World Batch Forum Announces New Working Group for Flow Analysis
------------------------------------------------------------

Chandler, Ariz. (January 13, 2001) - Flow Analysis Working
Group has been added to the list of World Batch Forum (WBF)
working groups.

The Flow Analysis Working Group is an outgrowth of a French
Batch Forum (http://www.frenchbatchforum.com/) working group
on the same topic. The Flow Analysis Working Group is lead by
Jean Vieille, Consultant, and Jean-Francois Cardot, Rhodia,
both of France. The working group will formalize a methodology
developed 12 years ago at RHONE POULENC. RHONE POULENC developed
a formal control design methodology that ensured the operational
safety of its hazardous chemical plants. That method was based
on an analytical check-up of material and energy flows to
define elementary equipment entities and process functionalities.
The benefits derived from that method were: inherent interlocks
at the actuator level that enforced operational safety, no
matter the operational mode, and prevention of cross-contamination.

"The aim of the Flow Analysis Working Group is to formally
define the RHONE POULENC method as an S88 complementary guideline
on a wider supporting basis through collecting the actual
knowledge and involving fresh ideas," explained Jean-Francois
Cardot, "Through a better understanding of these concepts,
communication will improve between process design, operation
and process control communities. It will also help vendors
develop supporting tools based on a consistent, mastered
documentation."

Jean Vieille added, "cGMP compliance of multipurpose process
cells within the S88 framework should become easier with the
Flow Analysis Methodology developed in this working group."

Working groups were established to provide members with an
opportunity to conduct collaborative work on topics of interest.
These groups provide a formalized method for people of similar
interests to work together, in a manner of their own choosing,
to further develop batch-related topics. The goal of a working
group is to publish and share their work with the batch
processing community. Work Group results are scheduled to
be presented at WBF conferences, through the WBF newsletter,
on the WBF web site and through related trade publications.

To begin, a, a team leader must be assigned. Within 60 days
the new working group must issue a plan of action to the WBF
Working Group Committee A World Batch Forum working group
may be created for any topic related to batch processing or
batch control industries. Working groups may be formed by
the request of 2 or more WBF members. For those interested
in joining a working group or learning more about them log
onto www.wbf.org or contact Working Group Chair, Dave
Emerson via e-mail at mailto:emerson@dallas.yca.com.

World Batch Forum is a non-commercial professional society
devoted to the understanding and application of emerging
batch processing technologies and automation standards
worldwide, including ISA, SP88, IEC 11631 and IEC SC65A.

Ross-Olsa Sanitary Vacuum Homogenizer Introduced
------------------------------------------------------------

Doug Cohen, Vice President -Technical Services of Ross today
announced the introduction of a new Model G2 Vacuum Mixer
Homogenizer.

This vacuum processor is primarily used for processing by
companies that require the ability to process under sanitary
conditions. The mixer is constructed entirely of stainless
steel and is completely polished for total cleaning between
batches. All surfaces of the mixer are designed to enable a
fast turn when needed. The standard agitator design of the
mixer includes a sweep blade anchor with wall scrapers and
an externally mounted high-shear Mixer Emulsifier. This
combination is ideal as the mixer has no seals or stuffing
boxes within the mixing chamber. Concerns over product
contamination are thus minimized.

The G2 Vacuum Mixer Homogenizer is built in many sizes
through 1000 gallon capacity. It can be customized to
include features that are unique to a customers own process.
The unit illustrated is available for evaluation in the
Ross Test and Development Center which is located at the
companies Hauppauge, Long Island headquarters.

Single-Pot Processor for Pharmaceutical Development
------------------------------------------------------------

Columbia, MD - As a result of its parent company GEA-AG's
acquisition of the Pharmaceutical Division of GEI International
plc, Niro Inc. now offers the Collette Ultima single pot
processor. The Ultima is especially designed for pharmaceutical
research and development.

The Ultima processing system utilizes a single container for
mixing, granulating, drying, coating, and pelletizing. It
provides high containment for enhanced operator safety,
especially when processing highly potent or toxic formulations.
Its compact size takes up minimal floor space, and the Ultima
25 is easily moveable, small enough to fit through a standard
door. Its CIP capability allows decreased cleaning times for
quicker changeover.

The Ultima is the first single-pot processor to combine a
swinging bowl and microwave drying in an efficient and safe
way. The use of microwaves during the drying process ensures
fast and even drying of granules. The swinging bowl increases
the available contact surface between the granulate and
jacket, resulting in faster drying.

Niro Inc. is an international company specializing in the
development, design, and engineering of liquid and powder
processing equipment for the manufacture of products in liquid,
powder, granulate, agglomerate, or tablet form. Niro products
include spray dryers and coolers, fluid bed systems, evaporators,
packaging equipment, homogenizers, membrane filtration systems,
and pharmaceutical processing systems.

SiloPatrol® Provides Reliable Solutions
------------------------------------------------------------

ELBURN, IL. - Unaffected by dust, vapors, vessel construction,
or acoustic noise, the SiloPatrol® inventory monitoring system
provides reliable continuous level measurement in a variety of
applications. In addition, the SiloPatrol system is economical
and virtually maintenance free, requiring no sensor adjustments.

The SiloPatrol® system utilizes a rugged sensor, flexible user
interface, Auxiliary Output Enclosures(AOE) and Remote Display
Units(RDU). The sensor features "smart" sensor technology and
provides dependable measurements in silos up to 150 feet in
height.

A flexible user interface is provided by either the Human
Machine Interface (HMI) or the newly introduced SiloTrack
inventory management software. SiloTrack is the first of its
kind to be able to initiate auxiliary analog and/or relay
outputs and allows the user to monitor up to 128 vessels
with a single PC.

Like SiloTrack, Auxiliary Output Enclosures (AOE) and the
Remote Display Unit (RDU) have recently been added to the
SiloPatrol® inventory monitoring system. Auxiliary outputs
can be provided with any SiloPatrol system using the standard
"smart" SMUs. Analog 4-20mA and relay contact outputs can
be used to transmit inventory measurements to remote locations,
sound alarms, and provide for local control functions. The
Remote Display allows the latest measurement to be viewed
at multiple convenient points within the system.

Mr. Gardezi is looking for help with powder extrusion:

I need to extrude fine powdered Epoxy & Polyester which is
very thin (size 100 micron & below).

Now when I extrude this material through a Single Screw
Extruder, at the start the output is very low & with the
passage of time the output reduces further till a time
comes when the material stops moving & the material gets
clotted in the heated section.

Kindly guide if some one has any good advice.

This week's photo is of a Multi-Port, Wye-Line Diverter
designed, fabricated and recently delivered to customer which
handles nylon resin by Salina Vortex. It is capable of
transporting pneumatically-conveyed material from five sources
to five destinations simultaneously. The diverter incorporates
valve sensor manifold technology and was pre-assembled, piped,
wired and plumbed on a specially constructed steel frame.
The finished valve assembly was 26 '8" long, 8' 6" wide, 8' 6"
tall and weighed 13,000 pounds.
