Stable Micro Systems Shows New Powder Rheometer at POWTECH
------------------------------------------------------------
Stable Micro Systems, 27 - 29 March 2001, Powtech/Technopharm,
Nürnberg, Hall 9, Stand 535
Following its successful introduction at Interphex UK in November,
Stable Micro Systems will be showing its revolutionary system
for accurately measuring the flow properties of powders,
granules and wet mixes in the pharmaceutical, cosmetic,
chemical and food industries. The introduction of the ManUmit
Powder Rheometer is regarded as one the most significant
developments for pharmaceutical quality control in the past
decade. It will help manufacturers to avoid typical problems
such as batch and source variation of ingredients, caking
during storage and sticking during production and filling.
The new Powder Rheometer measures the flow properties not
only of dry powders, excipients and drug substances, but also
cohesive powders, wet mixes and granules. Its innovative
approach to the characterization of flow properties provides
users and manufacturers with essential data on the rheology
of these critical materials.
The ManUmit Powder Rheometer is an accurate, user-friendly
instrument that is capable of pre-conditioning the powder
sample, and then repeating exactly the same flow test time
after time. The operating principle of the ManUmit Powder
Rheometer is simple a specially designed rotary blade,
similar to a boat’s propeller, is rotated through the powder
sample. By measuring the force, torque and energy profile
necessary to rotate the blade through the sample, the
rheometer provides highly sensitive data on the sample’s
flow properties. To ensure that the data accurately mimics
real-life applications, the ManUmit Powder Rheometer from
Stable Micro Systems can precondition the sample for
testing in an aerated or compacted state, as required,
and then cause flow by slicing, shearing, compacting or
lifting. The user controls the test speed and the angle
of the blade path so as to ensure the flow caused is
complimentary to the required sample characteristic, and
the process conditions.
The design and operation of the ManUmit Powder Rheometer
has been optimized for ease of use. Testing is possible
with only very small sample volumes, as low as 10ml,
which minimizes both disruption and expense. These samples
are placed in a precision stainless steel or borosilicate
glass sample vessel; the latter allows users to monitor
what is happening to the powder as the sample is displaced.
The data is gathered and analyzed and subsequently presented
as graphs, which are quickly and simply interpreted. By
providing a single diagram representing the flow properties
of the sample, users can easily compare and rank different
samples and materials.
The ManUmit Powder Rheometer will be welcomed by manufacturers
as it allows objective testing of raw materials, blends
and finished products as diverse as paint, pesticides,
powder coatings, starches, eye shadows, infant drink
formulae and soluble aspirin.
To see the new powder rheometer in action, please visit us
on stand 535 in Hall 9 or, for further information, contact

Gemco Valves New "Sample Thief" Product Sampler
------------------------------------------------------------
GemcoValve's new Sample Thief is designed to take a product
sample in process as it is being transferred between stages.
A Teflon thief is inserted into the flow of material. During
normal operation, the inverted V shaped profile allows the
material to flow over the sampling thief without material
flow interruption. When turned 180 degrees, the profile
changes to a pocket to sample the material as it flows
through the process. The handle clamps to a ferrule in the
transfer chute to lock the thief in place. It is clearly
marked with the orientation of the profile. The entire
assembly consists of just three pieces allowing complete
disassembly and easy cleaning.
Our sampling thieves can be customized to your specifications
including material, diameters, lengths, profiles and
pocket sizes.
Please call or e-mail us with your requirements.

Processing Rice with New Plant Layout
------------------------------------------------------------
Buhler has created a plant layout for Fujii Shouten in Japan
which is new for the Japanese rice industry. For the first
time, the concept of a multi-level system was implemented,
offering advantages in terms of sanitation and surface area
requirement.
Fujii Shouten is a family-operated business located in the
prefecture of Niigata. This is an area where Japan’s best
rice qualities are harvested, which are processed into
various end products by Fujii Shouten. In 1998, Buhler
already supplied equipment to Fujii Shouten for cleaning
rice and grading it according to thickness. The positive
production experiences with the machinery and with the
service offered by Buhler Yokohama prompted Fujii Shouten
to award the order for a new rice processing installation
to Buhler, despite strong Japanese competition. The contract
comprised the supply of the mechanical and electrical
equipment plus installation and start-up. The supply included
a rice cleaning system with a throughput of 10 metric tons
per hour, a polishing line for 5 tons per hour, and a
sizing and color sorting system with a capacity of 2.5
tons per hour.
New plant layout
The plant layout implemented by Buhler for Fujii Shouten is
a novelty for the Japanese rice industry. The concept of a
multi-level installation, which has been realized for the
first time ever, offers significant advantages in terms of
sanitation and surface area requirement. All the process
machines and the bins for storing the raw materials and the
finished products are arranged on a three-level steel
structure. On the bottom level, the only equipment installed
are conveyors and the bagging installations for the various
finished products and byproducts. This configuration has
resulted in a compact plant layout while at the same time
ensuring easy access to all the equipment.
Customized flow sheet offers the customer maximum value
When designing the flow sheet, consideration had to be given
to the fact that the plant was to process a large number
of different rice varieties. Therefore, in laying out the
plant the utmost attention was paid to ensuring
segregation-free mechanical materials handling. An MNKA
chain conveyor, a type especially designed for satisfying
the needs of the food processing industry, is therefore
applied as far upstream as the raw materials receiving point.
The rice is supplied to Fujii Shouten in Big-Bags or
standard-size bags. A special feature in the cleaning flow
sheet is the Combinator MTCD, which removes stones as well
as undesirable low-density impurities. The cleaned white
rice is gently polished to maximum gloss by a HighPoly BSPC
water polisher. Remotely controlled flow balancers of type
MZAG control the flow rate of the material to the polishing
machine with high precision. Following the removal of the
brokens, the polished rice undergoes extensive color
sorting. In a two-stage process, the "Truechromatic"
Sortex 90003 bichromatic color sorter removes rice kernels
with a defective color as well as remaining foreign
particles. Then the clean material is divided into a
chalky and a non-chalky kernel fraction in three subsequent
color sorters. These products are then separately marketed.
All plant areas, from reception to bagging of the finished
products, are controlled by the state-of-the-art computer
control system.
Efficient product management
Thanks to the tight project management of Buhler Yokohama,
it was possible to start up the plant at the end of January
2000 after an installation time of merely two months. On
February 15, 2000, the facility was dedicated in a Shinto
ceremony attended by representatives of customers, suppliers
and the workforce. Fujii Shouten is greatly satisfied
with the yields and with the quality of the end products
achieved. In the fiercely contested Japanese rice market,
this amply proves Buhler’s capabilities.
Buhler is the global technology partner for efficient
production systems, engineering solutions and the associated
services in the food processing industry, in chemical
process engineering and in die casting.

Mr. Bertschwajtz needs help with flowability of reverts
I have to design a simple bin system for returning reverts from
a metallurgical plant. Reverts are crushed material from the
metallurgical aisle, that can be used brick, slag, etc., that
might contain useful material to win extract valuable material
during recycling into the furnace.
The max lump size is 75 mm, average is 10-25 mm.
Does anyone has experience with this type of material? I have
assumed a 60 degree hopper angle with 300 mm discharge opening.
Any reply will be much appreciated.
