"Name the New Blender" Contest, Win $750 from Patterson-Kelley
------------------------------------------------------------
The new "Post Lift" Blender from P-K is exactly what
pharmaceutical manufacturers are looking for.
When a critical mix is required, the pharmaceutical industry
relies on the Patterson-Kelley Twin Shell Blender with its high
speed intensifier. It's common to formulate 500 mg of active
ingredient with 1000 kilograms of other powders to make
4 million identical tablets.
In addition to accurate mixing requirements, the industry
also has material transport and containment issues. On March
21-23, 2000 at INTERPHEX, we'll unveil a new and versatile
blending system that addresses those concerns:
The "Post Lift" Blender
Maintaining the functional equivalence of traditional designs,
P-K has adapted improved versions of the Twin Shell and its
Intensifier to a rotating Post Lift for greater processing
versatility.
Each Twin Shell and/or Cross Flow vessel is transportable on
its individual cart and automatically locks to the docking
arm of a floor-to-ceiling post lift. The improved intensifier
can accommodate greater batch size, variations and is furnished
in an "all welded" design for easy cleaning. The post lift
with rotating column can accurately dock the vessel to numerous
locations within the processing suite. A variety of vessel
sizes can fit each docking arm and the entire column can
be purged for Class 1, Group D environments.
Each post lift blender is furnished with the PK "Smart Blender"
process control system featuring a "touch screen" controller,
Wonderware software and an Allen Bradley PLC for the ultimate
in batch records, security and ease of use by an operator.
In spite of all these benefits, there is still something missing...
and that's a name for this blending system.
You can help us select a name and win 25 share of Harsco
Corporation stock valued AT $750. Three submitted names will
be selected and each will win 25 shares of stock. The winning
selection and the name of PK new product will be posted on our
web site and mailed to those who participate in the contest.

Portasilo Handles Sewage Sludge Granule Disposal Problem
------------------------------------------------------------
Portasilo has successfully completed another project for the
storage and handling of dried sewage granules at Pyewipe Sludge
Treatment Centre (STC), Grimsby on behalf of Purac Ltd. This
STC is at the forefront of Anglian Waters sludge strategy.
Portasilo's contract included the supply of storage silos
and mechanical handling equipment for dried sewage granules.
The plant consists of sludge granule storage silos, which
are filled and emptied by a series of mechanical conveyors.
Dried sewage sludge dust is potentially explosive, hence the
silos are fitted with explosion relief hatches with break
wires to shut down the infeed and outfeed systems in the
event of an explosion.
In addition to the problems of potential explosions, the
sewage sludge granules also present the risk of spontaneous
combustion during storage. Temperature of the granules is
therefore monitored by a multi-point temperature probe
within each silo. Should a high temperature be detected at
any one of these points, the silo is flooded with Carbon
Dioxide to render the atmosphere inert inside the silo.
The atmosphere is monitored for the product of combustion.
Carbon monoxide levels are monitored on a continuous basis.
Should high levels be detected, the inert gas flooding
system is also triggered. This safety has been developed
by Portasilo specially for this application.
Bridging in the silos is a possibility. These events are
negated by fitting of the patented and award winning
Rotoflo discharge valve. These units discharge to a bagging
system via a reversible screw conveyor, which can also
discharge into open topped vehicles via a telescopic
loading spout.

PIAB Introduces New Family of Vacuum Conveying Systems
------------------------------------------------------------
PIAB Material Handling, manufacturer of industrial vacuum
conveyors and components, has introduced its new VC100-1200
family of conveying systems.
Powered by the company's highly regarded pneumatically driven
vacuum pumps, these systems safely and quietly transport up
to 10 tons/hour of powders, granules and fluids in virtually
any pharmaceutical environment.
PIAB vacuum conveyors are constructed of stainless steel to
meet stringent sanitary requirements and are FDA approved.
They are ideal for food-handling, pharmaceutical manufacturing
and chemical production, as well as other high-purity and
batch-processing applications. Designed for flexibility and
ease of installation, PIAB VC100-1200 conveyors may be

Ms. Peterlin needs help with coal dust:
I am trying to simulate pollution with coal-dust particles due

coal dust particles. Does someone know, where can I find this
data?
Thank you,
Monika Peterlin

Mr. Martins needs a point level detector:
We are looking for a point level detector (chute switch) to be
used in our chutes that are used between conveyors.
The problem is that we transport different kinds of materials
(coal, iron ore, limestone, blast furnace mud, etc.), in the same
conveyors. We have tried capacitance sensors, but they failed
to work, because the materials have different capacitive
characteristics.
We also tried mechanical switches, but the materials, when wet,
tend to incrust on the probe and keep it actuated. The environment
is very abrasive and dusty.
Any suggestions please mailto:amartins@tubarao.com.br
