A. O. Smith Reaches Agreement to Sell Storage Tank Business
------------------------------------------------------------
MILWAUKEE, Dec. 18 /PRNewswire/ -- A. O. Smith Corporation
(NYSE: AOS) (Amex: SMC) today announced a definitive agreement
to sell its Engineered Storage Products Company to CST Industries,
Inc. of Kansas City, Kan. The companies expect to close the sale
early in January 2001.
With the completion of this sale, A. O. Smith concludes the
divestiture of its Storage and Fluid Handling Technology
platform. On December 11, the company announced the sale of its
fiberglass pipe business to two subsidiaries of Varco International
of Houston, Texas. The combined cash proceeds from these sales
total approximately $63 million. The company will recognize a
$14 million after-tax charge to discontinued operations related
to these transactions, as well as adjustments related to a prior
year's transaction.
A. O. Smith Engineered Storage Products Company, with headquarters
in DeKalb, Ill., manufactures shop-welded, bolted, and SealWeld
storage tanks for municipal, industrial, and agricultural applications
worldwide. The company has plants in Winchester, Tenn., and
Parsons, Kan., in addition to its facilities in DeKalb and employs
approximately 450 people.
"This transaction represents an important step in A. O. Smith's
ongoing strategy to concentrate on the electric motor and water
heater businesses," O'Toole observed. "The company is now well
positioned to achieve its financial objectives of generating
above-average sales and profit growth."
A. O. Smith Corporation is a diversified manufacturer with
headquarters in Milwaukee, Wis. Its major product lines include
fractional horsepower, hermetic, and integral horsepower electric
motors, residential and commercial water heating equipment, and
hydronic boilers. The company has plants in eight countries and
employs approximately 15,000 people.

New Hand-held Metal Detector Pinpoints Location of Tiny Particles
------------------------------------------------------------
ERIE, PA - Eriez introduces its new Metalarm Model HH-10
Hand-Held Metal Detector. Designed to locate the exact position
of small pieces of unwanted tramp metal, the detector can
activate audio and visual alarms whenever metal is detected.
The Hand-Held Metal Detector may be used anywhere an in-line
metal detector is installed. Once an in-line unit senses
contamination, the HH-10 can pinpoint the precise location
of the detected contaminant.
Eriez’ new HH-10 Hand-Held Metal Detector senses ferrous
contamination as small as one millimeter, and slightly larger
piece of non-ferrous metals. Its plug-in-and-go design ensures
consistent voltages and optimal sensitivities, unlike
battery-operated units, which lose sensitivity over time.
For more information regarding the Metalarm Model HH-10
Hand-Held Metal Detector, call toll-free at
(888) 800-ERIEZ (888-800-3743).
Or, visit the company online at http://www.eriez.com/
Eriez, recognized as "world authority in advanced technology
for magnetic, vibratory and metal detection applications,"
designs, develops, manufactures and markets advanced
technology equipment for magnetic separation, metal detection
and materials feeding, screening, conveying and controlling
applications.

Thermal Flour Treatment Process for Animal Feed Production
------------------------------------------------------------
Sanitation is becoming an increasingly important factor in
the feed manufacturing industry. For this reason, the global
Buhler Technology Group has launched its new discontinuous
three-stage Thermal Meal Treatment process. It is based on
proven know-how transferred from food processing applications
to the field of feed meal sanitizing.
The new Buhler process offers the same superior safety for
the germ-free production of animal feed as is already the
standard in the food processing industry. This is a marked
departure from other thermal meal treatment systems, which
up to now met lower standards.
Total engineering solution
The new, discontinuous line is a total concept based on a
carefully developed process engineering approach, and is
more than merely a machine-based solution. The process is
divided into three stages. First, the materials are mixed
and heated, then cooled or dried and cooled. This is followed
by the addition of the minor ingredients and the final
mixing stage. Operation of the self-contained system is
based on different programs: On the one hand, the production
requirements are taken into account, and on the other hand
sterilization of the equipment and automatic cleaning of
the entire process line are ensured at regular intervals.
Maximum protection from recontamination is also guaranteed
by microfilter or ozone purification systems.
Flexible modular system
The applied modular system allows the process line to be
readily integrated in existing processes of given throughputs
and equipment layouts. The automation system of the production
line has also been developed in-house and is manufactured
in Buhler's own factories, ensuring fast start-up and maximum
production reliability. Depending on the customer's needs
and the specific product requirements, Buhler continues
to offer the option between the well-known continuous and
the new discontinuous three-stage process.
New process on show at the Victam
Buhler will be presenting a full-scale three-stage Thermal
Meal Treatment line at the Victam 2001, Hall 7 / Stand 7C010,
in Utrecht, Netherlands. This is a unique opportunity that
no feed manufacturer should miss.
Buhler is the global partner for efficient production systems,
engineering solutions and the associated services in food
processing, chemical process engineering and die casting.

SJF Will Host Open Forum at ProMat
------------------------------------------------------------
WINSTED, Minn., Dec. 28/PRNewswire/ -- SJF Material Handling
will host an open discussion of material handling industry
matters during the ProMat show in Chicago. The event will
be held Feb 13th from 4:00 to 9:00 p.m. at the company's
hospitality suite at the Hyatt Regency.
According to SJF's Vice President of Marketing Stafford Sterner,
the idea is to provide an atmosphere where industry experts
and material handling equipment purchasers can express concerns
and exchange ideas freely. "Trade shows offer a limited,
sometimes censored version of the truth. Most people are
selling a particular product, and the full range of potential
solutions are not always on display. We want to let people
explore the way things really work, not just compare one brand
name with another."
SJF has sent out thousands of invitations to the event, and
is also promoting it in trade publications and on the company's
web site http://www.SJF.com . Those who RSVP to their invitation
will be sent a free copy of SJF's report "Buying Secrets
Industry Insiders Don't Want You To Know."
In business for over 20 years, SJF Material Handling Equipment
is a Winsted, Minnesota-based full service provider of new,
used and reconditioned material handling equipment. They
also provide complete design, layout, engineering, profiling,
set up, installation and testing for entire facilities.

Mr. Grenier needs a used Alpine or Hosokawa AFG200 unit:

Mr. Wilkes wants packaging for hygroscopic powders
We use two very hygroscopic powders in our manufacturing.
Currently they are packaged in a fiberboard drum that has
a double trash bag (1-2 mil PE) twist tied shut to hold the
powder.
We are experiencing lumping and poor flow as a result of
moisture pickup. I am looking into a screw top HDPE pail
(10.7 gal) which seems to help. I need a bag to use with
the powders that will block moisture as well.
Should I keep using the trash bags, or is there a good,
cheap moisture barrier bag that will fit and I can use
with consistent results? Please anyone let me know. I am
open to any 5 to 10 gallon system of a drum/bag type.
Thank You,
Mr. A. Wilkes

*****Just A Note From One Of Our 'Help Forum' Members*****
Salina Gate followup and thanks!
This forum is great. I have received many helpful replies.
To follow up since my last post, we have installed the
Salina gate w/o a manual valve and have loaded out around
50 trucks. So far we are quite pleased with the operation.
Our setup includes a Salina SS gate with air purge.
With a Bayshore spout directly below for truck loading.
The Bayshore spout has a babit probe that shuts off the
valve in case of overfilling.
