These pots
pressurize and send the material to bins downstream. I am
sure that this system is pretty standard in the pneumatic
conveying world.
My question deals with the
vent line on the pot, which opens at the beginning of this
cycle to vent the system. The present valve in place is a
butterfly valve which see extremes wear and fails every 2.5
months. It appears that the valve fails in the areas which
will see the highest velocity on both the disc and the seat
when the valve opens.
Is there any other type of
valve that would be more appropriate for this application?
