Arnott's Biscuits: Chocolate Masses on Buhler-Systems
------------------------------------------------------------
Higher Capacity with Same Quality
Arnotts Biscuits Ltd. is Australias largest biscuit (cookie)
manufacturer with a predominant market share and local biscuit
interests in New Zealand and Papua New Guinea. Now, Arnotts
Biscuits operates a fully automatic production system for
making high-quality chocolate masses.
Arnotts Biscuits Ltd. was founded in Newcastle, a city located
north of Sydney, in the year 1865 by a Scottish baker and
pastry cook, William Arnott. In 1964, Arnotts merged with
seven other family biscuit companies, becoming Australias
premium biscuit company.
Today, Arnotts employs thousands of people and supplies
biscuits to more than 40 countries around the globe.
Upgrading and extension
Buhler was awarded a contract to upgrade and extend the
chocolate mass production line at Arnotts plant in Marleston
(Adelaide). A number of specific targets were defined: Full
automation and application of state-of-the-art technologies
for ensuring economical production; improvement of the product
quality with respect to fat content, viscosity, yield and
consistency; and improvement of quality assurance in the
production plant.
In addition, the production capacity was to be increased.
In addition to the installation of essentially new machines
and devices, Buhler technologists also incorporated existing
SZAN and SFL refiners with modifications, two liquor tanks
plus sugar conveying equipment.
Arnotts provided locally sourced components such as pumps,
piping and valves for liquids and chocolate. From this
division of tasks resulted close and smooth cooperation
between Arnotts and Buhler engineers.
Great assistance
The Buhler scope of supply comprised systems for the intake
and conveying of powder components, including silos. Other
equipment supplied included a melting section for cocoa
butter and cocoa mass, a liquids dosing system to the mixer,
a liquids dosing system to the conches, two Frisse DÜC-6
conches (single machine version) and surge tanks, and a
fully automatic PC-based plant control system.
Installation supervision as well as start-up and customer
training were done by Buhler specialists with great
assistance from Arnotts personnel.
