Rulmeca Acquires Roller Manufacturer Melco

Wilmington, NC -- In December, Rulli Rulmeca SpA., headquarters of the Rulmeca Group of Companies, announced the acquisition of the leading South African roller manufacturer MELCO Conveyor Equipment, a well known brand in South Africa and on the international bulk handling market.

Melco, established by Mel and Roy Cohen in 1970, employs over 250 people all dedicated to the design, manufacture and sales of rollers, idlers and conveyor structure and equipment for belt conveyors. Melco was one of the first companies to introduce robotic welding of idler frames.

The Company has a leading position on the local market with additional exports to other African, Australian and American markets.

Rulmeca also acquired Melco’s interests in two Companies, the South African company Africa Roller (Pty) Ltd and the US Melco LLC USA in North Carolina.

This acquisition allows Rulmeca to enter new geographical markets (mainly Africa and Australia) and to integrate the Melco products such as the Supreme roller, a high density polyethylene roller suitable for corrosive and abrasive applications, into the Rulmeca Group companies.

Furthermore the Rulmeca existing products, such as the Motorized Pulleys, will become part of Melco range for the South African market.

Following this acquisition the Rulmeca Group, that closed 2006 with a consolidated turnover of 103 million Euro, now comprises 11 manufacturing plants and 4 sales companies, totaling 900 people worldwide.  In May 2007 the Group will commence local production of rollers in Tianjin, China.

On-Line Selector for Transfer Point Components

Neponset, IL -- Martin Engineering has brought the specification of conveyor transfer point components to the Internet with the introduction of an on-line Martin® Transfer Point System Selector on the company’s website.

Following entry of the characteristics of a belt conveyor and its cargo, the new System Selector will generate a recommendation for the proper components to improve the conveyor’s loading zone. Users can then link to other pages to view the features, benefits, and specifications for the Martin Products.

Martin Components included in the Transfer Point System Selector include: chute work, track-mounted idlers, dust curtains, tail sealing system, impact cradles, belt tracking devices and more.

To formulate a recommendation, users of the Martin Transfer Point System Selector enter basic information about their application. The information required is specific to each component. The System Selector then generates an itemized bill of materials, which can be used to order appropriate components.

The Martin Transfer Point System Selector includes a section where a user can evaluate the geometry of existing chutes to determine if replacement is necessary. The on-line system also includes tools to calculate the theoretical airflow, used to determine dust management requirements, and to retrieve the CEMA material code, to describe material abrasiveness, density, lump size, flowability, and other properties.

Founded in 1944, Martin Engineering is the world leader in making bulk materials handling cleaner, safer, and more productive. Martin Engineering technologies control dust and spillage from belt conveyors and promote the movement of bulk solids from storage and through industrial processes.

To try the Martin Transfer Point System Selector, visit the Products/Transfer Points or the Solutions sections of the Martin Engineering web site at http://www.martin-eng.com/

Poland’s Buys 17 Malvern Mastersizer 2000 Systems

Malvern, UK -- The National Network of Agrochemical Stations in Poland has purchased seventeen Malvern Mastersizer 2000 laser diffraction particle size analyzers for use in the rapid assessment of different soil types. The systems will be used throughout the country and will replace existing measurement methods, resulting in the simplification and acceleration of the analytical process.

The Mastersizer 2000 was selected primarily on the basis of: its speed of measurement and rapid delivery of results; the flexibility that allows the easy analysis of both wet and dry samples; instrument-to-instrument reproducibility; and the comprehensive local support provided by AP Instruments, Malvern’s representative in Poland.

This local support is also backed by comprehensive web-based education and training, and telephone helpdesk facilities. The worldwide use of the Mastersizer 2000 for a very large number of different applications also meant that many reference sites could be consulted during the decision-making process.

In Poland soil is classified in line with EU rules for agrochemical use. Nitrate retention levels, and therefore appropriate fertilizer usage rates, are related to soil characteristics. Using the Mastersizer 2000, soils can be classified into four distinct groups - gravel, sand, silt and clay - using just a simple 30-second measurement.

Both wet and dry samples can be analyzed easily by the simple and straightforward switching of sample dispersion units. The Mastersizer 2000 is fully automated and driven by standard operating procedures (SOPs) that allow the easy and reliable transfer of analytical procedures between instruments at different sites.

The Mastersizer 2000 is a laser diffraction-based particle size analyzer designed for routine use. Malvern Instruments has extensive expertise in the field of laser diffraction, developed over a period of more than 30 years. This expertise is used to offer exceptional technical support to customers, through a well-developed, highly effective worldwide network of suppliers. The Mastersizer 2000 offers flexibility, a broad measuring range (0.2 – 2000 µm) and excellent accuracy and reproducibility.

Mr. Hennings wants to know about sidewall forces in silos:

I was curious about the forces of stored whole corn against the side walls of a circular silo. In other words, if a silo is holding a million pounds of corn, how much of that weight is being supported by the cone and how much by friction with the side walls?'   (to post reply, click here)

Mr. Perpinan needs help with belt conveyor calculations:

I know what I want, but don't know how to get there.

The conveyor is:
-Dirt/earth 100lb./cuft. G.S.=1.6
-Speed= 0-400fpm (must throw 7')
-Length 22' long
-Width 5' wide belt
-19 degree incline
-35 degree trough idlers
-330 prw belt,pintle chain (maybe)

The conveyor will be dumping from truck in hopper to conveyor. I Need: drive roller dia.& number and motor(s) information.  (to post reply, click here)
