Your Top Picks From The Reading Room
------------------------------------------------------------

We receive weekly traffic reports from Amazon.com for the
Reading Room. The one striking thing is that our visitors love
technical books over popular literature. (Who would have guessed
that!) Those looking for new technology information outnumber
people who browsed the New York Times Best Sellers list 20 to 1.

Your top three books from the Reading Room are:

"Materials Handling Handbook (McGraw-Hill)"
by David E. Mulcahy (Editor)
Hard Cover, 768 pages, September 1998

"Powder Technology Handbook"
by K. Gotoh, H. Masuda and K. Higashitani (Editors)
Hard Cover, 2nd Edition

"Batch Control: Practical Guides for Measurement and Control"
by Eli Nisenfeld, A.E. Nisenfeld, H. Leegwater (Editors)
Hardcover, May 1996

We thank you for your continued support of the Reading Room.
Do you need a book? Can you suggest a book you love, that we
should have in the Reading Room? Let me know and we will
try to include it!

Columbia-Okura Offers Hybrid Robotic Palletizing
------------------------------------------------------------

Columbia-Okura announces hybrid palletizing. This innovation
achieves the high speeds of traditional palletizing, while
utilizing less space.

Hybrid palletizing uses a combination of traditional and robotic
techniques to gain the unique benefits offered by both. The
system uses conventional pallet dispensers and row formers,
when combined with robotic palletizing, allows for high-speed
product handling in existing production areas.

sugar(grain) from level 0 to level 7 meters and run about
20 meters.

We need to know what is the best system."

Mr. Rallison of International Specialty Products:

"I am looking for manufacturers of drum (30 & 55 gallon) dump
stations. The product in the drum is a very fine, dry, powder.
The drum needs to be loaded into a metal tote. I need to
transfer the product with no dusting. I can vent the tote."

Peter Wentworth in Illinois is looking for a screw conveyor:

"Would anyone happen to know where I could locate rather small
vertical screw conveyers? (roughly 1 cm. dia. by 25 cm. height).

Many Thanks,

Joe Finn is looking to handle aluminum-foil trims:

"I am looking for ideas on transferring chopped foil from the
bottom discharge of a cyclone to an adjacent briquetter - there
is a height limitation, so we are considering use of a mechanical
conveyor. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Is there a suggested ratio for CFM to pounds of material conveyed
to use in sizing trim removal ductwork?

I would like to receive information on trim system equipment such
as choppers, trim MH fans, balers, briquetters, air separators.
Please advise your web site address and I will examine and reply."

Thanks for your help,
Joe Finn

Call For Photographs!
------------------------------------------------------------

We would like to thank Mr. Richard Hollman of United Conveyor
Corporation for supplying the photograph currently appears on
our home page. The photo is of two submerged flight conveyors
serving to remove "clinker" or bottom ash material from electric
generation boilers in China. The two conveyors lift the clinkers
up and into a roll crusher. The crushed "clinkers" are then
conveyed to dewatering bin.

We would love to have your photo of a bulk materials process,
packaging, conveying or handling situation for our home page.
If you have a favorite action shot of bulk materials handling
at its best, please email us a jpeg or gif of the photo with
a description of what is in the photo for our home page.

Full credit and the description of the photo will be given in
the image tag under the photo! An image tag is the message
that pops up when one passes their mouse pointer over the
image on the web page.

Photographs will be changed every two weeks to give everyone
a chance to be included. Also, there is talk that we may
archive photographs with full-text description, photo
credit and a hot link to the photograph's owners home page.

Send your photograph and description to,
mailto:news@powderandbulk.com

Search Engines Index Less Web Pages !
------------------------------------------------------------

Studies show that the extent to which search engines can index
the web is dropping. A 1998 study by NEC Research Institute
found that 33% of the Web was indexed by search engines but
the 1999 numbers have dropped to one sixth of the Web!

So who has the most indexed web pages available for searching?

Search Engine: Percentage of All
Web Pages Indexed:

Northern Light 15.5 %
Snap 15.5 %
AltaVista 15.5 %
HotBot 11.3 %
Microsoft 8.0 %
Infoseek 8.0 %
Google 7.8 %
Yahoo! 7.4 %
Excite 5.6 %
Lycos 2.5 %
Euroseek 2.2 %

How long does it take for a site to be indexed?

The study found on average it takes 4-6 months to be indexed
by a search engine. It was suggested that the cost of
maintaining larger databases is why search engines have
relatively low indexing figures.

As a footnote for you junior webmasters (me included!) out
there, you can check how many pages of your web site, or
for that matter anyone else's, are indexed on Altavista's
and Infoseek's search engine. Try typing this into the
search window, rather than putting in a keyword.

Type in: url:www.yourwebaddress.com
or url:yourwebaddress.com

The result will the number of your web pages that are indexed
on that search engine. You might be surprised by the results.

Also, you can check to see how many other pages are linked
to your home page Just change the "url:" to "link:"

Type in: link:www.yourwebaddress.com
or link:yourwebaddress.com

The results from this search will be a list of the web pages
that refer to that exact page, in this case your home page
The more popular the web site, the more links go to it.

We checked www.powderandbulk.com on Altavista and Infoseek
with the following results:

Altavista
Powder and Bulk Dot Com has 346 pages indexed by Altavista
and 613 pages have hyper-links to our site!

Infoseek
Powder and Bulk Dot Com 191 pages indexed by Infoseek
and 423 pages have hyper-links to our site!

Have fun!
