AIChE
Honors Andrew Jenike
Salt
Lake City, UT -- The 2007 Annual Meeting of the American
Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE) was recently held in
Salt Lake City, Utah. This meeting coincided with the 100th
anniversary of the founding of the University of Utah. It
also roughly corresponded to the 50 th anniversary of the
start of Dr. Andrew Jenike’s pioneering work at that
university in understanding the gravity flow of bulk solids.
AIChE’s Particle Technology Forum
sponsored two sessions at this meeting commemorating this
event. One was a Jenike memorial session, and the other a
panel discussion concerning Jenike’s legacy.
In recognition of this occasion,
the British Materials Handling Board created a special
award. Because of his outstanding contribution that
transformed the storage and handling of bulk solids from an
empirical industry to a science, the BMHB decided to honor
Andrew Jenike as the leading Bulk Technology Pioneer of the
20th Century.
Lyn Bates, Director of BMHB,
noted, “The contributions of Andrew Jenike to fill the void
in our understanding of the rheology of particulate solids
in gravity flow were thorough and comprehensive. His
pioneering work, published in Bulleting 123 of the Utah
Experimental Station in 1964, remains the most quoted
reference of all papers that are published in the field of
bulk technology.
The result of Jenike’s
outstanding work was to change the design of bulk storage
hoppers, silos, and other storage and processing vessels
from an empirical technique to a formal engineering
procedure with a predictable outcome.”
Dr. John Carson, president of
Jenike & Johanson, stated, “We are very proud of the
accomplishments of our founder, Andrew Jenike. He set the
guiding principles for our firm that have allowed us to grow
and prosper for over 40 years so that we can continually
improve our ability to serve our clients.”

Metso Minerals to Supply Cone
Crushers
Helsinki,
Finland -- Metso Minerals will supply three cone crushers to
BHP Billiton Iron Ore for its Newman Hub project in Western
Australia. The delivery is scheduled for September 2008. The
value of the order is approximately EUR 5 million.
The
order includes three Nordberg MP800 cone crushers that are
supplied with drive motors, bases and air-cooler chillers
units. The chiller units are required due to the high
temperatures experienced at the site. Installed power per
machine is 600kW. The order also includes commissioning
assistance and spare parts.
The
Newman Hub project is a new plant being built at an existing
site. Primary crushed ore will be crushed by the three cone
crushers in a closed circuit to produce annually 32 million
tonnes of iron ore lump (32mm x 6mm) and fines (6mm x 0mm).
BHP
Billiton Limited is the world's largest diversified
resources company.
Metso

Conforma Clad New Coating
Protects Screens
New
Albany, IN -- Conforma Clad, a global leader of severe wear
solutions, introduces its infiltration brazed tungsten
carbide coating to screens.

Conforma Clad screens last up to eight times longer in field
tests than standard stainless steel screens. Additionally,
the use of Conforma Clad cladding allows for the
substitution of less expensive carbon screens in place of
stainless steel. Conforma Clad screen capabilities include
screens up to 4 feet by 12 feet, with screen openings ¼ inch
and larger.
Common screen types include: woven mesh, wedge wire and
grates, expanded diamond and perforated screens.
Proven Results: One coal fired power plant installed
stainless screens to protect their SCR equipment from
popcorn fly ash. In less than 6 months, the screens were
torn apart and had to be replaced. The plant decided to
install Conforma Clad screens, and after nine months, the
screens showed little wear.
Conforma Clad is a leading provider of severe wear solutions
for industrial components exposed to extreme abrasion,
corrosion and erosion. The proprietary Conforma Clad process
brazes tungsten carbide to the base material of steel parts,
producing a hard, uniform protective cladding that is
extremely durable.

NBE's New Automated Bulk Bag Filler
Holland,
MI -- NBE's cantilevered Bulk Bag Filler features a dual
concentric tube fill head design that includes quick
release knobs for easy cleaning of the product feed
tube. The outer tube includes a replaceable black EPDM
inflatable bladder seal to ensure dust free operation
and is automatically deflated when the fill cycle has
completed.
The rear bag support hooks
traverse forward to the front of the machine for ease of
operator interface while hanging bags to be filled. The
uprights feature 304 solid stainless steel track-bars
which eliminate mechanical play when hydraulically
raising and lowering the cantilevered fill head. The
touch screen operator interface allows the operator to
select from a menu of bag sizes and material
specifications that optimizes the throughput of the bag
filling process.

Mr. Livni wants help with open
pit storage solutions:
We would like to have your
technical input and advice for the following problem:
Limestone crushed aggregates
(from jaw crasher ) 0-200mm, capacity 1330 t/h are coming
from a quarry and building an open pile of 6,500 ton. The
pile is sitting on a bunker with 1/1m opening in its center.
We are looking for a solution
to avoid using portable tractors for the dead load material.
it is possible to build concrete walls in order to limit the
edges of the pile if a solution required it.
The preferred solution is
concentrating the dead load material into one or two
conveyors at the bottom of the pile directed to the central
opening.

Mr. Crespo wants to dry bread
for animal food:
I am designing an
installation (4 t/h) to recover bread (tin bread) in order
to make a powder for animal food. I want to reduce its
size to 3-30mm, dry it and then send it to a mill to get a
final powder.
I am doubting about using a
trommel dryer or a flash (pneumatic) dryer. Both
purchasing prices and energy costs are important, since we
are both the designers and the end users.
