New Industrial Blog : The Process Engineers Tree House

Jacksonville Beach, FL -- The idea to do a weblog for process engineers started with an interview at IAOCblog.com, hosted by the International Association of Online Communicators. It was in a Q&A with Joe Taylor, founder of Powder and Bulk Dot Com, during IAOC's first week of blogging devoted to discussions about industrial companies.

We talked about how his two industrial websites PowderandBulk.com and WaterandWastewater.com have helped form a sense of community among his regular visitors, and I asked him if any of his regulars had sought to further the community spirit. He replied:

"Some of the regulars have suggested that we should build a tree house or start a club. There is a feeling among process engineers dealing with bulk solids that they don't have a way to congregate with their peers. There is no professional society focused on their field. Who knows, maybe a weblog could help serve that end."

So here's the tree. It's pretty bare right now, but you've got the tools to start building this community any way you want. Whether you are a designer of conveying systems, a user of process equipment, or a maker of bulk materials handling equipment, here is a place where you can tell us about what you do, how you do it and how it might be done better...

Moving Up : Goodyear Announces New Conveyor Belt Lineup

LAS VEGAS, NV -- To better serve the aggregate, hard rock and sand-and-gravel industries, Goodyear Engineered Products has introduced a new aboveground conveyor belt lineup, featuring four products matched to specific performance needs and applications.

Each belt is designed for specific conveying conditions along a material's journey from the earth to its final destination, according to Mike Braucher, marketing manager for Goodyear conveyor belt products. “Our 'Smarter from the Ground Up' conveyor systems are designed to provide superior product performance and low cost-per-ton operations,” he said.

Goodyear Conquest, introduced two years ago with a patented Triple-Warp fabric reinforced weave, withstands extremely abusive conditions found in heavy-duty, high impact applications, such as a primary crusher.

Goodyear Plylon Plus, introduced in 1995, is built with excellent rip, tear and impact resistance for use in mainline, transfer and overland applications to move material from crusher to stacker locations.

Goodyear Plylon, new to the belt lineup, is designed for secondary crusher and wash plant applications, and was created using a market-back approach that identifies specific customer needs.

"We surveyed more than 140 independent end-users to determine what was important to the industry,” said Braucher. With customer input, Goodyear developed a belt that fits their performance needs and expectations for a variety of applications. Secondary crusher and wash plant applications require a belt with low elongation, cover wear longevity, excellent fastener hold, and rip-and-tear resistance. "Plyon provides it all," said Braucher.

Completing the lineup is Goodyear Spartan, which was added in 2001. Designed for low abuse environments, Spartan is an economic alternative for light-duty applications, such as load-out and stacker conveyor operations.

Plylon Plus and Plylon are supplied with Goodyear’s new Guardian cover compound, which provides high-abrasion, ozone, and cut-and-gouge resistance. However, both belts can be customized with other Goodyear cover compounds and gauges to meet specific end-user requirements.

Braucher said the new comprehensive lineup is designed to minimize a mine superintendent’s biggest concern - downtime. “Our goal is to improve a system’s reliability and keep it running to improve the operation’s productivity and profitability,” he said.

Mr. Dietzold needs help with choosing a chute design:

Could anybody help me to choose and design the best chute cross section and dimensions, for a given material, grain size, bulk density, moisture content, desired throughput, chute slope and geometry, square, round, etc.?

Would the criteria be different for a vertical chute, i.e., for free falling material?  Thanks in advance for any help.  (to post reply, click here)

Mr. Vincent wants to mill nano-particles:

I am currently investigating a nano-particle production method and am interested in the claim that: "dry milling to produce nano-particles within a salt matrix, virtually eliminates agglomeration." Is this something special that other producers/methods are not able to achieve?

Thanks for any help that is rendered.  (to post reply, click here)
