Poly Hi Solidur Becomes a Powder and
Bulk Dot Com Sponsor
We are pleased to announce that Poly
Hi Solidur has become a sponsor of Powder and Bulk Dot Com.
Poly
Hi Solidur is the manufacture of TIVAR 88, an industrial strength
polymer material used worldwide to line chutes, bins and
hoppers. It was specifically formulated for applications in
the bulk material handling field. TIVAR 88 has excellent
abrasion and corrosion resistance, as well as a very low coefficient
of friction that enhances flow properties.
Note the dump truck lined with TIVAR
vs. the unlined truck bed. You can see their banner ad on our

FPS Institute are to hold a short,
continuing education course on Filtration Separation and Washing in
Bexhill-on-Sea, East Sussex on 5-7 November, 2002.
The
course is designed to bring the participants up-to-date on the
principles and industrial practices of solid-liquid separation and
solids washing technology. While not exclusively concerned with
filtration and sedimentation, these operations will be dealt with in
depth. Important variations in the available equipment will be
discussed throughout the course with emphasis on basic engineering
concepts, equipment selection and evaluation, solids washing,
methods of pre-treatment, filter aids and other practical aspects of
mechanical separation.
The course is intended for engineers
and scientists of graduate status who are engaged in design,
production or research and development. Previous experience in
solid-liquid separation is helpful but not necessary. The emphasis
is on practical applications and practical problems. The course has
been given annually since 1974, first as a 4-day course called
Solid-Liquid Separation in Bradford and abroad and, more recently,
as a 3-day course under the present name, now in a new location. It
has gradually developed into an "equipment users' course"
with even more emphasis on practical application and with extra time
given to solids washing.
Butterworth's book on Solid-Liquid
Separation constitutes the core of the course manual and is
supplemented by three pieces of engineering software.

The World Batch Forum (WBF), the
leading organization dedicated to the advancement of batch process
manufacturing, will hold its annual North American conference April
7-10, 2002 in Woodcliff Lake, NJ.
The
four-day event, to be held at the Woodcliff Lake Hilton, will
include numerous workshops, presentations and roundtable discussions
on improving plant operations, the future of batch control and
emerging industry standards.
Mike Templeton, director of
manufacturing at Millennium Specialty Chemicals, will kick off the
conference with a keynote address on achieving 21st Century levels
of excellence in small plants with “manumatic” controls. Martin
Browning, who spent two decades as an expert investigator with the
Food and Drug Administration, will lead off Tuesday’s activities
with an address on the practical aspects of complying with the FDA’s
new 21 CFR Part 11 regulations. Harry Gianakis, the WBF’s
acting chairman, noted that the two keynote speeches are indicative
of the WBF’s renewed focus on meeting the needs of operational
personnel.
“During the past few years, there’s
been a great deal of attention in the media and at numerous
conferences to plant operations within the context of supply chain
management, enterprise resource planning, etc.” said Gianakis, a
senior research engineer with DuPont. “While those discussions are
essential, we also feel that it’s vital that personnel directly
involved in plant operations have a forum that addresses their
direct concerns – effective and safe operation of their
manufacturing facilities and conformance with state and federal
regulations. That’s our aim at this year’s WBF Conference, and
we feel it will offer plant personnel and managers an invaluable
learning opportunity.”
Gianakis also noted that the
conference always serves as an excellent forum for batch
manufacturing specialists to exchange ideas and discuss important
issues with their peers. “With standards such as S88 such as S95
becoming the common language of batch operations everywhere, peer
networking becomes more important and valuable than ever before,”
he said.
Gianakis also noted that the WBF’s
decision to hold the conference in Woodcliff Lake – less than an
hour’s drive from Newark Airport – makes it especially
accessible to attendees from the many batch manufacturing facilities
in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic regions.
Other highlights of the WBF’s 2002
conference include:
Case studies and presentations
intended to provide users with practical tips and techniques
that they can apply in their own facilities.
Tutorials on the ISA’s S88 and
S95 standards.
Vendor “Roast” in which users
can “grill” the control system providers on their current
products and their plans for future offerings.
User Roundtable highlighting cost
reductions and operational savings at their sites.
Social events, including a Sunday
night “welcome” reception and a Monday night offsite
networking event.
Those interested in attending the WBF’s
2002 conference can get additional details, including abstracts of
papers and registration information, at the organization’s website
( www.wbf.org ) or by calling the
WBF office at 480-893-8803
About World Batch Forum
World Batch Forum, established in
1994, is a non-profit, professional organization promoting the
exchange of information on the management, operation and automation
of batch process manufacturing. Members include end-users, vendors,
consultants and academics. In addition to hosting an annual
conference with formal presentation and technical papers, the WBF
provides organization, management, and structure to facilitate
networking among its members and sharing of knowledge and
information related to all aspects of batch processing. WBF
supplements the functions of ISA, AIChE, ISPE, CMA, and other
related professional organizations by integrating a variety of
management and technical disciplines needed to advance batch
processing knowledge and technology.

Hudson, WI - Niro is proud to
announce that the high-efficient NanoValve has surpassed all
expectations during the initial 3 years of operation. The valve was
patented and introduced to the market place by Niro Soavi in 1998
and has now proven its value in numerous food and dairy
installations.
Major
energy savings and product improvements have been achieved in
homogenization of whole milk and a variety of UHT milk applications.
Lately the NanoValve has accomplished significant results in a
number of beverage applications demonstrating the same advantages.
The NanoValve enables homogenization to take place at 20-30% lower
pressure compared to a standard homogenizing valve, while obtaining
the same homogenizing effect. This results in a direct energy saving
of 20-30% on a production scale homogenizer.
The NanoValve can be installed on all
existing Niro Soavi machines as well as on other brands of
homogenizers by mounting an adapter block. The NanoValve design
features:
Suitable for operating pressures
up to 3,600 psi
The large valve diameter enables
the valve to operate with a minute gap and thereby to obtain a
high homogenization effect at a low pressure.
Patented balanced valve system and
the pneumatically driven actuator ensures a stable operating
valve.
Available in aseptic and 3A
sanitary design.
Two-stage valve available.
Easy cleaning and maintenance with
few parts involved.
Low operating noise level.
Tungsten carbide wear parts
ensures long lifetime.
Passage head and impact head can
be re-machined for renewed operation and the impact head can be
turned for wear on both sides.
The popular Niro Soavi range of pumps
and homogenizers are based on Niro's know-how and expertise in
designing reliable high-pressure machines. Every machine is factory
tested at full design parameters before they are released under the
ISO9001 QA program.
