Hershey's realizes big savings with an Automated Warehousing
------------------------------------------------------------

If quality and costs count - Hershey's Ice Cream realizes big
savings with an Automated Warehousing System.

York, Pennsylvania - June, 2000 - A High Density Storage System
by Westfalia Technologies optimizes material flow and reduces
the cost of logistics at Hershey's New Ice Cream Distribution
Center. The automated warehousing system reduces labor
requirements in the extreme environment of temperatures below
-25 degrees Fahrenheit.

Hershey Ice Cream's business strategy required a distribution
system capable of handling both smaller direct store deliveries
and larger orders for their many regional warehouses. Due to
the large number of Stock Keeping Units (SKU's), a distribution
center was needed to handle the necessary product volume
while maintaining instant selectivity for their many SKU's.

The system most likely to meet the distribution objectives of
Hershey's Ice Cream was a High Density AS/RS from Westfalia
Technologies, Inc., York, PA, with integrated order selection.
After an extensive product and function analysis five thousand
(5.000) pallet rack positions were constructed using a building
of the rack supported variety. This means that the wall and
roof systems were attached directly to the rack frames. Eight
storage levels were constructed making the building approximately
70 feet tall. Building cost reductions in foundation, slab, and
structural steel were realized through this approach.

The system has a combination of 7 and 5 deep storage lanes
serviced by two aisles. These aisles contain one Storage/Retrieval
Machine (S/RM), each capable of handling approximately 70 pallets
per hour.

The chosen configuration provides optimized operational
efficiencies and space utilization. All integrated elements
meet the technical requirements for cold temperature environments
assuring reliability and longevity.

Critical to the success and reliability of the system is that
all pallets are triple supported within the rack structure. The
quality of pallets are not always good, and have experienced
severe cracking and failure in Hershey's previous drive-in style
racking system. Pallets are stored with the 48" side facing
the aisle. By triple supporting all pallets, deflection and
overload conditions are significantly reduced if not eliminated,
thus protecting the structural integrity of the pallet and
eliminating the chance of failure.

Hershey's Ice Cream has built an efficient Distribution Center
capable of handling present and future requirements.
Refrigeration costs are down due to the space saving
characteristics of a multiple deep racking system. Construction
costs including land acquisition were lowered by building
an eight level system (70 feet high). Pick productivity has
more than doubled through the use of automatic replenishment
and paperless picking systems. High throughput capabilities
allow the company to deliver their product faster and more
efficiently.

Westfalia Technologies designed and built the Hershey
distribution center and has supplied automated warehousing
solutions to all areas of the food industry for over 20 years.

engineers involved in engineering designs, project personnel
and hazards analysis teams, and also help to brush up those
who have recently stepped in the field of Safety Management
and Audits.

The main topics to be covered shall include;

-Role of Plant and Equipment Design (Material Selection,
Heat Transfer, Thermal Insulation),
-Process Control Systems,
-Electrical Hazards, Explosion Protections,
-Flame Arrestors, Fire protection

Rugby Cement Chooses Portasilo For Pneumatic Conveying Systems
------------------------------------------------------------

Portasilo has been awarded a £400,000+ contract by Rugby Cement.
This is to design, manufacture and install three PORTASILO
SUPERFLO dense phase pneumatic conveying systems and a 290
tonne site built Cement Kiln Dust (CKD) storage silo, for tanker
loading, at South Ferriby, North Linconlnshire.

The complete scheme was jointly developed by Rugby Cement to
utilize the CKD, which is produced as a by-product in the
cement process. Portasilo has worked on several schemes at
this site and, as part of the ongoing relationship, Portasilo
carried out extensive trials on the dense phase conveying of
the CKD at its materials research facility in York during
the development stage of this scheme.

Two of the conveying systems are designed to collect CKD from
the outlet of the dust precipitators at a temperature of 85°C.
The dust is then conveyed over a distance of approximately 125
meters to the storage silo at a conveying rate of 500 Kg/Hr.
The third conveying system collects CKD from the main cyclone
at a temperature of up to 250°C. The dust is then conveyed over
a distance of 75 meters to the storage silo at a conveying
rate of 5000 Kg/Hr.

The storage silo allows for tanker filling through the use of
a conventional tanker loading hood or a bulker via a conditioner,
which introduces water to ensure a homogeneous mix in the bulker.

Portasilo has over 45 years experience in all aspects of
the bulk handling and storage of particulate materials.

New 100 Gallon Change Can Sanitary Reactor Introduced
------------------------------------------------------------

The Ross line of sanitary process equipment continues to
expand with the introduction of a new 100 gallon Reaction
Vessel.

This new model is perfect for the production of specialty
products or for the development of new products in a pilot
plant setting. The new Reactor is constructed entirely of
type 316 stainless steel and all surfaces are polished.
This model is designed for operation under vacuum and
pressure. The mixing vessel is mounted on wheels to permit
easy cleaning and movement to a discharge point after the
mix cycle is complete. Numerous charge and sight ports
are provided in the cover.

The agitator combination is unique as it is a special
"Wisk" design and is driven by a variable frequency drive
to provide for variable speed operation. This allows a
user to mix a wide range of products and to mix small
volumes in the same mixer. The hydraulic lifting design
permits the rotation of the mixing head a full 90 degrees
from the mix position.

Both agitators are independently varied so that the speed
can be adjusted to the desired shear rate for the material
being produced. The mixer is designed for CIP and SIP if
needed, and is complete with charging and sight ports to
ensure its easy operation in the pilot plant setting. A
self contained operator control panel is built into the
frame of the mixer.

Hot Messages from the Help Forum

People post their requests for help and offer their suggestions
to others in our open forum.

Mr. Ashby needs a sampler:

We have a sticky powder coming down a 12" chute into a drum.

The current method of sampling is to scoop some powder out of
the drum into a tub manually. We then analyse using a heater/weigher
to determine moisture content. The health aspects could be
improved with a more advanced sampling system we believe. The
dust is unpleasant to breath in.

Any sampling system which sticks into the chute should not
stick in too far or the powder is likely to bridge and cause
a blockage. The sample will need to be positively displaced
out of the sampler or some is likely to be left behind to
contaminate the following sample.

Size of sample required: 10g or more. We would also consider
a sampler which could take samples out of the drum at arms
length or a sampler which went into our hopper (so you couldn't
rely on gravity to fill the sample chamber).
