Southeast Powders Show to Co-Locate with SouthPack

(Editor's Note: I received this as an email from Mike Morrissey of Canon Communications. Co-locating the SE Powders Show with SouthPack will make this small regional, off-year show, bigger than the Powders Show in Chicago, at least in attendance! Plus the show is now in April, not May.)

Norwalk, CT -- As you may have heard, the Powder & Bulk Solids events have been purchased by Canon Communications LLC, based in Los Angeles. As of June 15th, 2006, the transaction was completed and some positive changes have been announced.

The 2007 Southeast Powder & Bulk Solids Show will be moved from the Cobb Gallery to the Georgia World Congress Center in downtown Atlanta. The new show dates will be April 24-26.

The show will also be co-located with the SouthPack event which draws over 20,000 attendees. Over 800 Exhibitors & 300,000 square feet of exhibition space! Over 20,000 attendees expected over 3 days.

Editors note: Here is the link to the SouthPack event for more details: http://www.southpackshow.com/

Delmar Schmidt Wins Our First Blogging Contest

Jacksonville Beach, FL -- Delmar Schmidt, an Applications and Field Engineer at Melfi Technologies, is the winner of our first blog author's contest. Rather than take the iPod, Delmar chose to go for the $200 gift certificate from Amazon. I asked him what he planned to do with his gift certificate:

"I plan to be totally frivolous," he replied, "and upgrade to a new PDA Bluetooth enabled cell phone and earpiece. This is something I have wanted for a while but would not ordinarily send my own hard-earned dollars for. Thank you Powder and Bulk Dot Com for the contest!"

Delmar said this was his first blog article, though he has been an active online contributor the Powder and Bulk help forum.

"I currently do not read or subscribe to other blogs," he wrote in an email, "because frankly I do not see the functional advantage of the blog format. Powder and Bulk and the other forums I frequent do a great job of attracting colleagues with similar interests and experiences to share, and effectively assemble the postings into a usable format. Because of this I have not had the need to further investigate bogging. With time I'm sure I will figure it out and see the advantage."

Thanks again to our fellow blogger, Joe Lewis, and Monitor Technologies for sponsoring the contest. For all those who signed up for authoring accounts but didn't get around to posting an article, you still have an opportunity to win in our next contest. Watch for an announcement coming soon.

Thiele Technologies to Acquire Slidell, Inc. Assets

MINNEAPOLIS, MN -- In April of this year, Robert H. Chapman, chairman and CEO of Barry-Wehmiller Companies, Inc., and Larry Smith, president and CEO of Thiele Technologies, has announced an agreement to acquire the intellectual property and certain specified assets of Slidell, Inc. of Owatonna, Minn.

Thiele Technologies, a division of Barry-Wehmiller Companies, evolved as an operating group in 1998 through the acquisition of Bemis Packaging Machinery Company and the subsequent integration with Thiele Engineering, Master Palletizer and Frontier Packaging. With the 2005 acquisition of Edmeyer dairy systems, Thiele has become a well-balanced supplier of packaging machinery, providing a full complement of equipment for high-speed bag filling and palletizing, case packaging and palletizing, cartoning, bundling, and placing solutions for the packaging industry.

Founded in the mid-1970s by Harold MacGregor, Slidell, Inc. designs and manufactures automatic packaging equipment for handling free-flowing granular and powder materials into open mouth bags and palletizing systems. Its focus has been on a variety of chemical, feed, seed and other bulk material handling markets. Slidell is a full-service provider offering system layouts, equipment design, manufacturing, installation, service and repair parts to major companies throughout North America.

Commenting on the planned transaction, Smith said, “The acquisition of the intellectual assets of Slidell, combined with Thiele’s extensive capabilities and experience in bag filling and palletizing applications, will provide current Slidell customers with access to a high level of support for existing lines and a variety of other packaging machinery solutions. This single supplier, system-provider philosophy will provide added value to Slidell users.”

About Thiele Technologies

Thiele Technologies, Inc. provides advanced high-speed packaging automation solutions to a variety of industries around the globe, including petro chemicals, fresh and frozen food, pet food, beverage, dairy, bakery, pharmaceutical, medical devices, cosmetics, horticultural, paper goods, consumer mailing and collating, and paint filling. Mr. Mohr needs help calculating heat loss in conveying line:

I am designing a positive pressure, dilute phase, convey system for fly ash and am interested in learning about the effects of temperature loss of the conveyed mixture (solids + air).

The starting temperature of the mixture based on mass flows is 700 degrees F. I am curious how to determine the temperature of the mixture after 300 feet of pipe length in outdoor installation with no insulation.

I have used an iterative process to determine a delta T based on energy in, (mCp(T1 - T2)) equal to energy out, (convective + radiation) but am not sure if I am on the right track.  (to post reply, click here)

Mr. Chen needs help finding a bagging machine:

Hi members, I am designing a dry concrete production plant and have difficulty in finding a dry concrete packing machine. The coarse aggregate size is 5 - 18 mm and fine aggregate size is 3 - 6 mm.

What kind of packing machine can be used in the application. If the sack is valve or open-mouthed, is there any difference in packing machine?
