Chill Out! : Ingredient Chilling Helps Bakers Cope With Heat

Click hereMurray Hill, New Jersey, U.S. July 15, 2003 — BOC says its ingredient chilling technology is the cool solution to rising temperatures. Summer heat means increased problems for bakers, who have to cope with flour that can reach 90° - 100° Fahrenheit (F) even before processing.

Overheated flour causes problems with the quality and consistency of the dough, which increases waste and decreases yield. Traditionally, bakers have fought back by using ice to cool the flour, but that method raises concerns about excess moisture, recipe reformulations, and increased labor costs.

"Cryogenic chilling is a better solution," says Amy Ficon, sales support manager, food market sector, BOC. "Our integrated bulk ingredient chilling system improves bakery product consistency by maintaining uniform and accurate ingredient temperatures even in extreme heat. The system eliminates fluctuations in ingredient temperatures, resulting in less waste, greater batch-to batch consistency, reduced operating costs, and increased efficiency."

"Some of our customers are reporting as much as a one-percent yield gain and up to 58-percent reduced waste in their products," says Ficon, "Bakers love the fact that the technology produces consistent flour dough temperatures (+/- 1/2° F) even during the hottest summer months."

According to Ficon, the system's fully automated cryogenic process also reduces, and often eliminates, the need for ice in dough formation. "The programmable, self-regulating ingredient chilling system can be used year-round to ensure product consistency, but it is particularly valuable in the summer when flour is subjected to higher temperatures both during transport and while being stored in silos," she adds.

Ficon says that the chilling technology can be easily installed on existing conveying lines or as part of a new system. "BOC fully integrates the chilling and conveying control systems," she says. "Our systems are fully automatic, so there is little or no maintenance required. And they will shut down automatically if the control senses either high or low operating pressure or low temperature."

BOC is a leading global supplier of industrial gases and state-of-the-art food safety and cryogenic freezing and chilling technologies. BOC provides a single source for cryogenic and non-cryogenic gases, along with a variety of technologies for growth and harvest, packaging, preparation and preservation, storage, transport, water recycling and disinfection, water treatment and distribution.

You Can Never Be Too Thin : New Low-Profile, Sanitary Butterfly Valve

Click hereMiddlesex, NJ -- Gemco a leading manufacturer of equipment for solids processing industries has manufactured its line of Spherical Disc Valves since the 1930's. While this valve has built a reputation for its full port opening, self-cleaning seat and long life it does require a high profile related to its diameter. For space restricted applications Gemco Valve now offers a low-profile Butterfly Valve. Measuring only 1-1/2 inches in thickness the SB valve can fit in the tightest spaces.

The SB Valve is compliant with the USDA 3A requirements for manual cleaned butterfly valves in dry powder applications. The SB valve dismantles by hand in minutes for quick inspection and cleaning. Available in sized from 4" through 16" the valve is offered in #4 satin or #7 mirror polish with manual or air operators. It is manufactured in the United States from 316L Stainless Steel and FDA compliant Silicone seals. Standard and engineered options such as weld necks and Tri-clamps“ are also available.

Three models of the Butterfly Valve are available:

SB-1 Welded in position. (One-clamp) The SB-1 valve is designed so the top half can be welded in position. The body clamp secures the bottom half. It can be removed in seconds for inspection and cleaning.

SB-2 Clamped in position. (Two-clamp) The SB-2 design allows the top half to be clamped in position. Similar to SB-1, the body clamps allows the valve to be dismantled by hand in seconds.

SB-3 Clamped in position with accessory clamp. (Three-clamp) The SB-3 is clamped in position and comes with a third clamp on the outlet for the attachment of accessories such as sleeves.

Gemco's ISO quality certification and process experience enables it to provide products, which meet the strictest requirements of the pharmaceutical, food, nutraceutical and related powder industries. Gemco Valve engineers and manufactures high performance valves, airlocks, retractable sleeves, carts, lifts, drum fillers, drum lifters and related loading and unloading equipment in their facility at

Sealed For Life : Conveyor Cleaner For Sensitive Environments

Click hereBraeside, Australia -- Kinder & Co has released a new version of its K-Brush conveyor belt cleaner - Type LM. K-Brush -- sealed for life.

The new cleaner has a 'sealed for life' and maintenance-free shaft mounted gear reducer, thus enabling its use in sensitive environments handling food and plants, in laboratories, as well as mainstream bulk handling installations. Designed to be installed alongside both rubber and PVC belt cleaning applications, it has shown to perform well in applications where belts are cleated, chevron or reversible and/or joined with mechanical fasteners.

K-Brush LM Type is also supplied with a choice of brush configurations which are selected for the specific applications. A potentially explosive application would require an anti-static brush fill. K-Brush Type LM is a standardized unit that sweeps the belt clean using a rotary action.

Wet, dry, sticky, hydroscopically charged and abrasive products are effectively handled. The unit is essentially a system of non-corroding polyethylene brushes giving the product a long lifespan and the ability to work safely in food grade environments. Bristles are an abrasive resistant polypropylene, with a wide variety of bristles being available. A rotary powered brush cleans all types of surfaces.

Typical belt widths range up to 750mm, with applications up to 2400mm being handled by heavy duty units. Details of these are available on request.

Mr. Byrd needs help loading a reactor:

I am trying to redesign a dense phase lime transfer system that discharges directly to a liquid filled reactor.  The lime is injected below the liquid but it still finds its way into the vent and plugs everything up.  I would like to see if there is a better way of doing this.  (Click here to post a reply)

Mr. van der Merwe help with wear in dense phase conveyor:

What is the best pipe material that should be used for a dense phase pneumatic transfer system which transfers titanium chlorate and sulphates.

I have been working on a system that has extremely high wear rates on the bends and even on the straight runs. I have used heavy schedule mild steel, HDP, ceramic lining and still have high wear.

Please could someone let me know if they experience the same problem and have overcome it.  (Click here to post a reply)
