ATEC Steel acquires new Manufacturing Plant

Parsons, KS -- Tank Connection Affiliate Group announced today that their affiliate company, ATEC Steel has acquired a 60,000 sq. ft. manufacturing facility in Baxter Springs, KS.

ATEC Steel is an industry leader in field-weld tank fabrication, specialty steel construction and field construction services in North America. ATEC currently maintains two other facilities including a 100,000 sq. ft., state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in Baxter Springs, KS, and a 55,000 sq. ft. manufacturing facility in Gardena, CA.

This new addition will allow expansion of their specialty steel construction and pressure vessel product lines. ATEC products and services are routinely specified in the power, petroleum, water and wastewater, minerals and mining industries.

Tank Connection and ATEC Steel are vertically integrated companies, which promotes their global position as competitive price leaders. Starting with steel procurement at the mill and finishing with construction services in the field, all value-added design, manufacturing, project management, system integration and field installation services are performed by company personnel.

“While other companies have been scaling back, we are investing in the future of U.S. manufactured storage products,” stated Noel Garrett, president of ATEC Steel.

“Currently, we are in the middle of an expansion project of installing a rail spur into our facility, which allows us to receive steel directly from the mill. Globally, our clients tout 'American Made’ as the best capital equipment that can be purchased and that really says it all.”

ATEC’s new plant addition will allow them to expand their specialty steel product lines as well as their coating applications. ATEC is compliant with API 620, API 650, API 653, AWWA D100 and other national and international codes. ATEC also maintains ASME “S”, “U”, “PP”, and NBIC “R” code stamp certifications.

TCAG currently includes 6 manufacturing facilities in the U.S. and employs over 400 employees. Their international dealer and rep network has expanded to cover all global regions.

The Tank Connection Affiliate Group is a “single source” provider for all types of dry bulk and liquid storage systems. TCAG offers over 100 different types of storage containment products custom tailored for each application.

PAT for automated pharma mill control

Malvern, UK -- A newly published article, jointly authored by specialists from Malvern Instruments and a major pharmaceutical company, describes the implementation of a Malvern Insitec on-line particle size analyzer on an active pharmaceutical ingredient milling operation at a commercial site. The Insitec was used to transform a stand-alone manual mill into an automated process unit that will integrate into the manufacturing facility.

Automation benefits include improved product quality, increased throughput and less waste, and the authors state that this proven solution also opens the route to semi-continuous operation and real-time release, both of which are important long-term goals for operational excellence.

Unlike some process analytical technology (PAT) instruments that are modifications of laboratory solutions, the Insitec laser diffraction particle size analyzer was designed specifically for use in the process environment and is proving valuable for milling operations such as this.

The article describes the change from batch milling with particle size measured off-line, to the use of real-time, on-line measurement and control, and the efficiencies and benefits that this has delivered.

The change began with a pilot-plant trial of the Insitec, followed by implementation at the commercial manufacturing site and the successful development of closed loop control of the mill. With automated control in place the mill responds flexibly to batch to batch variation in the feed, consistently maintaining product quality.

Multi Stage : Fine Dust Particle Collection

Seal Beach, CA -- Allied Environmental Technologies, Inc. had been developing a novel Multi-Stage Collector (MSC™) technology for ultra-high efficiency removal of the ultra-fine particulate matter. The MSC concept is a patented process (Krigmont, US Pat. № 6,524,369 and US Pat. № 6,932,857) that entails a unique integration of electrostatic precipitation and barrier filtration of particulate.

The multi-stage collector (MSC) is a new concept for particulate control. The intent of the MSC is to combine the best features of the two-stage ESP and a FF in a manner that has not been done before. The MSC concept can be broadly summarized as a system in which multiple stages are utilized, where each stage performs its primary function, and the multiple stages operate synergistically to provide significantly improved overall performance.

The principal objective of the MSC is to substantially improve fine particulate collection by combining both electrostatic charging/collection and filtration processes. It separates zones for particle charging and collecting, thus providing a new unique collector design with improved efficiency to collect high resistance fine dust particles.

The MSC consists of a superbly compact multi-stage collector for collecting dust, fume, etc. for industrial gases, which is independent of electrical resistivity. Therefore, it will be especially beneficial when electrical resistivity of such dust or fume as precipitated, exceeds 10 to the power of 11 Ohm-cm or is extremely low, for example less than 10 to the power of 4 Ohm-cm.

Furthermore, this design will be particularly advantageous when the material to be collected consists mostly of a sub-micron and ultra-fine dust or fume. It also could be easily integrated with various catalysts for multitude of the gaseous pollutants collection.

Lecture 2:  Design principles for reliable flow

This second lecture in the Solids Flow Series will further develop the topics of flow problems, their effects, and flow patterns discussed during Lecture 1. The design principles required to ensure reliable flow from your bins, hoppers, and feeders will covered extensively.

Topics covered in this lecture include the ASTM standard for measuring bulk solids flow properties, using the Jenike Shear Tester. This device allows the user to determine material wall friction properties as well as its cohesive strength. Wall friction tests yielding the angle of wall friction, leads to determination of hopper angles required to ensure flow along the walls, which is mass flow.

Additionally, measurement of a bulk solid’s cohesive strength is illustrated. Once your material’s cohesive strength is determined, you will learn how to calculate hopper opening sizes required to prevent arching
